If you go back and watch the G1 series’s first few episodes, a big motif through those stories is that the Autobots are a bunch of scrappy civilians fighting against a military power over an allegorical food shortage. They’re completely outmatched and overpower… except for wherever Optimus Prime happens to be. The Autobots have fighters, scrappers, brawlers, and some tough bots, but Optimus Prime is the only real soldier in their ranks. Plenty of people know who Cullen modeled Prime’s voice after. He’s basically characterized as a Marine who took charge and leads a volunteer army against a war machine (Cold War US v Russia allegory, am I right?). Prime was the bulwark that held back the inevitable genocide the Autobots faced. In episode two, he single-handedly turns a defeat into victory after showing up at the last minute. Having Prime depicted as such an overwhelming force in this run of the comics triggers that core memory of mine as a child watching Transformers and being in awe of both Prime’s toughness and his compassion. For what amounts to the lead character of a 22-minute toy commercial, the bot was a hell of a roll model to a lot of kids back then. I’m glad to see the character being treated right. He’s not just tough as he also values life and strives with everything he has to protect it.
Beast Wars even confirmed that Optimus leading the Autobots is why the Decepticons lost... which is exactly why the Predacon Megatron tried to kill him while he was in stasis.
