I was looking to support a large tree! I'd give the kit a miss sure most folks have plenty knocking about to support a tree that size! Thank you for the demonstration! :)

I've read that the current thought on this is to just plant the tree and let it sway in the breeze. The idea being that the action of the wind on the tree will strengthen the trunk. But what do I know.

Hello Miles: Yes, I have heard this too. You can give a tree too much support, and in doing so make it weaker!
I went on a Countryside management course, and they said that you can still stake trees, but have a very LOOSE tie in order for the tree to move about. This makes the tree and the roots stronger.

Yeah like when a strong storm comes and rips your newly planted tree out of the ground …. You got a dead tree not a stronger one

I followed this guidance to the letter, plus using my own kit, which was a little more robust. Result, in some blustery conditions two of the large container grown trees I bought at £249 each snapped in half. I contacted ornamental trees, who were not aware of the comments below, shame on them. My strong advice, seek guidance on planting large container grown trees elsewhere, because in current climatic conditions you are going to need straining wires or equivalent.

Helpful but your prices for two bits of wood and a few nails is absurd.

Interesting that a small tree is used to show how to stake a large tree. What if the tree is actually much larger, and then much heavier?

Christopher Akins, you can use 3 foot lengths of rebar. You will need to pound them down until almost flush. Then using a clove hitch attach a rope and the put a loop at the end of it, then pull on it so the rope will not come of and pound it the rest of the way until it is flush with the soil. These should be placed three or more feet away and about and 45 degree angle from the trunk. now you can connect rope to the tree. make sure that you protect the trunk with a soft item like a small section of hose. I have been transplanting large trees for about 15 years, this way will work for large trees or trees in a windy environment.

terrible. those flimsy pieces of wood wont do anything is a strong breeze, other than snap!

its ok but very basic .. You don't need to cut both side (save time & effort) Just on side make bigger and make 1 cut..

Why are you doing this? There's no problem to fix. That bark is going to rub and shear itself off as it grows, as the wind blows, etc.

Large tree??? That's a small tree. Why can't I find anything on UA-cam about staking a larger tree so it doesn't fall on your house because you can't afford to have it cut down.

Not bad guys but in my opinion you need to refine your techniques.
