- Paul Tamberino (Senior Director, Competition for MLS) trains Jason Saghini to become a referee. In phase two, Jason sits down to take the written exam.
Referee Week continues at MLSsoccer.com.

Also, that is the introductory referee exam which is significantly easier than what a referee would be taking if they were officiating any high level matches.
and ths 'goal' (the first video) is correctly ruled out, but actually for the wrong offence, it is actually offside ( the keeper is our and there are two attackers closer to the goal line than the second last defender) and one of them is in front of the defender on the line and therefore interfering with an opponent
Hi Paul, is the strike at 4.14 used in your new training material? Makes an interesting talking point for new interpretations of the laws
The problem with the written tests is that it tests your knowledge of unlikely chances on some of the questions and tries to trick you with wording on other parts. It does little to show how well someone would do in an actual game. The part at the end with seeing different situations and making judgements is a better tool in my opinion that the test
Thats awesome. Even this guy likes to review plays with Spanish commentators. He knows its the best way to watch Futbol !!!
On the video question, there were two players in an offside position who may have been blocking their last opponent's view, making it impossible for him to make the movement to stop the ball. Could they not have been flagged for offside?
At 5:30 that is clear handling of the ball. He lifts his elbow while he slides to stop the ball. Clear penalty. Don't focus on the 4 times he handles it after, just the first contact
This Jason guy looks like Bobby Roode
You don't need to touch the ball to be caught offside. When there is an opponent near, every move distracts them, even if you try to avoid the ball. So it is an offside, no matter what. The opponent won't judge why you moved, they will just be distracted by your movement.
Also, the player with the black suit, comes from behind his opponent and fails to react fast, because he doesn't see the ball until the very last milliseconds.
nice series, mls
I was about to post that. Good catch!
Great vid but the music is incredibly loud and distracting!
thanks for making these videos men it helped me so much, ima be ref in august :D
LOL @ the first play they watch on DVD! This is NOT a goal! It is an offside violation, since the last player with the white suit, is closer to the goal than the second-to-last defender(in this case, the goalkeeper) and he is blocking the line of sight of the last defender who could have kicked the ball away!
So, it's not a goal, it's an offside violation!
So you did! Well done :P
Justin, reread the laws of the game man! It says it must be deliberate...
He didn't touch the ball. That's not offside, he even clearly gets out of the way to avoid touching the ball. He hasn't blocked the defender's line of sight either as at 3:59 you can see the defender is watching the ball from the other side of the white player and then moves to stop it, but misses.
Not offside.
spitting is NOT violent conduct, it is a separate offence, funnily enough, called 'spitting'
wrexhamseadogs I'm pretty sure that spitting is a sub offence of violent conduct
The words deliberate does not apply. That is crazy at that level they are using these terms
hey i want to ref!
then read the FIFA interpretations of what deliberate is.
He took the Grade 8 test, lol
man he is a better ref than the professionals thats sad
check below, i also spotted that one first ;)
do u even ref?
Amazing how little the people who abuse referees know. Yellow card / drop ball for spits at? Common sense should prevail
