- Workshop Wednesday: DIY Tool Cart - My New Spinny Tool Rack!
I finally got around to building an updated tool rack for my lathe tools and accessories. I bought a sheet and a half of 3/4” plywood and (6) 2” fixed cast iron casters for the turntable part - everything else was leftover or scrap from another project. This heavy-duty lazy susan style of rotating tool rack is an improvement on the rack I made by modifying an existing rotating cart thing. I added tool holder for my lathe tools and accessories and will likely continue to tweak it as I use it and find out what works and what could be improved.

I’ve been doing 14 things at once and it looks like it! I think I’m done building things for a bit and can spend a day putting the shop back together and then work on some big maple pieces I have 😁

The whole thing needs to go on bigger lockable wheels so you can move it around the shed easily 🙂
Hey Chris! That was the plan initially. I have 3” grey poly swivel casters I was going to put the whole thing on but I fought it so hard to get it level/flat that I decided to let it be stationary. There’s actually more room behind it to get to the shelving unit and the other hardware cart is actually a 4’ scaffolding I made shelves for so it moves out of the way if I need it to. I figure there are always sliders if I *really* need to move it 😂

I bought some metal brackets for holding plumbing pipe off a wall. They have a 1” hole in them, and screw onto the wall. I use them to hold all my tool rests. I don’t bend like I used to, and I noticed you have to bend over to access yours. I do really like the cart
Hi Scott! I hear you but I have no more wall space. I’m only keeping the tool rests and coring system on the bottom shelf so hopefully it won’t be a big deal. Ask me again in a few years 😂
And I’m big on using plumbing and electrical hardware - unistrut, offset clamps, conduit…all the things! 😁
Nicely done! I really like the idea of these carousel-type tool storage units. Klondike Craftsman showed one he made for his lathe tools very recently too. I might have to make one if I can find a space for it!

You're an inspiration, lady! I've only just got my first lathe, and am starting to figure out where to put my gear. I Like your spinning tool rack! So it's a future fixture in my workshop!

I don’t have so much trouble with my lathe things but god forbid I’m looking for something else in the shop. I keep reorganizing and finding homes for things and then I can’t remember where I put them! Totally frustrating. And I think I spent more time during this project walking around the shop looking for one of the 6 tape measures I’ve been using or one of the 12 pencils. I stick the pencils on my hair, but there never seems to be one there when I need it. And then I’ll go back to the house for the night and I’ll have a pencil in my hair. So soon I won’t have any pencils in the shop, they’ll all be in the house!🙄😂 getting old sucks 😜

looking good Lisa,I have my stuff on wall behind the lathe as we know shop gets clutered real fast with stuff we think is necessary,not sure,but is what it is,I have redone mine twice so far
Hi Fran! This may not be the last time I’ll mess around with this but hopefully it will be for a while! I didn’t want anything stored on the wall behind my lathe cuz I don’t want it be tempted to reach over & get something while the lathe is running and end up a bloody mess. I think this should do nicely for me 😁

Thanks for sharing this. I might be able to adapt that concept to build storage for my great-grandfather's hand Stanley hand planes. I have more than 40 of them. I don't have his treddle lathe or turning tools, unfortunately, though I do have some of the things he made on a lathe.

Hi Hans! I am very lucky and have a nice and large workshop now, but it is still full. What they say is true - the bigger the space you have, the more stuff you put into to it! 😂

You are so right about that!
Very cool idea. However I do see a problem in that the weight will never rest equally on the six wheels due to the inevitable flex in the plywood base. The wheels closest to the two edges fixed to the the vertical boards will always hold the majority of the weight, whereas the ply base will flex and reduce the load of the wheels closest to the open edges of the ply base. You can help offset this by adding stiffeners to the open ends of the base.
Also, you're always going to get scrubbing using this type of wheel set to a small radius...they are designed to track in a straight line only (ignoring the Chinese Q.C.).
Thank you! It’s working out ok - I switched to larger rubber coated casters and it spins a lot more easily now. Still amazed at how much stuff I can get on it!
i think the casters would be better if they were the plastic ones. they would grab less because they are closer to the magic bearings.
Yes possibly. I think the fact that they aren’t the size I should’ve gotten and that they are cheap made in China wheels with a lot of play are working against me but it spins fine. And if I decide to change it down the road, that’s always an option as well
Looks great. Will you be impacted by the stationary nature? Might be hard to get to stuff on the shelves behind it.
Hi Noel! The original plan was to put it on 3” swivel casters that I already have but I had so much trouble getting it to sit right I decided to use the leveling feet. There is actually more room to get to the shelves behind it than there was with the old rack there, and although it was on wheels I rarely moved it and just worked around it. The thing against the wall shelving is actually a 4’ scaffolding that I made shelves for so it moves if necessary. And honestly, if I HAD to move it I could either use sliders or just suck it up and empty it
Nice Spinny Tool Rack Lisa ! Some good ideas here. I'm just starting to think about how my chisels can be mounted and the floormat ends have merit. Hate to say it and DAMHIK but buy cheap cry many, but best cry once. Or is it pennywise pound foolish ? Oh well, what to do \_O_/ Take care. -Mike
Hey Mike! Yeah, I should’ve spent the extra $20 or whatever it would have been on the bigger casters, but at least it’s a minor problem. And not really a problem at all I s’pose cuz it spins, just not as effortlessly as it possibly could have. I don’t normally go the cheap route so I dunno what I was thinking! 🙄😂🤪

I just noticed the plywood on the laguna. Does that help? I have the same lathe. I like the spin shelf idea 💡. I’d have to go a little smaller or even something to sit in my bench
Hi Mark! Not sure what you mean about the plywood. I have a 2x4’ piece of OSB with a layer of the foam play mats glued to the top that I stand on while turning and that is leaned up against the lathe in this video. I do have a shelf on the lathe with about 200# of sand on it to help with vibration and a piece of Formica that’s slanted from the back to the front to help the chips/shavings slide toward the front of the lathe so it’s easier to sweep them up
