WHO says Bird flu risk to humans an "enormous concern,” but what should you know?

  • As the H5N1 bird flu continues to spread globally among different mammals, the World Health Organization's chief scientist, Jeremy Farrar, is warning that the risk to humans remains an "enormous concern."
That comes just weeks after a case was reported in a human in Texas who had recent contact with dairy cows. The virus itself has been circulating since 1996, with the most recent outbreak starting in 2020.
As Global’s Sean Previl reports, at this time there is a very low risk for humans and no need to change their day-to-day activities, but there are still precautions that can be taken globally.

Yes, bird flu has been around a long time. I wonder if it mutates at nearly the same rate as SARS-Covid II, since the “normal” flu viruses don’t seem to mutate as fast. I think the difference now is so many more people who are immunosuppressed, compared to 1918. We have people immunosuppressed due to organ transplant, and for other reasons, which provide a greater opportunity for a virus to mutate. I still wear a mask indoors in public and avoid indoor shopping when cases are high.

A case-fatality ratio based on an accurate and all-inclusive count of cases would be invaluable, but unfortunately it is impossible to attain. The ability to diagnose every case of H5N1 as it arises does not exist. A few small reported studies have attempted to gather preliminary data on this crucial statistic, by carrying out systematic blood testing of neighbors and contacts of fatal cases where there had been confirmed H5N1 fatalities. In most cases this testing failed to turn up any overlooked mild cases.

Honestly, stricter adherence to PPE and sanitization for farm workers (stopping spread at the source) and using the correct handling and pasteurization methods for milk/safe handling/cooking of beef for now (fda recommends medium well to well done to eliminate live viruses), that's enough to reduce the risk of this becoming a human-to-human virus.
I'm still eating beef (fully cooked) and using some dairy products, but I was also considering reducing consumption of animal products already anyway to help lower my cholesterol, so this just sped up the process a little.
The fda did not find any live virus samples in powdered products, so powder baby formula and the like are ok right now. I have a baby so I'm keeping my eye on things. As long as dairy and meat are handled safely, I don't expect an outbreak.

@@MyvPops818 There are such limited profit margins on dairy farms. I hope the government and/or states help provide the financial support dairy farmers need to protect themselves and their staff. I hope dairy farmers are willing to cooperate in all states. One difficulty is the southern states where temperatures are so high, it makes it difficult to wear more layers.
If people lost loved or cherished ones during Covid, or have long covid, they know enough to mask and follow the covid protocols rather than risking their health. Thankfully many of the stores have pick-up areas still functioning, and many folks can work from home, too. We learned much during Covid.

SARS Covid 2 is still circulating, infecting and hospitalizing people. It continues to mutate as viruses do. The bird flu has been around since 1959, but over time has evolved variants which are affecting more birds and mammals, 21 types of mammals so far in the US. There is evidence it has bounced from birds to cows and back to birds, which gives it more opportunity to mutate.
