rubber soul has been my favorite since my birthday in 1965 when I rode my bike to the neighborhood store and bought it for five bucks with my birthday money. it melted my twelve-year-old brain.

I’m 31 and I’ve only started listening properly to the Beatles albums after watching the “Get Back” . It’s genuinely blowing my mind how good they are, I’ve become obsessed so quickly. How you described listening to Revolver as a kid reminds me of the feeling - I can’t believe music can be this good.
    Great video 👍

Agree about Beatles for Sale - very underrated. Especially on mono. Sometimes us old folks forget and take them for granted but you have to look at each album in the context of other releases at the time - they were SO ahead of everyone else. It’s also very good to see young people appreciating them.

    • @tomrogerlilleby2890

I guess I'm also one of those "old folks" - as I was about 8 years old when The Beatles went worldwide
with "She Loves You" in 1963.
I too have come to have higher thoughts about the "Beatles For Sale" album as time has passed.
For some reason I used to regard it as one of their weakest albums - which is hard to understand now.
But I think it was because they continued the tradition of making cover versions of other people's songs.
Chuck Berry's "Rock and Roll Music" is OK and blends in with their own songs -
but "Mr. Moonlight" speaks to another much older generation.
By this time The Beatles should have replaced their old pre-fame reportuar with strictly their own songs.
Singles like : "From Me To You" - "Thank You Girl" - "She Loves You" - "I'll Get You" - "I Want To Hold Your Hand" -
"This Boy" - "I Call Your Name" - "I Feel Fine" etc. would have worked even better than songs like :
"Kansas City/Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey" - "Honey Don't" - "Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby."
Buddy Holly's "Words of Love" can pass as a "Beatle song" as its not that much different than their own stuff.
The "Help" album is also weakened by them including William's "Dizzy Miss Lizzy."
Their own "I'm Down" - the B-side of the "Help" single - would have been better.
Their own songs on "Beatles For Sale" : "No Reply" - "I'm a Loser" - "Baby's In Black" - "I'll Follow the Sun" -
"Eight Days a Week" - "Every Little Thing" - "I Don't Want To Spoil the Party" and "What You're Doing"
each holds the same high standard as the rest of their songs from that period.

Totally agree about Sgt Pepper being number 6. I know it's almost blasphemous to not put Sgt Pepper in the top 3 but, for me, it's always been overrated. It's a great album for sure and, for most bands, it would be their magnus opus. But I think the Beatles have several better albums.

After not having listened to it in a while, I found every song a winner. What's truly amazing is how difficult it becomes to rank their albums because most of them are just so incredible.

Spend a few hours and listen to the albums in chronological order. It’s really quite beyond belief how the music developed over what was essentially a 6 year recording career (1963-1969) interrupted by constant touring and filming until 1966. And the albums omit a considerable amount of great singles - add those in and the story is even more amazing.

Notes on "Let It Be": The fact that "Don't Let Me Down" was not going to be included was foreshadowed by its inclusion in the U.S. "Hey Jude" album early in 1970. Whether that came about because Phil Spector had indicated that he wasn't planning to include it in LIB, or more "the reverse" - that someone, likely Allen Klein, decided to include it in "Hey Jude", and Phil Spector was stuck with that decision - I don't know. "Across the Universe" did not originate as part of the LIB album sessions of January 1969 (when the plan was for the album to be called "Get Back"); rather, it was recorded in early-ish 1968 in the sessions that produced "Lady Madonna", "The Inner Light" and "Hey Bulldog". Its inclusion in LIB may have been to make up for the loss of DLMD, and/or just to do SOMETHING with it on general release in what was understood at that point to be the final Beatles album. LIB's song count, BTW, follows the "American plan" of essentially 11 songs on an LP, with 6 on side 1 (actually 7 because 2 "tidbits" count as 1), and 5 on side 2, most likely attributable to the release falling under the control of the U.S.-based Klein camp. The U.S. release of the LP was issued by United Artists records, as part of the original "3 movie deal" the Beatles were under contract for since 1964. UA let the album go out of print by the mid-1970s, and it was not until Capitol bought UA records in the LATE 70s that the LP resurfaced in the U.S.

Brian, good on you for rating Beatles For Sale so highly! Such an underrated album. Such an original album too with a heavy accent on country/rockabilly. Their lyrics really stepped up here from the formula of the 1st three LPs. Many outstanding songs: I Don't Want To Spoil The Party, No Reply, Eight Days A Week, What You're Doing etc. Tiger.

Beatles for Sale came out just as I was learning to play guitar. It became my goal to be able to credibly play all the guitar parts on those songs. I didn't reach it for a long time. It will always have a dear place in my heart.
Your top three are right on, to me. Rubber Soul is right up there, Abby Road next and, at number one, Revolver, definitely.
Just an aside about Abbey Road. The day it was released and was first playing on the radio I hadn't heard it yet. I was in a car, in the back seat with four of my close friends. The front passenger was turning the tuning dial on the radio and he stopped on a channel just as the guitar trio on the second side was playing. There were no voices to give away who it was. We listened and were blown away. I was just shocked at how good it was. I said, "I don't know who these guys are, but they are better than the Beatles. They're the best band I ever heard." Then Paul's voice came on, "and in the end..." and, well, you know.

.. ranking Beatles albums is a difficult task because so much of music is amazing! I grew up on the "American" albums so there is no ranking for "Yesterday & Today", "Beatles '65", "Beatles 2nd Album" or "Beatles VI".My order would be different though I do agree with the lowest and the highest. "Rubber Soul" has always been my #1 in either the "American" or "British" configuration. I appreciated your comments, especially your higher ranking of "Beatles for Sale"....a precursor to Rubber Soul in a way. - thanks- KD

Interesting list, Brian. There's no way I would even attempt to rank them, nor could I rank my favorite songs. The Beatles are in a class by themselves. IMO, (even though I love it)
the most overrated album would be "The White Album." If I were in a band, I would be proud to have released the album, but it's below The Beatles' impeccable standards.

To me, many critics under-estimated the Beatles impact/influence on the late 60's music scene. I feel this album you accurately describe as the most non-Beatle was intentional. It was so "in your face", we can write/play ANYTHING and it will sound good. The Beatles were/are the Micha
el Jordan of music. (YOU CAN'T GUARD ME, MJ) (YOU CAN'T OUTCREATE ME, THE BEATLES).

Tony Brice - Regarding "The White Album" :
I think their producer, George Martin, suggested to them to release it as a regular two-sided album.
I believe that "The White Album" would have earned more credibility and perhaps stood an even better chance
to be regarded as their absolute greatest album, had they followed his advice.
What do you think of this line up ?
      1 "Back In the U.S.S.R."
      2 "Dear Prudence"
3 "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"
4 "Happiness Is a Warm Gun"
      5 "Martha My Dear"
      6 "I'm So Tired"
      7 "Blackbird"
      8 "I Will"
      9 "Julia"
      10 "Birthday"
      11 "Mother Nature's Son"
      12 "Sexy Sadie"
      13 "Long, Long, Long"
(The singles "Hey Jude" and "Revolution (single version)" should also be added to this album.)
      I have left out :
      "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da"
      "Wild Honey Pie"
"The C. Story of Bungalow Bill"
      "Piggies"
      "Rocky Racoon"
      "Don't Pass Me By"
"Why Don't We Do It In the Road"
      "Yer Blues"
      "Everybody's G. S. T. H. E. Me and My Monkey"
      "Helter Skelter"
      "Revolution 1"
      "Honey Pie"

#1...MEET THE BEATLES! In England the Beatles had already released two albums, Please Please Me and With The Beatles and yet, NO ONE IN THE U.S. KNEW WHO THEY WERE. Brian told John and Paul that unless they made it in the U.S....they never really made it (ask Cliff Richard). The cover (I know it was used in Brit lp, but not with the shadows), is one of the iconic covers of all time. The album also included I Want To Hold Your Hand, the most iconic record of all time. Without Meet The Beatles and I Want To Hold Your Hand...there are no Beatles.

You can't be serious, as McEnroe would say. I want to have a tantrum. The White Album should not be changed. 'Rev. No.9' adds so much to the diversity of an already diverse album. Its the track that takes the scope of their musicality and the breadth of whats possible, the evidence of extreme artistic experimentation and makes the statement ''there are only the limits you put on oneself.'' ''No limits''. ''Good Night"" is a work of genius in and of itself and to put it as the last track is exhalted. It tells you its the end of the album, adventure and frames it as if it was a kids book

Great ranking. Surprised by Beatles for Sale being so high up, but I see your point. I was curious as to what version of Rubber Soul you prefer, the US or UK? For me, I listen to the US almost exclusively. It has a better overall vibe, pacing, and got rid of the weaker tracks (besides Nowhere Man, of course) to replace them with stronger tracks.

    • @BrianBringelson

I prefer the UK, but I have a fondness for the US version as well. Especially since it's the version my Dad had, and he would (and still does) tell me how much better the US was to the UK. In addition Brian Wilson was majorly influenced by the US version, so it certainly has its place. Thanks for the great comment.

Born 1961. Listened to and had each UK LP as it came out including lastly the 'Hey Jude' 'LP' (a great selection of mostly non Album songs). My listen too most order!
*(1) 'Sgt Peppers', (2) 'Rubber Soul', (3) 'The White Album', (4) 'Magical Mystery Tour' (5) 'With the Beatles', (6) 'Revolver', (7) 'Help' (8) 'Please Please Me' (9) 'Beatles For Sale', (10) 'A Hard Day's Night', (11) 'Hey Jude', (12) 'Abbey Road', (13) 'Let it Be', (14) 'Yellow Submarine'.*
Many of my favorite 111 SPOTIFY list ( *'Rain', 'Paperback Writer'* ) are NOT LP ones and why I like the 'Hey Jude' LP! with *'Don't Let me down!'* if NOT the song itself!

Its is so difficult to choose which order to put then in. I have recently been playing the white album after many years overlooking it and I now realise what a fantastic album it is.Yellow Submarine usually ranks low in the ratings because of the instrumental side 2 but the quality of the Beatles songs on side 1 are fantastic. I think I agree with your ratings except I would rate With the Beatles a little higher. Its so hard to choose though.

Fun video mate! Beatles for Sale is getting a lot of play from me these days. Revolver is my no. 1 as well. I go back and forth between the stereo (1st pressing from Japan-very good), and the mono (also from Japan). I haven’t heard MMT in mono yet. Must be quite a different ball of wax.

Amazing video! Great explanations of your choices. Liked and subscribed. Revolver, like all their albums, is aces. I'm currently going through all The Beatles albums and giving them a "critical" listen. I just finished Magical Mystery Tour. I'll probably start the white album today. I can't rank the albums yet obviously; however, I don't think I'll put Revolver as high as you have. I think Pepper is my favorite so far and Rubber Soul gets the nod ahead of Revolver. I still have the white album, Yellow Submarine, Abbey Road and Let it Be left to listen to. As it stands now, it's in the three spot and I don't see it falling below 5/6. I know there is no way Yellow Submarine tops Revolver :D Again, great video and I hope you will watch mine if I put one up?!

Here are mine - pretty much the same for the past ten years going from #5 down: #5 Revolver, #4 Abbey Road, #3 Pepper, #2 Rubber Soul, #1 The Beatles' White Album. We all have our tastes. John named the White Album as his favorite and Paul - Sgt Pepper. Brian Wilson went with Rubber Soul. Thinking that those three legends know a thing or two about Beatle music.

I don’t agree. Sgt. Pepper’s to me was transformative and must be placed at the top of the list for three reasons. From a concept standpoint (even though it was flawed) it was a breakthrough. It elevated “Pop” music to another level, unlike their two previous masterpieces Rubber Soul and Revolver. What stands out the most to me however is the craftsmanship they exhibited to a level unsurpassed by any other album. They took the most time in producing the album and it shows. It is their ultimate piece of work for those reasons. Hey Mozart is my favorite classical composer for the quality and preponderance of his work and beautiful uplifting melodies, but Beethoven is ranked a sliver higher because of his transformative genius.

I LOVE Beatles For Sale!! Why do people dislike it? Mum only had 3 Beatles albums, Beatles For Sale, With The Beatles and Sgt Pepper. She had tons if singles and EPs as well, so I grew up on the early Beatles stuff.
I think I probably got into BFS through the Beatles cartoon which must have been on tv when I was 3 in 1980. No Reply, Baby's In Black, I'm A Loser, I Don't Want To Spoil The Party, I'll Follow The Sun, What You're Doing and of course Eight Days A Week. I played those songs all the time when I was 3-6. Didn't get into Sgt Pepper until I was about 10, when the 20th anniversary album was released in 1987. I wanted it because we got a limited edition red vinyl I thought was so cool at the time. Mum had a first press Aus copy with the UK cover, inner and cutouts. The Aus mono was pretty much identical to the UK version because it used the same -1/-1 stamper, much like the rest of the albums. Man I wish i still had it.
A Hard Day's Night is my favourite early album, possibly edging out BFS because it is all originals. Mum had the blue AHDN EP (and other singles from the album) and it was one of my favourites. If I Fell, And I Love Her, AHDN, I Should Have Known Better, Can't Buy Me Love, Anytime At All, I'll Cry Instead...... such a perfect album.
I recently bought the entire collection of mono albums (plus AR and LIB) from 2014 and cannot stop listening to them. With The Beatles never much interested me like BFS did. But I did love the All My Loving EP. That along with It Won't Be Long are my favourites. It still astounds me that possibly the two biggest singles of the 60's were not on an album! I never realised that. Again, mum had all the singles and only 3 albums so I never knew. I Want To Hold Your Hand and Hey Jude/Revolution have to be the 2 biggest singles of the decade. Hey Jude was no.1 here for 12 weeks I think, it was only ABBA's bloody godawful Fernando that beat it as the longest no.1 streak with 14 weeks. I was so disappointed when I heard Revolution 1 on The Beatles! I love that song. I remember kind of discovering it in mum's singles when the "reebok controversy" hit. I can't get enough of these records at the moment though! AHDN, BFS, Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt Pepper and Abbey Road are on constant rotation on my turntable. I bought back up copies!
Still waiting for momo Magical Mystery Tour, but love those songs and have played them alot off the blue album. Of course I also bought the red/blue/mono masters records. I plan to make a mono version of red/blue because I dislike the stereo versions. Especially those "vocals in one channel, instruments in another" songs!
I had bought a stereo AHDN because the mono is hard to get and over priced on shitbay. I bought mono PPM, AHDN, HELP!, Sgt Pepper (have the double 50th at the moment) and MMT off discoggs. Bugger me if i didn't walk into a JB Hi-Fi last Saturday and find mono AHDN, HELP! and PPM in the Beatles section! I of course had to buy them so I guess the other copies will stay sealed.

I guess everybody has their own list, a bit different from everyone else. The ones hit is another ones shit and vise versa. That - in my opinion - is actually a part of what makes Beatles so great: there’s something for everybody.
Here’s my list (best at top):

    1. Please Please Me
(Highlighted tracks: “I Saw Her Standing There”, “Anna”, “Please Please Me”, “Do You Want To Know A Secret”, “There’s A Place”, “Twist And Shout”)
(Moderately remarkable: “Misery”, “Boys”, “Ask Me Why”, “Baby It’s You”, “A Taste Of Honey”)
    (Weakest track: “Chains”)
    2. Sgt. Pepper
(Highlighted tracks: “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds”, “She’s Leaving Home”, “For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite”, “When I’m 64”, “A Day In The Life”)
(Moderately remarkable: “A Little Help From My Friends”, “Getting Better”, “Fixing A Hole”, “Within You, Without You”)
    (Weakest track: “Good Morning”)
    3. Rubber Soul
(Highlighted tracks: “Norwegian Wood”, “Nowhere Man”, “Michelle”, “Girl”, “In My Life”)
(Moderately remarkable: “Drive My Car”, “You Wont See Me”, “The Word”)
    (Weakest track: “What Goes On”)
    4. With The Beatles
(Highlighted tracks: “It Won’t Be Long”, “All I Gotta Do”, “All My Loving”, “You Really Gotta Gold On Me”, “Not A Second Time”)
(Moderately remarkable: “Till There Was You”, “Please Mr. Postman”, “Devil In Her Heart”)
    (Weakest track: “Little Child”)
    5. Revolver
(Highlighted tracks: “Eleanor Rigby”, “I’m Only Sleeping”, “Here There And Everywhere”, “For No One”, “Tomorrow Never Knows”)
(Moderately remarkable: “Taxman”, “Dr. Robert”, “Got To Get You Into My Life”)
    (Weakest track: “Love You To”)
    6. A Hard Days Night
(Highlighted tracks: “A Hard Days Night”, “I’m Happy Just To Dance With You”, “And I Love Her”, “Can’t Buy Me Love”)
(Moderately remarkable: “I Should Have Known Better”, “Tell Me Why”, “Things We Said Today”)
(Weakest track: “When I Get Home”)
    7. Help
(Highlighted tracks: “Help”, “The Night Before”, “I’ve Just Seen A Face”, “Yesterday”)
(Moderately remarkable: “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away”, “Ticket To Ride”, “It’s Only Love”)
(Weakest track: “You Like Me Too Much”)
    8. Magical Mystery Tour
(Highlighted tracks: “Your Mother Should Know”, “I Am The Walrus”, “Strawberry Fields Forever”, “Penny Lane)
(Moderately remarkable: “The Fool On The Hill”, “Hello Goodbye”, “All You Need Is Love”)
    (Weakest track: “Flying”)
    9. Abbey Road
(Highlighted tracks: “Oh Darling”, “Here Comes The Sun”, “Because”)
(Moderately remarkable: “Maxwell Silver Hammer”, “Octopusses Gaden”, “You Never Give Me Your Money”)
    (Weakest track: “Mean Mr. Mustard”)
    10. For Sale
(Highlighted tracks: “Baby’s In Black”, “I’ll Follow The Sun”, “Eight Days A Week”)
(Moderately remarkable: “Rock and Roll Music”, “Words Of Love”, “What You’re Doing”)
(Weakest track: “I Don’t Want To Spoil The Party”)
    11. White Album
(Highlighted tracks: “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”, “I Will”, “Sexy Sadie”)
(Moderately remarkable: “Back In USSR”, “Blackbird”, “Birthday”)
    (Weakest track: “Wild Honey Pie”)
    12. Let It Be
(Highlighted tracks: “Across The Universe”, “Let It Be”)
(Moderately remarkable: “Two Of Us”, “The Long And Winding Road, “For You Blue”)
    (Weakest track: “Dig It”)
    - - -
    13. Yellow Submarine ( - Note: I don’t count this as a real Beatles-album)
I would not be able to create a list of absolute favorite Beatles songs. There are too many. And because of the diversity in The Beatles songbook, I think that many of them can’t be compared and put in an order. “All My Loving” is to me an example of a perfect pop song, pure pop at its best. But does that place it over or under a highly experimental and unconventional track such as “I Am The Walrus”, which is a completely different kind of a musical experience? You can’t really say. It’s comparing what can’t be compared!
But here’s a little converted list (worst at top) of what I consider Beatles’ weakest output, but only containing regular songs, without snippets such as “Dig It”, “Wild Honey Pie” and “Mean Mr. Mustard”. Following that rule my “hate” (read: less loved) list will be:
    1. Everybody’s Got Something To Hide Except For Me And My Monkey.
    2. Long Long Long
    3. I Me MIne
    4. Dig A Pony
    5. Dear Prudence
    6. Only A Northern Song
    7. Savoy Truffle
    8. I Don’t Want To Spoil The Party
    9. When I Get Home
    10. Love You To

Yes, but the White Album is the ultimate album for the 21st century - where you can simply cherry-pick your favorite 18 (or so) tracks and assemble a prefect snapshot of the Beatles in 1968. Its still their most adventurous and modern sounding album. Stuff like "Dear Prudence", "Long, Long, Long" and "Cry Baby Cry" sound like what indie bands are doing now. Radiohead ripped off "Sexy Sadie" obviously (listen to chords in "Karma Police" folks). Thom Yorke admits White Album is one of his big influences, The Beatles harness distortion in a modern compressed way on "Helter Skelter", "Birthday" and "Happiness is Warm Gun." They help usher in the singer/songwriter movement with acoustic pieces like "Julia", "Blackbird" and "Mother Natures Son." Its ALL there. And, heck, "Revolution #9" is early sampling; I now like it - it has its own rhythmic logic. And it ends with a Lullaby ("Goodnight") by "uncle" Ringo. It makes sense. "Back in The USSR", "Savoy Truffle" and "Glass Onion" simply Rock - period . And what's really fun - NO one can agree on what 18 tracks to choose. If you do meet someone who picks the same - you should marry them.
The only surprise on your list is "Beatles for Sale" - but I do like the beautiful guitar work on their Buddy Holly cover "Words of Love." I just prefer the acid Beatles from 1966-1968.
But, in the end, there are valid arguments for any of the big five Beatle albums to be on top. I won't argue too much with anyone's choice. Its all personal and they're all brilliant in many ways. I know I can't live without the last 4 songs on side 1 of "Sgt Pepper" ("GettingBetter", "Fixing a Hole", "She's Leaving Home", "Mr. Kite") either. They define me almost. And "You Never Give Me Your Money" on Abbey Road NEVER gets old.

Great video! Very similar choices as me. There are two possible reasons why 'Don't let Me Down' was not included on the 'Let It Be' album; 1; The studio version had already been released as the B side to 'Get Back'. 2; There's a sound fault on the live rooftop version, plus John goofs his lyrics. It would have been a tricky old fix back in 1970 (not impossible though). This was patched up on the 'Naked' release.

Hey Brian. I'm working on a similar rankings video at the moment so was curious to see how you did it. Enjoyed it! We have several cross-overs and several differences. I really love What You're Doing also. Cheers, James

I love this Ranking! Especially that Revolver is so high placed. It really doesnt get all the credits it deserve because of Sgt.Peppers. I always preferred Revolver.
