Back in the 70's, as students, my weekly grocery budget for two people was $10. We ate a lot of stuffed peppers and pork steak in mushroom sauce. Now I'm a single senior and try to stay at $100/month. I shop only the loss leaders. So far this month I'm at $64 with a freezer full of chicken breasts and ground beef. Will spend money for fresh vegetables, so should get up to the $100 by the end of the month. I look at it like a game and I want to win ;o)

Kraft blue box Mac and cheese was $0.11 per box. We lived on that, early 70s. Spent about 11-14 dollars per week!

Yes! I like looking at it like a game too. I try to stay as close to $1/lb or less for all produce, it's gotten impossible for some items, but it's still possible if you watch ads and don't always shop the same stores and the same days, you can run into a surprise deal.

I'd rather buy something of good quality and then a little less than something in bulk of lesser quality but cheaper. And eating less is better for you, too. We consume way too much food in a day.

We have been Aldi shoppers for about 35 years! And wow, the improvements they have made over the years are amazing. It's a plus when we can get some of their meat marked down to 50% off. It also saves us so much time, because the store footprint is smaller and there aren't as many choices to make. Love Aldi!

When it comes to shopping experience, Aldi and Wal-Mart do not even compare. In my area, Aldis are much smaller and one can shop quickly and get in and out. My Wal-Mart Superstore is huge and I wander just shopping for 20 items. My time is worth money too. For me it’s Aldi hands down.

Last year before my surgery, I really didn't have the stamina to walk about a big store to shop. So I rarely went in a Wal-Mart etc. Now that I'm healthier, I still only shop there infrequently when I need to stock up on non food items I can't buy from a smaller store in my rural area.

Good morning! Really appreciate you for speaking out about the importance of supporting locally owned stores. I have chosen not to enter a Walmart for about two decades now and am here to say it is entirely possible to live without Walmart. We live rural, but Walmart is only about 10 miles from here. It is possible with careful shopping to stay within budget and shop local!

Good for you! I'm the same way with Amazon. If I can't get something locally, I really don't need it. For home repair projects, we always start at our small neighborhood hardware. I want them to stay in business for years to come. They are so knowledgeable and helpful and will always talk through a project to make sure you have the tools and supplies you need.

There have been a lot of consumer complaints in my area about staples and own brands all having magically increased in the last year to exactly the same price in almost all main grocery shops. Many people complained and finally the price watch agency came in, it is one thing not to forget that as a consumer you have rights and one is the right to complaint if things appear "fishy".

Single household here. I budget $90 a week for food, household, & hygiene items, though I rarely spend that much because I have such a well stocked freezer and pantry. Thinking I could cut it down a little and add that to savings. I tend to just shop the loss leaders from each store. We have Aldi, Price Chopper, Hannaford, Grand Union, Shop Rite and Price Rite within 15 miles of my home. Also Dollar General and Dollar Tree.

I am very behind on videos, because I just found your channel last week! Loving learning from you; you remind me so much of my lovely mom. I shop mostly at Walmart and King Soopers (our local Kroger store here in Denver). We like to splurge a couple times a year at Trader Joes, and we also make an occasional trip to Costco or Sam's Club for bulk household items like diapers, wipes, laundry detergent, toilet paper, etc. Our budget is $200/week for a family of 6 (2 adults and 4 kids aged 10, 8, 5, 2) and we cook 3 meals a day from scratch at home. We homeschool our children so that includes a nice, hearty lunch. We include household products in our budget. Any money I save out of our grocery budget I save toward bulk meat purchases from a local rancher. Love the videos and all the great tips you share!

We have a shop called Argus Farm Stop that has locally grown food that comes from local farmers. I live in Ann Arbor, Michigan. We are also having a cool summer here which I love. I shop at a store called Dollar Star. They bring in all kinds of random closeout items from Target, Whole Foods, Dollar General and even a local farmer's market. That's usually my first stop because the prices are fantastic. If I still need other grocery items I go to Aldi, Walmart, Ideal Food Basket and Publix. If I could find more "mom & pop" stores in my area I WOULD support them, but where I am, near Fort Lauderdale, it's all SO commercial. Every store I just mentioned is within a mile of my home.

I have an ice cream maker and really enjoy making homemade ice cream from time to time. I give it as gifts too and people love it. Today I went to a farm on my way home from my mom and dads and got some meats and veggies. I like supporting them because they grow and raise their own veggies/fruits/animals. The cost is def more than a supermarket but I know at least how the meat was raised and butchered and the veggies/fruits are not jacked w/ pesticides. It’s totally worth it. I do also go to the supermarket for stuff and where I live (New England) Market Basket is a regional chain and they have the best prices anywhere. I love going there to find quality items for less.

I have an Aldi, Super Wal-Mart and Giant grocery store within 5 minutes. Also a BJs but I don't buy for an army so don't shop there. We are a household of 3 adults. My food budget including toiletries, cleaning supplies and catfood/litter is 500 a month. I usually come in under. I recently bought a food saver at an estate sale with dozens of bags and 2 rolls of plastic for 50 bucks! It looked brand new in the box. I save a lot now by never throwing food away.

I make a list after looking at all the grocery store ads for the week, then cherry pick the sale items/loss leaders. I go between Aldi, Price Chopper, Wal-Mart, Wegmans then a small local store named Nichols that has excellent sales. I wish we had an Amish store close (nearest one is a 50 minute drive) but we don’t. I find that food is too expensive to limit yourself at one store.

I do my main shopping at Aldi. I love how easy it is to get in and out. During the pandemic, it was just great knowing that you were in a small store where you didn’t have to stay very long. I only shop at Kroger or Meijer ever every two or three weeks for things I can’t get at Aldi. And then I tend to buy multiples of each item, like my distilled water for my CPAP, Smart Balance spread, etc.
I try not to set foot in a Walmart! 🤣

    Hi Emmy and Paul
We are a retired couple we shop Aldi, Walmart, Price Chopper, BJ’s. Our grocery bill varies. I do canning, dehydrating and have three freezers. Depending on sales of meats and vegetables we might only need milk, eggs, coffee, flour, (as I make my own bread), fruit etc. Our grocery’s ranges from as little as $100 to 300 a month. We keep the freezers full and rotate the canning and freezer foods. By doing this most months of the year we keep it around $100.

Hi Emmy and Paul. Ice cream looked amazing 😊. Here in Scotland I shop at Aldi and Tesco. I always compare prices in each store online before I head out so I know which is cheaper that day. The only problem I find with Aldi is that you can buy an item you love for a few weeks and then you can't get it anymore. My budget for the month is £200 for 2 and a dog. I used to be under every month but it's getting much tougher with the price of staples going up. We used to buy Tescp cheese at £1.79 for 400g and now it's £2.85 for 400g 😮.

Hi Emmy, the home made ice cream looks amazing but when I priced out the ingredients in the past and it is generally twice the price of a container of a decent ice cream on sale at the supermarket. We don’t go out for ice cream because I find it much more satisfying to pay less and enjoy it at home in a cup or cone. My neighbor has two daighters and takes them to the local ice cream stand frequently and drops $20 there but to him is is about making memories and rewarding his excellent students which I totally get.

Look at the ingredients in a container of ice cream. Very few are made without bad ingredients. It may cost more to make at home, but I know the minimal ingredients I put in it. For me, health-wise, I prefer to pay more & make my own.

When you said homemade ice cream, I instantly thought of rose petal ice cream. I don't know why... I've never eaten it. But, If you're going to make it yourself, might as well make it something you can't find to buy. I'm not sure but I may have run into it while traveling in Greece, or France... I don't know. I just thought of it. I have rose water that could be used for the water and vanilla. Then, one rose, preferably wild, could be washed (and possibly blanched), cut into tiny pieces and added in. I might try that. It would also be good with orange blossom water and a touch of orange, or zested orange peel. You've set ideas flowing now...OH BOY!!!

I shop Aldi, Lidl, and the Dollar Tree. All 3 are nearly beside one another. I meal plan 7 days of breakfast, snacks, and dinners, inventory what we have, make a list of what I need to buy and then I check the price of the items on line so I know which store will be cheaper on that item. I always make enough for dinner so I can pack my lunch for work. I set aside $10 a week for a pantry filler. What ever I find a good sale price on I will buy $10 worth. I love the 10 for $10 sales that LidI has about ever 5 weeks. But sometimes the Dollar Tree will have a special buy on an item that is way cheaper than anywhere. Such as the shelf stable oat or Almond milk for $1.25. The shelf stable cartons are great for camping. I spend $300 a month for a family of 3. The $300 includes toiletries, cleaning supplies and all home needs. I plan every penny of the $300 every month.

I do NOT shop at Walmart. They built a huge business on being the lowest prices. They do not have the lowest prices. People assume they do.
I shop at my local Kroger, Dillon's, store. I shop for sale ads, loss leaders, and clearance deals. I spend less than $100/week for three people and 2 doggies.
I have a large supply of food in my pantry, frig and freezer.

Aldi used to be my go to store for staple items. Unfortunately, since the start of the pandemic Aldi's prices have soared. Now when I go to Aldi it's just to see what's on clearance.
We've accumulated quite a bit of food over the past 2 years. Lots of home canned things & meats in both freezers.
We are seriously working on mainly using what we already have on hand.
For the two of us we budget $75-80 a month. This is for a gallon of milk weekly, one can of diet soda daily for each of us, tea bags, staples we run out of and taking advantage of loss leaders.
We have quail who provide all the eggs we need as well as meat.

Within a six mile radius of my home, there are 8 different grocery stores (WalMart, Publix, Lidl, Harris Teeter, Aldi, Lowe’s, Food Lion and Ingles). I make my list of loss leaders at each store and every Friday morning I load a cooler bag in the back of the car and head out. Monthly trips to Sam’s and Costco are also part of my routine. I wish we had Flash Food here. It looks like there are some great deals to be had.

We have 2 main stores in our town. Walmart and Safeway. I shop the loss leaders from Safeway, they usually have great deals on meat. We do most shopping at Walmart. Every other month we drive to another town and shop the deals at Grocery Outlet. Our budget is $400.00 a month for 4 people. Love the ice cream recipe. Definitely going to give that a try.

My husband and I grocery shop at our local grocery store: H‑E‑B; we also go to Costco and sometimes to Sprouts. We cook and eat all our meals, snacks and beverages at home. We eat out about once a year.
Our grocery budget is $1200/month for the two of us. I know that’s high for a lot of people but we treat food as medicine and buy the best quality we can afford, to invest in our health now and later. God bless!

Aldi is 3 miles from my house and we have shopped there primarily for at least 12 years. Walmart Neighborhood Market is about 2 miles from Aldi. I typically buy our staples from Aldi but go to Walmart for what Aldi doesn’t carry, such as cornmeal and buttermilk. I’ve never understood how a store can operate in Texas without cornmeal or buttermilk, but they had me at their peanut butter!

Another great video, Emmy and Paul! There is a Walmart, Kroger, Aldi, and IGA within about 2-5 min from my home. I buy my staples at Aldi, cat food/litter and household items at Walmart, and shop loss leaders/markdowns at Kroger. We have a local butcher shop and a homegrown vegetable stand here too. I will often stock.uo on locally raised meat and fresh fruits and veggies at those places. My sister supplies me with farm fresh eggs. I am blessed to have so many options here in Lebanon, Indiana! Oooh, I want to make that ice cream. I love chocolate, so definitely would add some cocoa and maybe some walniluts, mini marshmallows, and chocolate chips!!! Blessings

Wonderful as always, just started a new job they give us 25 dollar gift cards a week at Meijer. These gift cards are for the first 90 days also we get another 50 dollar card per month for perfect attendance so will be doing shopping at meijers. We have a local store we also will go to if they have a good loss leader. On Sundays we have a food cupboard not to far from. Church. We will stop there on our way home to see if there is anything we can use to help stretch our food. Usually get our rice and beans from there. On a normal week without all the extra blessings we are getting at the moment we spend about 50.00 per week. Sorry so long have a blessed week.

Hi Emmy- I’ve made that ice cream in the past and i agree with you. It’s a little too sweet. I’ve added a little bit of instant espresso or instant coffee to the mixture and it helps balance out the sweetness if you want to try that flavor out next time . I add like a teaspoon or so of the instant coffee. Have a good weekend 🎉

Hello, just dropping in to thank you on the tip you have a few videos ago about storing strawberries in glass jars.
I was sceptical but since I have a small strawberry patch that produces small amounts frequently I thought I'd give it a try.
I was amazed, after a week the first jar I had only 1 soft berry. I even had to start a second jar.
I did purchase local berries and made my low sugar jam and today I bought more on another trip to Lancaster and am trying to dehydrate them.
I also use a food saver to package meats, cheese, whatever when I buy in bulk or on loss leaders

Comparing groceries at Aldi and Walmart: some things like milk, bread, butter, milk, for example are all comparable. But other items like breakfast cereal do not compare, we do not like Aldi breakfast cereal. Also our local Aldi seems to regularly be out of certain fresh produce items, which is frustrating. Sometimes it is fine to run into 2 grocery stores, other times you don’t have that extra time or don’t have the health/energy to do so. Thanks for this informative video!

For grocery shopping, I rotate around with Kroger, Aldi and Walmart. Kroger is closest to our house, so I mostly go there for convenience. I was very surprised at how low the difference in prices were between Aldi and Walmart!
I need to start making my own ice cream because I seem to have gotten hooked on this whole milk ice cream made at a creamery in my state. It’s $6.99 for a quart. Pricey, but so good. However my waistline is expanding as a result, so in all honesty, I will stop buying it to help cut back on calories!

Since my unfortunate car accident last winter I frequent it and found a lot of good prices on meats especially. I learned how to use digital coupons and get free stuff by member points made each month (100). Thank you Emmy and Paul for your kindly sharing.
