A very tiny mistake: the white shirt was from Yohji Yamamoto, not the skirt. If you look closely, the shirt was buttonless. It was designed to be worn as Carolyn did, and that was why it fit so perfectly.

It's fascinating to see CBK through the eyes of someone that did not experience the 90s as I did. There isn't a current "celebrity" that can even come close to her elegance. CBK's style and fresh beauty is timeless. I was in my early 20s when her sister, CBK and John passed away. Some times I wonder how she would feel about the vulgar beauty standards that have become "norm."

Lovely profile of Carolyn. I am much older - will be 80 this year, and I remember her very well. The person who really started the white shirt for evening was Carolina Herrera. That was her signature look and still is. Carolyn was a lovely person, and her untimely death is still so sad, along with JFK, Jr. and Carolyn's sister. They were a fascinating couple on many levels.

She was a New England physician's daughter, so had upper middle class money all her life: successful doctor/lawyer money. The Birkin bag became a style icon all its own about 5-6 years before being on "Sex & the City" in 2001 then "Gilmore Girls" in 2005. It may not have arrived for the masses prior to those shows, but the wealthy knew of them and were buying them for lots of $$. At the prices charged both then and now, there are no ordinary working women who wear them to the office to hold magazines. LL Bean has been around forever and is not a Dollar Store plastic beach bag. It is what folks with disposable income use for beach wear because even the super wealthy do not carry leather Louis Vuitton to the beach. Perhaps some other material, but not...

For those of us who were working class folks in the 80s, we carried the Kate Spade version of the Prada square bag. I still have it and my daughter wants it bad! Also, before online shopping, we had less time to shop and therefore fewer clothes that we wore and re-wore and re-wore. No "1 event" outfits like we have today.

I was young in 90's but I remember the decade. It was an amazing time. CBK was one of the style setters you would see in the many fashion magazines back then. (Remember those 2" thick magazines? With the great journalism and the award winning photography? Not to mention the new fragrance launch scent strips?) I remember Cindy Crawford and Linda Evangalista also embodied that cool girl, minimalist vibe.
Your video made me feel kind of sad. Since CBK's era we have slid into a time where everything is expensive but the quality of clothing is just not the same. Some of the best retailers have gone insolvent since 2020 and things are topsy turvey now. Looking back at those photos of CBK I recall a time when things were fun. The world was more stable. And fashion was exciting.

Great video but I couldn't help but giggle a it about how different our perspectives are between the generations. It was normal to re-wear clothing and accessories until they came to the end of their natural life in the 90s. Fast fashion and the impulse to buy a fresh wardrobe every season came later. I'm looking forward to a time when that comes back - everyone valuing their clothes and their style more when it meets longevity again, although this time, in the name of sustainability of course.

I never knew about her! But her style speaks to me and I'll take a deeper look because "less is more" is my mantra. I can't imagine a birkin fitting into luxury minimalism today, I think a garden party is wayyy better, but you're right at that the time the birkin wasn't really the BIRKIN of today.
Also LL bean is known for their quality and lifetime guarantee. If anything goes wrong with any item you get from there, they replace it even if its been 20 years. They only recently stopped this guarantee. I know people who used to look for LLBean at thrift stores, take it in to the store and get a brand new item. LL Bean definitely says "practical" but also quality, and I feel like it has a northeastern Trust Fund kid vibe.

Beatrice Borromeo reminds me very much of Carolyn Bissette-Kennedy, in more ways than one. Not only do they resemble each other physically, but their personal style is quite similar, even though they were decades apart. It is the "less is more" approach to their style choices, which is a classic and timeless elegance. Also, it is making the right choices for them.
That was something Audry Hepburn lived and breathed as well. Actually, all three of these beautiful women exuded self-confidence and independence, and they were all successful career women in their own right (with Beatrice still being very much alive, and well, of course). These women discovered beauty well beyond the pages of a magazine cover, or Madison Avenue.
They found true beauty from within and from the elements that surrounded them in nature, in the arts, and by participating in life's most valuable treasure, which is found in relationships.
All three of these rare beauties have one more thing in common that brought out the most exquisite expression in each one of them, and that was when they would interact with a child. I have never seen a more genuine purity in their smiles, than when they were holding a baby in their arms.

You are incredibly insightful. Thank you for such a comprehensive summary. My guess is that the L.L. Bean tote (the brand is very much of the preppy New England kind of fusty genre) was simply because she was at the beach and sailing, so it would withstand the water and salt air. The minimalist luxury philosophy requires that beautiful quality items are cared for, so she would never have taken a leather bag out on the water. Again, I enjoyed your video so much.

I was 13 when she passed away. Obviously my style at the time was waaaay different. But looking back as an adult of the same age, I love her aesthetic! She was minimalism & capsule wardrobe chic before it became a thing. I have some of what she does styles in my wardrobe, but I can appreciate her so much. She & Jackie weren’t brand whores, they shopped with intent & created trends. I miss that. Nowadays, people are walking billboards.

I agree with all the positive comments on Carolyn and admire insight of the presenter, both are terrific at what they are doing.
I also wonder ,working with fashion for so long , if Carolyn just was so well practiced that she was able to really pair her look knowing what works for her.
It reminds me how fashion designers come out at the end of their show wearing most simple, monochromatic look, some of them always the same. as if to say you are more important than your clothes. When we watch Carolyn we always see her first, and then what she is wearing.
I think that is the secret of style: to RESIST everything that doesn't work for you , for your body type, comfort, lifestyle, .....not to worry others will comment: "you always look the same"

    • @MarysRoom
      @MarysRoom  Рік тому
