In defense of Diana's wedding dress, the venue was massive, a seating capacity of 3,500 and total height of 365' (Westminster Abbey 2,000 capacity and 225' tall) and it was felt that a massive gown with a long train was needed to fill the space, to give the guests something to look at and not everyone would have an prime seat to be able to see it. Think of the choice of the scale of the gown being analogous to QEII's bold, colorful gowns which were worn to draw attention to her in a crowd. The larger the gown, the easier it would be for those further from the aisle to see. The long train was also chosen to give guests something to look at after Diana had passed by and (again) to fill the space on the long shots and aerial shots from within the cathedral. The exagerated details of the gown were echoing the oppulance of the Victorian Belle Epoque, where even larger sleeves were seen and more massive skirts of earlier Victorian fashion were fashionable. Compared to the detail of a high Victorian gown, Diana's was soft, understated, and romantic, a departure from the trends of gowns from the previous decades. It was the right gown for the venue and time, but the carriage wasn't the right transport for the easily creased paper taffeta used to make the gown.
Meghan's gown was abominable. I understand she kept changing her mind during the making of the gown's construction, and so it ended up to be ill-fitting.
    Catherine's gown was magnificent.

You have a point but I still find Diana's gown ugly despite being an 80s teen. It could have remained big but with a better design. And they should have factored in the carriage so maybe a detachable train or could have been added to the gown once Diana got out of the carriage. And the material should have been the type that is not so easily creased.

  • @limeygal1

I sat up to watch Charles and Diana get married, she got out of the carriage and I said. Oh my god what the hell where they thinking. It looked like she had slept in it and was a terrible design, At Catherine"s wedding I sat praying Please please get out of that car and look beautiful and not like Diana did. I stood up and cheered when she got out. She was beautiful and the dress was stunning. So hands down Catherine's dress will always be the best and I still check her out to see what she's wearing.

I have to defend Diana’s dress 😂 it was 1981-EVERYTHING was excess, over the top. When she emerged from that coach, it gave PRINCESS. By todays standards, WAY too much. But at the time, that dress was EVERYTHING. She was 19 and had the foresight to know she had to do something SO iconic, people would never forget it-and she did.
Catherine’s is timeless and elegant, even 13 years later a bride could wear something similar and still be on trend. Fit impeccably.
Meghans dress was abominable. Terribly fit, too thick, too blinding white, shapeless-the veil was too long, the hair was messy & disheveled. Just bad.
Ironically Diana’s dress cemented the Emmanuel’s careers, Catherine’s dress made Sarah Burton a superstar-but Meghan’s Clare Waight Keller kinda took a hit for that dress. I think perhaps ppl saw that she had little control over her design because Markle was so demanding and fickle.

Some things were over the top but not everything....... at he time Diana's dress got a very poor reception and people were generally disappointed..... especially when she got out of the coach and the dress was quite creased and looked a bit ugly.....The marriage ceremony was a public holiday which a lot of people weren't happy about ......some people didn't get paid .......so there was quite a bit of resentment about it at that time.... they Didn't want the day off or rather they didn't want to lose a days wage...... There wasn't a flood of Diana style wedding dresses afterwards either....

A separate note on Meghan's dress. It was fluorescent white, like you see white under a black light! It had that blue-ish tinge that made it look cold like her. It was a big FU to the queen. Queen Elizabeth did have the power to take away her red carpet, so the neon effect was dulled against the cold stone floor of the church. Catherine's dress, and the queen's wedding dress both had the traditional flowers embellished in their gown or veil, but Meghan had to out do them by including flowers from ALL the commonwealth instead of the four flowers from the British isles. She has to have the last laugh while copying everyone else. The tides have turned on her, thank goodness!

I agree. I also think that style of bridal dress was in fashion during that year. After the engagement was announced in 1981, Diana attended the wedding of Nicholas Soames and his ex-wife, Catherine because then Prince Charles was his best man. Catherine wore a wedding dress that was very similar to Diana's although a lot more plain without the lace, bows and long train. As she was around 6 feet tall, she carried it off well.

Ohhhhh BEEBS I was lucky 🍀 enough to see Diana's wedding gown at an exhibit of her most iconic dresses/outfits many years ago. It really was spectacular. Her wedding dress was amazing - they actually had the train and veil completely extended so you could see how very long it was. Being married in 1984 my dress resembled Diana's lol
Princess Charlene's was very understated but classic in every way.
Markle's was hideous right down to the fit.

When I got married in 1996 I did have a princess style ball gown but not puffy on the top. It is the one time in my life I got to be a princess.

The embellishments and ruffles were the signature style of the Emmanuels then. Lady Diana had one of their ruffled blouses she loved so much. I doubt very much she would've chosen them to make her gown if she didn't like their designs. The gown really made an impression on 16 year old me. I saw it close up in an exhibition here in Sydney, Australia. The mother of pearl sequins on her veil and on Queen Mary's lace on the bodice and in the sleeves was genius. Something never seen before on a royal bride, and they sparkled beautifully under the lights at St. Paul's. The pearls and sequins embroidered around the flower basket lace on the bodice were breathtaking. I have the book "A Dress for Diana" by the Emmanuels, and you can see all the love gone into the making of the gown ❤

I disagree about the white, white is traditional at any age. But I think Megan’s vail was definitely too much and really an attempt to call back to Diana’s extreme train without having the actual extreme train. I think she should have had a much nicer hair style with just the tiara and skipped a vail altogether. I know people who got married for the first time much older and wore white and people who got married for the first time younger and wore very colorful dresses. I actually didn’t mind the simplicity of Megan’s dress, that I thought was more akin to an older bride, simple and not over done. I didn’t even mind it being a little loose, but it was too loose in some spots and I think the train should have been shorter since it was so simple. But over time, the more I look at photos, to me the fabric looks thick and heavy.

80s bride here. I had the Princess Diana dress for my wedding and while it was stunning, you are correct that it was a lot of dress. I'm 4'11 and I was 91 pounds the day I got married. There was three times more dress than me. I look at the pictures and I was a tiny head on a big dress. It was also very heavy. (There were like 30 pounds of petticoats to make that full skirt, not to mention the tain.) Mine was hemmed correctly, so I wasn't tripping on it, but I needed help with the volume of the skirt behind me and the giant train.
I had those same big sleeves (mine might have been puffier) and I couldn't see around them and if I turned too quickly I had a face full of sleeve. (I think they actually stood up taller than my head.)
She got married in July. I got married in June of 1989 in Arizona. It was hot and that dress was HOT. I know they were in London, but I'll bet that dress was hot too.
I can sympathise with how much that dress would have been for her and my wedding wasn't near as big as hers.
My dress was beautiful, but if I had it to do again, yeah, I'd go with much less dress.

I was around when Lady Diana married Prince Charles. At the time I felt that Diana was drowning in the dress. I agree with you that it was just too much for her.
Megan's dress was not tailored and seemed stiff. I do agree with the Queen that it should not have been white and should not have a veil. The veil did not match the dress style and was too over the top with the embroidery and length.
Princess Charlene's dress was beautiful. The embroidery was exquisite and the cross fabric at the neckline would have helped Meghan. The whole look with the veil, train, and hair was so lovely.
Princess Catherine's dress was said to have been inspired by Princess Grace's and Princess Margaret's gowns. The lace neckline and sleeves with the embroidery and tulle was beautiful. The earrings she wore were a gift from her parents and had little acorns which reflected the coat-of-arms that was given the Middletons by the Queen.

DIANA was a child when she had married.
A very young girl who had "little girl dreams" who wanted to capture all of that on her Wedding day and did !
Every young girl who had watched Diana's Wedding were so excited and envious seeing "dreams do come true" !
We all could identified with her and it wasnt the 2020s. .
Diana believed with her whole heart she was a FAIRYTAIL PRINCESS as we all did
Diana beleived you marry your PRINCE as you ride
    off in a ROYAL CARRIAGE...
Believing married life would be so magical and so in love forever but it wasnt reality and
Walt Disney could not have done it any better!
Diana was truly a Fairytail Princess in the flesh and her gown revealed it and she should have worn glass slippers to make it all complete !
We were all in love with her ! And we watched her grow as her fashion and confidence took off
throughout the years.! She was a Barbie in fashion!
While CATHERINE was an older woman wanting a far different image. She envisoned herself representing The Monarchy and Royal.
She was not a child and knew her Prince for a decade and could handle reality because she was realistic and had experienced life and lived among the middle class. Catherine had put effort and perfection into that moment knowing her Wedding was a part of History in the making. She carried herself down the red carpet in such a beautiful way. Her gown was elegant and form fitting, suited for a Princess of
a modern day design of Princess Grace own Wedding gown! We were in awe and remain so and she has never disappointed !
Catherine's Royal Wedding outdid even Princess Ann's.
    BUT
MM gown and wedding had many flaws. Little effort and perfection was taken in consideration
The whole Wedding day, from up those stairs ....to the wedding march .... to the gown its self ...All failed miserably!
It was a terrible disaster! You covered your eyes not to see the mishaps and those blinders ! It was so very painful ! Did she forget?
It was all meant to be a Royal Wedding and it clearly was not ! 😮 😢

Did not care for Diana’s wedding dress at all. Was very disappointed to see her emerge and walk up the steps. The dress, train & veil just seemed to emerge forever. Everything was very overdone, but reportedly exactly how Diana wanted it.
Markel’s dress was awful - color & veil were very inappropriate. The fit was poor and unattractive. Her reception dress was fine, but not great.
Catherine’s dress was stunning in fit, design. The veil was graceful. Her reception dress was very pretty.

I never liked Diana's wedding gown. I thought it was ugly then, and it's ugly now. I'm not a fan of busy, and that dress was REALLY busy. And you're right, that train was way too long. The saving grace? It was a royal wedding, full of fairytale glamour, and it was lovely to witness.
At the time, I didn't think much of Markle's dress, but with time, I realized it was pretty blah, and the whole wedding was over the top, considering she'd been married before and wasn't marrying the heir to the throne. I don't know what the RF was thinking, but they let her get away with far too much regarding the wedding. The dress should not have been pure white; the veil and train had no business being as dramatic as they were. Incorporating flowers of all the Commonwealth countries seemed presumptuous then and even more so now. For all Markle's bleating about wanting a whimsical, romantic dress, the overall presentation was far from it. She looked like she couldn't be bothered to look special that day. Her hair was a mess.
The embellishment on Princess Charlene's wedding dress was very pretty and feminine. Catherine's dress hit all the right notes and is the best of the bunch. It was romantic, and she looked beautiful.

"I don't know what the RF was thinking " is what many did thought of that. I watched other channel that had the interviewer asked the questions to Markle regarding on her wedding dress, even asked her about Queen's thoughts, Markle skipped the question, " I made all the decisions" snub over the interviewer. It gave me an impression RF and Markle may been on not same page over dress those days as go over the dress. I believe in the end of day Queen did not want to hurt Harry 's feeling the most. However, I agree with you, on white issue for her being married before. She could have a dark ivory or dark cream with a soft gold with flowers hair band would be a pretty one.

Hi Beebs....great wedding dress input. I was married two years before Diana and watched that wedding as it went live. My dress was absolutely gorgeous, and still is relatable, but nothing like Diana's. I wish I could send a photo so you could see a gown from the same time period. In retrospect, I agree with much of your views, especially trying to imagine seeing her dress without the 70/80s trends and vibes while living the styles. Back then, there was so much going on in fashion, home interiors(my profession), crafts and even movies etc. It was a time when everyone was tea-dying unbleached muslin and making accent pillows and homemade handicrafts and faded and dusty colors...that county rustic look in everything. Tailoring was not essential to the fashion trends. I remember maternity dresses being big and flouncy to "hide" the fact that you were losing your figure as long as possible. Diana's dress, as wrinkled as it was, looked like she was a symbolic angel on a cushion. The photos of her, especially sitting with mounds of fluffy (albeit wrinkled) fabric, made her look like the innocent young girl, sitting on clouds or whipped cream and seemed to reflect the purity of being offered up as a virgin that she was expected to be. As crazy as it was, as she unfurled it all on television, it personally gave me goose bumps! The only thing that really fell flat for me was her hairstyle. NOTHING negative was really reported about her gown that I can remember. She was the golden girl, the angel sent to the royal family and the hope for happiness in the royal family and for Prince Charles. Looking back, it's fascinating and sad so see how all of that feeling in the air played out to be such a tragedy. The saving grace in that marriage is the hope in Prince William, along side of Princess Catherine makes it a union that was meant to be.

@swissuz: You’re the only one I’ve ever seen comment on Diana’s hairstyle that day! 👍 That was the very first thing that looked “off” to me because her hair didn’t look right with the fussy dress and tiara. It looked like she was going off to play tennis or something.
I don’t know what a stylist could have done to make the hair suit the dress and tiara better - but feel someone surely could have come up with an idea to blend the two together!
Re the wrinkled dress, I do recall somebody on tv saying that, to them, Diana stepping out of the carriage in the wrinkled dress, reminded them of a chrysalis emerging from its cocoon as a beautiful butterfly! I thought that was a lovely comment.

I did feel badly for her that her lovely train seemed to roll itself into a tube-like shape as she walked back and forth from signing the registry and then departed the ceremony. I asked a very knowledgeable seamstress about what could have caused that problem and she thought that the designer would have made an underskirt/ petticoat to support the skirt and train. The wedding day was a scorcher and my friend wondered if Charlene chose to not wear the underskirt to help combat the heat.

I'm a year older than Diana and I loved the dress. What 21 year old wouldn't in 1981? The reports were that because she was getting married in St Paul's Cathedral, the dress and it's train had to be larger than life so not to be swallowed up by the grandness of the setting. That's why the train was so long.
I remember when she stepped out of the carriage and she was a wrinkled mess. I can still remember the Emmanuels working to get the dress smoothed out, which they succeeded in doing.
Would I wear those sleeves now. No, but in 1981...you betcha. Because I was young and that was the style.
I loved every royal wedding dress since then except for Meagan's, because they reflect the bride and the era they were made and worn.
Diana's dress reflected her and her era as well. The 70s had just ended...and I look back at what I wore during high school and laugh with embarrassment...but I was stylin' then.

There’s a lot to be said for classic simplicity. Camilla’s outfit for her wedding to Charles was beautiful and suitable for a woman of her age marrying for the second time. Beautiful and dignified.
But I won’t fault the barely-20 year old Diana, marrying the heir to the throne, inside huge and majestic St Paul’s Cathedral. I remember being shocked at how different her wedding dress looked on the mannequin as opposed to her wedding day. It looked much less “poofy” and busy. Not sure if she had some kind of slip underneath that poofed it out on her wedding day, but it was much more subdued on the mannequin. The other shock was how tiny it was in size. The waist was incredibly small. You would have never guessed that on her wedding day because of how much the dress engulfed her.
