Australia’s live music scene seems to be struggling a little lately, but one of its most formidable bands continues to deliver festival-ready rock anthems. For those that have never heard of them, Hockey Dad is an surf rock band from Windang, New South Wales. To rebuild is unmistakably Hockey Dad, but Zach Stephenson and Billy Fleming also embrace exciting new sounds in these songs. The Rebuild Repeat album for 2024, builds upon a decade of momentum and relentless touring to present the most ideal version of themselves. Album opener and single “Base Camp” is a gleeful kick-in-the-teeth that hinges around its infectious main riff and the singer Zach’s self-aware “da da da’s” that lead to a victorious singalong chorus. The lead single “Still Have Room,” can be interpreted as about past friends who drift into different lives moving forward in your life through different phases, but still having that connection and special place in your heart for people you grow apart from. Acknowledging their impact on your life for good or bad and keeping those memories and lessons with you. This track and “Safety Pin” are powered by more slinky guitars and open-bottom chords not quite heard on their past singles; the backing vocals on the second chorus of “Safety Pin” are some the best moments on the record. Fans of Hockey Dad’s previous work will still feel at home, although many of Rebuild Repeat’s songs were first written and established within 10-minute “lock yourself in a room and just bloody do it” sessions on acoustic guitar with a return to basics approach . Rebuild Repeat as a title kind of describes the process of making a new record as a band,” Stephenson shares. “You only have yourselves as raw materials. You knock down what you had from the past, re-design, rebuild it and repeat. Hopefully you learn some structural integrity tips along your way.” Hockey Dad are indeed a global standard for modern surf/skate rock with an indie pop twist. It exemplifies Hockey Dad’s knack for catchy melodies and infectious hooks, drawing listeners into their world of sun-soaked riffs and irresistible charm. Through a more introspective lens, Rebuild Repeat explores themes of resilience, growth, and the everyday struggles of modern life; a no-skips breakthrough LP that somehow invokes to many new listeners a breath of fresh air.
