  • Have you ever wondered how to customise Stellarium landscape to your location?
    Creating a custom landscape for use with Stellarium will change the way you plan an astronomy viewing or imaging session so you can make the best use of your clear nights, this tutorial includes how to create and edit a panoramic image as well as set up the information file required by Stellarium.
    Below are two popular examples of free image stitching software available online
    Microsoft Image Composite Editor (ICE)
    Autostitch
    For phone users download
    360 Panorama from the app store
    note- the built in 'pano' feature on the stock iphone camera doesnt work very well
    Tips for landscape.ini (copy below)
    1 - angle_rotatez = has a range from 0 - 359, you will need to use some trial and error to align north in your image with north on Stellarium, edit this in the landscape.ini file and save to your custom folder that we create in the video, you might need to spend some time fine tuning this.
    2- if you have an iphone and enable location services you can use the built in compass app to get your exact location by swiping right. Your GPS location will be at the bottom of the screen
    3- 'Name' will be how your custom landscape appears in stellarium
    4-'maptex' must match the name of your custom panoramic image
    Copy the below info into notepad amd edit the details to set your location
    [landscape]
    name = Custom Landscape
    description = Amateur Astronomy - Telescope, Binocular and Imaging Forum
    type = spherical
    maptex = landscape.png
    latitude = +50d48'42"
    longitude = +12d12'41"
    altitude = 220
    angle_rotatez = 165

    This is really great! Thank you so much for doing it! I followed the instructions and was successful in getting my back yard into Stellarium. It's soooo cool!

    Great - Thank you - Really useful. Now I can appreciate how little sky I can see in Stellarium as well as when out in the garden with the telescope. :-)

    Hope you are well. First thanks for a set of very clear instructions. If my health holds over the next few weeks then this is something i will do. I think this is one of the best videos on this subject. I saw an article on this subject in this months' sky at night and it was not clear at all. Thanks.

    This is great thanks for the instructional! I use Stellarium scope and Stellarium to control where I image. Now I need to get pano's from 2 of the DSS's I use and also my heavily polluted (Bortle 8-9) sky at home where I mainly conduct tests before packing up and heading to a DSS. This will give me much better planning accuracy for an evening.
    Well here I am a year later and actually ready to give this a shot now that I have a decent pano from my park OBS. Getting the editing done using GIMP is my only hurdle at this point so need to learn a couple of tools then I should have it. If I do it properly then I'll be able to plan a session from any of my pc's where I have Stellarium installed. My home OBS is where I plan to shoot everything and not have to travel as much. I am now using a cooled mono cam with all the filters plus a Optolong L Pro to take care of the local LP.
    Thanks again for sharing!

    Thanks for this. I had been thinking of doing one as I have only a good view of maybe half the sky and some very large trees. I'll give it a shot.

    Thanks for this tutorial - worked a treat! I just need to redo the panorama photo as the two ends didn't quite match up - so I'll take a bit more care with the next one :)

    Thanks for this video, will try it soon. I wonder if there a way to show only the (customized) landscape line in Stellarium? In other words, allow stars below the line to show through.

    I had trouble moving my compass points around until I renamed the angle_rotates to a Z = xxx and placed it higher in the text file good video. thanks

    maptex = everest.png
    angle_rotatez = 260
    [location]
    planet = Earth
    latitude = +33d05'42"
    longitude = +96d16'29"
    altitude = 164

    I don't need to see my surroundings on my screen. I would like to be able to make the ground lower on my screen.

    Hi, I had an older version of a custom landscape, but this much better, although I have one issue I can't seem to solve !
    my image horizon is about 12 deg too low at -12 and not zero ? can you help please.

      if your horizon is set too low you will need to go back to the part when we back filled below the image horizon, you will need to raise your image and fill the void. this should push everything up, if you have very large trees you might find you need to clip some of the tree tops

    You're explaining well how to calibrate azimuth by setting north. How to calibrate elevation as well ?

    • @jaymanu12345
      @jaymanu12345 4 роки тому +1

      Hello. I found a solution to calibrate elevation, if it might help someone :
      - Measure the angular height in ° of a tall building or tree, using a clinometer or a phone app
      - Measure this same height in pixels on the picture
      - Extrapolate the amount of pixels needed for 180°
      - Enlarge the picture to this height in pixels. You need to calculate how much to add up and down, in order to get the horizon exactly in the middle
      - Note that the picture doesnt seem to need being of a precise size like 1024, a random size worked for me
      Now the sun is setting down the right building corner, so I assume it worked right

    • @kingkevinhector
      @kingkevinhector 4 роки тому +2

      @@alanjose1724 so I got it to work. You have to make sure there are section titles for [Landscape] and [Location] in the ini file. Then the custom landscape appeared in the landscape options when I restarted stellarium. My picture was crap though so I might need to do that bit again.
