I owned a XMV6 SEI that was 5 speed manual. Year : 1990. It even had a factory installed key pad immobiliser. I loved the build quality and it never rusted like previous Citroen’s. I always regret letting it go. It was so comfortable and fantastic on those long trips. I know it was expensive to maintain but was worth it. I even had it re-sprayed. It looked fantastic. It’s reg was G589 ARV.
This is one of the most beautiful cars ever made! Since then Citroen has lost it's spirit :( The only wrong thing with this particular one is the fact that is missing the one-spoke steering wheel.
Thanks Andy! You made me buy an XM again! I had 7 of ém in the past, but after a horrible C6 and a dull and charackterless C5 Tourer, i am now back in a MINT condition XM 2.1 Turbo CT! Love your video's! You're te best!

Great review. You actually get it. I missed the XM era but owned a 24V V6 Xantia, which shared the series II XM motor. It wasn’t anywhere near as exotic as the XM but it certainly had a great ride and a certain presence. Today, I own a 2009 C6 with the 2.7 24V Hdi, which I’ve maintained fastidiously, and it has now covered nearly 200,000 kms. Believe it or not, it has actually been very reliable although it’s certainly not inexpensive to maintain. EGR valves are expensive on parts and labour and they’ve needed replacement. The interior and electronics have been bulletproof. The leather looks as good as the day it left the showroom; no cracking and barely any wear on the driver’s door side bolster. Wherever you drive it feels like an occasion and I often catch people taking a look in the car park. One guy in a Range Rover asked me if I’d sell it to him while I was refuelling. What would I replace it with was my answer.
I used to own a 3 liter v6 xantia regret ever getting rid of it. And i look weekly at the secondhand c6 market. Great cars you had mate and still have.
About the steering... That Diravi seems to not be working properly, usually they are super quick and precise, plus it should be able to get back to the center position without help even with the car stopped. Probably the center sphere of the suspension (which operates the steering) is going bad.
I have owned the same car with a 24v manual engine. that one was pretty fast for his time but most of all , very very comfortable and cool.that lifting suspension was sometimes also very usefull for preventing the bottom of the car hitting against sidewalks or other objects during parking or turning.
Meu father hás a XM 93/94 here in Brazil, São Paulo, marvelous car to trip and moving by the cityes...great remembers of family in this forever cara👍🏼👍🏼
Still miss my late series one XM TD with full leather and all the options list ticked. It handled far better than its contempories. Hydractive worked perfectly.
Good review! I tested a post-facelift XM V6 on my channel (it's in Polish though so you might have issues understanding what the actual fuck I'm saying) and loved every second of driving that thing. The comfort is out of this world (like in most other "magic carpet ride" Citroens - and I've driven a few, including a Xantia Activa which is a Citroen that can actually corner), the style is just art (although the one I tested was silver and I fucking HATE silver cars with a burning passion) and the overall experience is just like you described it: special. And it makes you feel special. Two things though. 1. Yes, many things could go wrong with these things but it's not true that, as you said "it might not even start tomorrow". Ok, with that PRV engine (used also by Peugeot, Renault and, what's interesting, Volvo in their 260, 760 and early 960 models) wasn't very good but some time after the facelift they replaced it with 190 HP ES9 V6 which was much, much better. They will start just fine and work day in, day out, as long as you don't neglect the maintenance. Also, the suspension wasn't that bad in terms of reliability. However, it needed good maintenance and if you neglected it, things went very wrong very quickly. The worst things about these cars are electrics/electronics (partially fixed in the facelifted version) and the absolutelly shitty attitude of PSA (now Stellantis) towards older models. There are no parts. None. Zero. If something goes south and you can't find a used part in good condition, you're fucked. Fortunately, there are several companies (e.g. Chevronics) who started making some parts for older Citroens and I've heard XM is next on their list. 2. The brake isn't that bad once you get used to it. For me, it took about half a minute to get how it works - and that knowledge can be applied to all older Citroens with hydropneumatics. Apart from that - great review. Cheers from Poland!
Wicked car. I'm looking for contenders to make a conversion to fully electric drive train, I'd love to do it with something like this which has that supreme driving comfort already. If you don't have to worry about fuel economy or engine / gearbox problems, it would just mean keeping an eye on rust (not too bad on these) and of course the suspension and electrics. I'm thinking a lot of the electrics could be simplified, I'd be tempted to control the windows, mirrors, seat position, heater etc off of an iPad mounted where the stereo sits under that wooden cover, and cut my own replacement trim panels to forego the stock control switches. Thanks for the review!
Dan Katz hi Dan, That would be awesome to do. Ideally you would completely strip this and upgrade all the wiring and relays etc. Buy yes this is awesome to drive.
The one and only perfect car for me. Unmatched to this very day. If you ever drove an XM *and* know a better ride I'm happy to hear about it - if you never drove one you simply don't know the benchmark.
My previous XM was a 2.0 auto and only after 23 years remaining outside and never cleaned some rust appeared. In all 400kkm only standard parts replacement except for that one time when the timing belt broke and that cost me 16 new valves. But that engine is all over the place so no XM special thing. Autobox - same as your review, but less torque to handle in a 2liter engine- at 400kkm still flawless. This car was by far the cheapest per km that i ever owned. and utterly reliable. Btw i owned a 3.0 and when driving over 150kmh, let's say 180 on Autobahn, feeling diravi and suspension stiffen to a become super stable driving.. Then going down to 20kmh and steer with one finger..fantastic. Nevertheless i liked your talking and driving through Dutch city traffic with ease. Maintenance?most of it DIY.
I really respect these cars. My father had an -95 XM 2.0T 150hp wagon and it was indeed like nothing else on the road. He sold it 2007 and got a 2006 C5 and today he has a 2013 C5. He says that til' this day, he still hasn't driven a car that's as comfortable as his old Citroen XM.
You don't look like a Citroeniste, so I kept waiting for you to get things wrong, but you did great! Although many people like the styling on the Series1 the Series2 cars are much better, 1995 onwards, the interior finishes & overall feel are just better. The V6 got 24v from 97 to 2000 & they're great, very fast for a big Cit, I've had about 5 I think, difficult to remember as I've had 18 altogether ;-) Great all round cars, and big with the seats down and hatch, but, when you get in a C6, the Xm, even a late one, do feel ancient. A great Cx is actually, in my opinion, the best overall big Cit. Ps, never seen an electric armrest fail ;-) Pps, you're in a S1.5 car which has the ugliest of the 3 steering wheels ;-( Ppps, never driven a Diravi Xm, so I was very jealous, but it looked like it wasn't working, I have it on my Cx and it turns back very noticeably.
Thanks chillmax, I am a big fan of large Citroëns and OMG yes I agree with you on the cx I would love a pallas with Louvre rear window in dark red and black leather. You made me laugh when you mentioned the steering wheel as I totally agree this is ugly I am looking for a single one with leather. And yes series one is much less reliable but a little cooler. My diravi is acting up but it is going in to an proper old Citroën garage and having everything done to her. Thanks for your comments what do you drive now.
Hey Fat, I think the louvre can go on any Cx saloon, but it's usually on the Turbo2, the fastest Cx; they did make a series 2 Cx in a bright red or burgundy interior, including some of the plastics, sounds like you would like that!! Don't know why that steering wheel happened on the Xm, there was no reason for it, but such is Citroen. Trust me, a late 24v, will walk over any earlier car, you will get over the visual changes; it's not just reliability, they feel better ;-) Currently in a Chevy Tahoe, just passing through, my Xm & C6 went last year to help pay for my massive Cx Safari restoration, labour of love, just with her today actually, wading through the new & old electronics, nearly there, then off to the trimmers for a totally new interior, can't wait ;-) Max
My Cx is in Kent, you can see what she looked like late last year near the top of My Videos, she's moved on a lot since then, but it's really painful restoring a classic car and a relatively tricky one at that. Worked on her for 6 hours today and I'm not sure what we did ;-)
8:46 Wrong! Take a look at the video of a Lotus Elan, Ford Granada and Citroen XM goimg through a slalom of cones. The Ford is hopeles, the Lotus is amazing and the XM almost keeps pace with the Elan. Your suspension must be buggered.
Hi Harold-Sweat-Head. I agree it is better than most other cars of its time but the review is not about that it's about what the car compares to modern cars now. thanks for your comment do you own a citroën yourself. thanks
Citroen Xantia Activa with active anti roll was even better than an Elan or any other car...all cars should have it today..instead we get digital radios........
Raced a mates mx5 around Tamworth egg islands and nothing in it .........hit sport button and lower it to the deck ....best handling car I've owned or driven in 30 years
Brilliant review and have to agree with you about the XM. I have a C5 V6 which ive spent quite some time working at to get back on the road but these big french barges are amazing things to waft about in. The XM V6 is getting harder to find but i ended up finding a 605 with the same engine and box as this XM.
If that engine and gearbox had ever made it’s way into my 1984 CX, I’d probably still be running it! The first time I drove one a couple of years earlier, accelerating out of a junction briskly scared the pants off me, I’d forgotten my old DS knowledge and careered over the white line at pace, luckily a deserted road. That never happened again.
Long time Citroënista here. Currently driving a BX GTI, while the wife drives a C5. Yes, I bleed green. Thanks for the video. Only bit where I disagree with you is the brake pedal. I love the brake action in my BX, anyway. I'm trying to convince a mate to buy an XM just like the one in your video. Posting this video on his facebook was golden, now he's tearing his hair out while his heart battles his brain :D
Totally understand your friend : I'm in the same situation. An italian guy bring an XM V6 to the Caribbean island where I live. The car has shows condition of been abandoned long time : dirty interior, some dashboard radio panel removed, transmission cover with buttons damaged. Want to make an offer but I'm worried about parts availability and information like a forum.
I absolutely loved this review. It makes me proud to own a Renault Vel Satis and appreciate it a bit more. These sort of cars are quickly judged and overlooked, such a shame but I guess it keeps the novelty and keeps them special cars for unique people
Heya - should try that later V6 (ES9 - eventually used in the Renault Williams Clio), with the auto adaptive gearbox. Finally, an engine and gearbox matched to the XM.
I owned one of those XM 24V 3.0, racing green all black leather. It cost me IR£ 48,000 in 1993 (€60,000.00) in 1993. Had great fun with it but it packed up with only 52,000 miles on the clock
I now own my third XM. Granted they where all 4 -cyclinders but they have overall been very practical and reliable. All 3 of them have taken me across the 300.000 km line with ease. The first one even sounded as new after more then 400.000 km and it still had a minimum oil consumption. I only got rid of the first 2 because keeping them in a cosmetic tip top shape became too expensive when compared to thier remaining economic value. That was however not caused by extreme maintenance costs but by their high depreciation. That same depreciation can however also be a good thing. I bought a 225.000 km one for Eu 2.750 more then 12 years ago. It has crossed 330.000 km by now but it stll shines. Even if I would park it against a tree tomorrow the depreciation I paid will have been ultra low. If you d not care about depreciation you can keep them running for ever anyhow. I even used to say that XM's NEVER rust. By now the sills are however beginning to rot. They are however not difficult to repair and we are talking about 25 old cars by now after all! My advice: Get a low mileage 4-cylinder now they are still cheap (People are starting to turn their heads again!), maintain it by the book and you'll be a very happy user. Keep an eye on those sills though. And one other thing: The best ones are those with as few electronic gadgets as possible. In spite of it's reputation the suspension electronics are very robust but the average electronic gadgets, so the ones one also finds on other cars, are less dependable.
That's a wonderful video. I came, saw and subbed ;) I agree fully with the last point. Nowadays everything just has to function nowadays, everything has to be connected. No uniqueness anymore. I have a C5, I sometimes notice that I just drive a detour before or after work, just to drive. Such cars really do feel special and driving them feels so too.
I had a 2.0 16v and I can't imagine I'll ever have anything better. a terrific cruiser, but as someone else said, if you start to hustle it tightens up beautifully. one of my pleasures was throwing it around Scottish mountain roads at indecent speeds and it handled it all with aplomb. only got rid after mot failure on a heinously expensive suspension bit. truly sad to see it go.
Hi mate. I had one 2.0 16v when i was kid, they were cheap , and this one had some carburetor failure.. i was runing out of fuel every 50 km i think, but when you love this car so much, you find way even with broken stuff that's consuming like German tank still to drive it .. why maybe people ask ? Because was the best feeling of comfort and smoothness that i ever experienced. It's like driving a fuc*ing boat on the calm sea ... Now i'm looking for 3.0 v prestige, and i'm going to look one next Sunday for 1000e.. hope i will get it. All best
That's awesome, I hope you find it ok and not too beaten up. Unfortunately I let mine go. It went on te a xm enthousiast so I don't feel too bad. Post some pics if you do buy mate please would love to see.
@@fullfatcars8174 Hey, so it's like this , owner was some director of big company here, and he had some driver to drive him on business trips. Now guy is late , and his grandson, sold car to the guy who don't have the time to maintain and do some minor works. Engine is perfect, gearbox also , and the body is also in good shape. Car spent most of the time in garage, so no rust. Little bit on the roof, lack is going of. around 250.000 km or 155.300k miles on it. Spheres are ok , everything is fine. Tomorrow if i make deal with him , i will post video here, and i will send you photos. interior is very light beige, and outside is like dark blue metalic. Owner installed lpg system , because he was not able to put fuel for daily ride, and now is around 8 pounds per 60 miles, when i convert from km per liters and price. So it's cheap now to drive it. Also , lpg system didn't affected engine performance too much. Still there is of course difference when is on petrol. I will come with more info's soon i hope. Cheers !
15-01-2021 an online check tells me that the beautiful Citroen has perished by this time ... it has seized to exist, just like my own. O well, life goes on.
My father owns 1995 Citroen XM 2.0 16v around 130HP. Really good engine. Its an awesome car. Over 200.000km on it, runs perfect. He owns it for 7 years, never had any problems. The only bad thing about it is fuel consumption, around 9+ liters in city driving. But in general, its really good car :)
Hi Dusan, Yes it can be a great car if looked after. And with this kind of car it's an occasion to go for a drive. Something to enjoy with your grandpa.
There is a modified XM in my country, Serbia. I never drove a XM However as a lifelong Citroen nut having owned many SMs DS`s and CX`s the hydraulic suspension and brakes are better then anything else.I drive my Caddy and when i hit the brakes I wish it braked like my DS =)
I would disagree with you about C5 reliability. Most reliable car that I have owned. Citroens in general are most reliable cars what I have owned. And I have owned a lot! German cars, Swedish cars, Japanese cars, Italian cars, American cars... And finally I bought a French car and my eyes opened. PSA makes the best cars! Cheap to maintain and buy.
Well that is the case with every car and make. But I can totally agree with you with Renault. And now days Nissan is half Renault so its the same S**t in different package. My father was a mechanic and he used to say that the only decent Renault can be found on a shelf of a liquor store.
@@JuTuFin the problem are megane or somes dci models combine the poor mainteinace owners... is not good. But somes models like Safrane or Laguna phase 1 are superb... But I have similar with Peugeot I don't like the 206 for example, but the 406 was a very good car
Didn't the XM have a so-called adaptive auto gearbox that adapts to your driving style, but can take ages to adapt to a new driver's driving style, despite it supposedly being able to dynamically react to driving style and road conditions? Maybe that had something to do with it? I also seem to recall that if you put it into Sport mode it should make a big difference.
No. All series 1 Xm used the old ZF 4HP18 Mechical autobox. It wasn't untill 1996 when the v6 was replaced with the newer V6 es 24v V6 engine that they used the Zf4hp20 box which was meant to be an adaptive box..
not agree with everything (we had 3 XM) - at higher speeds the steering and suspension get quite tight and it takes turns better than any limosine, its adaptive (electronically) => nothing like speeding a curvy road steering without almost toughing the wheel and not having to turn it more than some cm (if only the seats / sofas had more side support) - did many hundred kilometers down the croatian costs at night driving it hard all the time in the 90ies
Love it, it is the least PC car review I have ever seen lol. I have to disagree with a few of your comments especially about the handling and reliability but then my xm was a 2.1 turbo diesel manual. If you ever fancy reviewing a rather modified Integrale or the wife's xj6 send me a pm. Keep the cool videos coming.
gimenofm hi thanks for the comments. As with regards to reliability this car is abysmal, after this video was shot it decide to shit the bed again. It has not run now for more that a year nearly. And handling was always a little crap on these and I think that has three reasons. 1 the skinniest of tyres with very high tyre walls. 2 that gearbox omg 3 weight. And thanks for the offer you sound like a car guy. What other interesting cars have you owned or are still on your probably list. Where are you based. Thanks
On the way to F1 I had my foot down and thought I was going straight one at an island and my mate said " we are going right " so I hit sport button and lowered suspension to the deck .......it stuck like glue and howled the tyres ......they do handle and 2.1 diesel is good on fuel ...... reliably oh yes lol suspension , Speedo , indicators , seat , etc ....miss it
Nice video. But what about maintenance? I have driven mostly XM's since the 90's, and never had any catastrophic failures. Of course i am a bit of a Citropath. But i drive a heck of a lot, usually 50000km per year, and no XM regardless of mileage, age or condition has ever failed me. Of course, things have gone wrong in my millions of km's but nothing catastrophic at all. If you look after your upper strut mounts, hydraulic piping (like any other car) and some simple electrical connections (and the cooling on the 2.5TD), then it just....works usually. XM is actually a car of very few major weaknesses in my opinion. How many cars - even simpler ones - can go on for decades just with maintenance?
Hi, Well I think the problem with cats like these is that at one stage they become so cheap and unwanted that the next ain't going to repair them with genuine or if any parts. So once you are on a slope of poor maintenance it is going to cost shed loads to keep them good.
tell me i'm wrong ...you didnt even mention the fact, that the HP is controlled (and adapted !) by a computer !? aka "hydractive" !!?? instead of insisting on the "quirkyness"... :-(
I hafe owned in year 90’s the same color xm 3.0 and I got plesure for 2 year’s. I saled after for good price. But if you ask me if I want it back ? “No” couse it drunk to much 14 liter for 100km in city when you drived normal. 🤪
Actually all cars with no self levelling Hydropneumatic suspension are mad..the XM has the suspension all cars on the road should have today...not springy pieces of metal...that is so caveman quirky and mad... Full Fat says oh yeh things are going to go wrong after telling us this example has done 297000kms.....maybe not so often huh Full Fat?
Hey truth seeker, True that this is a very comfortable and way more advanced setup than coils. But it comes at a price and that price is complexity and expense. Sometimes caveman technology is sufficient regarding expenses. As for that this car has done many kms and cost money to repair. This xm has had in excess of 30 thousand euros spent on it in its lifetime. And that is excessive I think especially if you consider it still needs work.
@@fullfatcars8174 Modern 2019 production techniques and design could make the Hydropneumatic system cheaper and even more sophisticated. No doubt your car has power steering and I am sure you don't complain that it is too sophisticated and too expensive....I am sick of feeling every bump in my 2017 model car when I have previously driven DS Citroens for 35 years and know how reliable, comfortable and stable they are...unfortunately there are no Hydropneumatic cars for sale today because people don't appreciate what it is and prefer a digital radio...
The ride quality of PSA-ed Citroens (XM and onwards) is overrated and easily matched by air suspensions of e.g. German brands. This is thanks to PSA cutting costs and using regular suspension mixed with hydro.
I really like comfort, but is it expensive and hard to work with? I always fix my own cars, and I don´t want a nightmare in my garage. Anyone here who know how it is to work on this?
All parts are available if you know where to look. They are not hard to work on or fix once you understand how the hydraulic system works and there are lots of people out there who understand it you can get information from. Do your research first, find a forum that caters to the XM to get you started and you will be fine. I have had mine 13 years and apart from a flat battery and a fuel pump relay it has not let me down, just converted it to a PRV6 engine from a 2.0i too, still going well. Bear in mind though that the youngest of these cars are 18 years old and the oldest is 29 so regular maintenance will be required to some degree.
TA, DS, CX, XM, C6 are applied art. No manufacturer can match them. Thanks for proper XM review.

About the steering... That Diravi seems to not be working properly, usually they are super quick and precise, plus it should be able to get back to the center position without help even with the car stopped. Probably the center sphere of the suspension (which operates the steering) is going bad.
Hi,

Great vid ....realistic, wonderful car
Dan Katz hi Dan,
That would be awesome to do.
Maintenance?most of it DIY.
frederik boersma hi,
And thanks form your comments what do you drive now and what would you like to drive?
Thanks chillmax,
I am a big fan of large Citroëns and OMG yes I agree with you on the cx I would love a pallas with Louvre rear window in dark red and black leather.
Chillmax are you local would love to see the safari maybe some pictures
My Cx is in Kent, you can see what she looked like late last year near the top of My Videos, she's moved on a lot since then, but it's really painful restoring a classic car and a relatively tricky one at that. Worked on her for 6 hours today and I'm not sure what we did ;-)
Hahaha yes it is a Labor of love and never seems finished

Brilliant review and have to agree with you about the XM.
I have a C5 V6 which ive spent quite some time working at to get back on the road but these big french barges are amazing things to waft about in. The XM V6 is getting harder to find but i ended up finding a 605 with the same engine and box as this XM.
605 ain't the same mate, doesn't matter of the engine and g-box

It would still do for spares haha
For many parts will do the same sure.
That's my heaven and hell at the same time but deffo HEAVEN a bit.
My dad has one in an exclusive version with the manual gearbox 😛
And now he's swapping the engine with the 24v version 🤪
Long time Citroënista here. Currently driving a BX GTI, while the wife drives a C5. Yes, I bleed green.
Thanks for the video. Only bit where I disagree with you is the brake pedal. I love the brake action in my BX, anyway.
I'm trying to convince a mate to buy an XM just like the one in your video. Posting this video on his facebook was golden, now he's tearing his hair out while his heart battles his brain :D
Hi Zwerker tell your mate to go for it.

Big French cars bought with the heart although in my dad's case (Renault 25 V6 )because his brother-in-law was a Renault dealer (great car)
I owned one of those XM 24V 3.0, racing green all black leather. It cost me IR£ 48,000 in 1993 (€60,000.00) in 1993. Had great fun with it but it packed up with only 52,000 miles on the clock
Amazing design and a great drive.
Next a Citroën c6?
Nice analysis!
That's a wonderful video. I came, saw and subbed ;)
I agree fully with the last point. Nowadays everything just has to function nowadays, everything has to be connected. No uniqueness anymore. I have a C5, I sometimes notice that I just drive a detour before or after work, just to drive. Such cars really do feel special and driving them feels so too.
Alexander Kunz thanks it's great to see people that look at you driving something different as if you are mad
Chris Warburton I have the same issue now the steering doodah thingy mebob
is broken and is going to cost gazillions to fix pff
gotta be done though.
All best

But the worst of all is renault
Well that is the case with every car and make. But I can totally agree with you with Renault. And now days Nissan is half Renault so its the same S**t in different package. My father was a mechanic and he used to say that the only decent Renault can be found on a shelf of a liquor store.

Hi,
Must say I did not notice any difference in sport mode tbh.
As for the adaptive side I didn't think so but am not sure.
No. All series 1 Xm used the old ZF 4HP18 Mechical autobox. It wasn't untill 1996 when the v6 was replaced with the newer V6 es 24v V6 engine that they used the Zf4hp20 box which was meant to be an adaptive box..
@@Mr80sliveon Okay. Thanks for that.
Great video. It does however have automatic leveling. That's how it works so it's not an option.
not agree with everything (we had 3 XM)
- at higher speeds the steering and suspension get quite tight and it takes turns better than any limosine, its adaptive (electronically) => nothing like speeding a curvy road steering without almost toughing the wheel and not having to turn it more than some cm (if only the seats / sofas had more side support) - did many hundred kilometers down the croatian costs at night driving it hard all the time in the 90ies
Wolfgang Brugger good car and good memories

Hi Mihai Bidian thanks
2 that gearbox omg
3 weight.
And thanks for the offer you sound like a car guy.
What other interesting cars have you owned or are still on your probably list.
Where are you based.

Doesn't the auto box have a sport mode ? Probably needs new fluid and resetting, it should be fairly responsive in sport mode, or so I've heard.

On the way to F1 I had my foot down and thought I was going straight one at an island and my mate said " we are going right " so I hit sport button and lowered suspension to the deck .......it stuck like glue and howled the tyres ......they do handle and 2.1 diesel is good on fuel ...... reliably oh yes lol suspension , Speedo , indicators , seat , etc ....miss it
Also raced a mates mx5 around Tamworth egg islands and nothing in it ......both loons lol

Hi,
Well I think the problem with cats like these is that at one stage they become so cheap and unwanted that the next ain't going to repair them with genuine or if any parts.
So once you are on a slope of poor maintenance it is going to cost shed loads to keep them good.
Real talk, subbed!
tell me i'm wrong ...you didnt even mention the fact, that the HP is controlled (and adapted !) by a computer !? aka "hydractive" !!?? instead of insisting on the "quirkyness"... :-(

Hey truth seeker,
True that this is a very comfortable and way more advanced setup than coils.

I really like comfort, but is it expensive and hard to work with? I always fix my own cars, and I don´t want a nightmare in my garage. Anyone here who know how it is to work on this?
Robert Gullberg well it depends on how easy you can get parts really
All parts are available if you know where to look. They are not hard to work on or fix once you understand how the hydraulic system works and there are lots of people out there who understand it you can get information from. Do your research first, find a forum that caters to the XM to get you started and you will be fine.
I have had mine 13 years and apart from a flat battery and a fuel pump relay it has not let me down, just converted it to a PRV6 engine from a 2.0i too, still going well.
Bear in mind though that the youngest of these cars are 18 years old and the oldest is 29 so regular maintenance will be required to some degree.
