The 5 little things are part of the valve system of the motor that operates the spool box that turns the roll and pulls the paper onto the lower roller.
In a Speakeasy they had a piano like this, and my Grandma said,"Everybody was drunk, shouting and laughing, and having a good time. Those were the days when you didn't have to give a Damn.
To those wondering what brand of roll this is, it sounds a lot like the medley rolls that the Universal/Aeolian company produced around 1910-18'ish. It was created by a talented arranger at a drafting board (perhaps Ellis Linder or George Swift?). It's not hand played for the record. I have a similar Broadway Medley roll -they made one every year- by Universal and the style of arranging sounds the same. Wonderful roll and imo the piano sounds great, thank you for posting! Erik
I love this! And I love the tuning (or lack of tuning), and the sound. I have had one of my pianos tuned in a bit "bent" (word... "cracked sound") cause I love it so. I have always said "no" to the question from the tuner "don't you think it's much better now?". And what lovely "5 little things". Who can resist visible mechanic?!? =) I should make my regular piano mechanic visible ^_^ I have listened several times by now =)
Hi, If the roll is turning but not playing a myriad of areas be leaking and need repair. Best to have a technician inspect and diagnose it.
If this helps, sometimes the switch to turn on the pump is below the keybed as a toggle. It could also be inside the keyslip in front of the keys. Or it could be inside the spoolbox (roll area).
Have you ever thought about duplicating this roll with one of many services you can find now and selling the copies on eBay? Since the first time I saw this video, I can't find this roll anywhere. What you have is a true one-of-a-kind roll that once it is gone, I believe this tune will be lost forever.
@bakhirun nah, after a while, the tips of your fingers harden up and it gets easier and easier to play with force, and it can really give you a broad range of sounds to choose from. (there's a lot more you can get out of forceful playing than you might think ;3)
we have a huyler and sons 1910's player, its been electrified, and i cannot for the life of me remember where the play engage switch was. it will roll the roll, but is just silent..... my cousin showed me where it was when i was 6, and i dont remember anymore. makes me so mad. and huylers are almost non existent so i cant find any scanned manuals....
Boy I bet you have to have frequent tune-ups on that poor old piano! The hammers are doing their hammering all right - any live pianist who played that hard would end up with very sore fingers. (Although in fact I once saw a Chinese girl in a contest playing like that, PLAYING THE TUNE with determination and force. It really looked like she hated the piano and hated what she was doing and was taking out her hatred on the poor instrument, nyaaahh. Ragtime is nicer.
What a wonderful old piano....this is great.

Entranced by the music...... but my eyes are torn between the keys and the roll motor chugging away!

"My Little Pet Chicken" made me want to cry. Just imagining the innocence of Pre-War America. Anyway, what a fabulous instrument!

i love the music! what are the 5 little things that go up and down when you switched the piano on?
That would be the air motor that drives the roll.
Nice piano! How much did it cost? Sounds like it needs some work to get it running like new but other than that it's great!
