- A spontaneous stop in Big Timber, Montana and the CRAZY MOUNTAINS gave us great small town Montana vibes with views of snowcap mountains all around us. This stop was a great place if you are traveling from Billings to Bozeman and want enjoy a great small town or really get off the beaten path and explore some beautiful mountains. In this video, we share with you the Crazy Mountains in the Gallatin National Forest, the Crazy Mountain Museum, and the town of Big Timber. Enjoy!

We are a family of 4 who loves to travel. In 2019, we bought a 30 ft. travel trailer and decided to make our dreams happen by getting out on the road. Since then, we have upgraded to a 39' Fifth Wheel Mid-Bunkhouse and a 2018 Ford F-350 Diesel and are loving the upgrade for our family. We have always LOVED traveling and now seeing our world on the road has given us opportunities to see and make more memories as a family. We are teachers and are blessed to have the same "vacation" schedule, so we make the most of it with our kids by being both weekend warriors and by "school schedule" traveling--We call ourselves summer-timers. We hope to share what we learn while exploring this beautiful world around us and inspire you to get out and see it too.

You need to go up the main Boulder Valley south of Big Timber. There is NUMEROUS campgrounds & a few forest service cabins for rent as well.
If your in the mood for a great day trip you can go all the way up to Independence, which is a Ghost Town with the remains of the old miner cabins scattered around. At the very end of the road sits Blue Lake. Extremely beautiful country!

The Crazy mountains used to be called the "Crazy woman mountains" named after Jeremiah Johnsons 1st wife I believe because she went nuts. The movie, although not filmed here, was based on his time spent here and also in Wheatland county/Musselshell valley. Nice video.

Avoid staying at the River Valley Inn,
It's a small hotel in Big Timber. I'd rather spend the night in a phone booth with a pair of wild bobcats.
