"Black Raven" is a folk revision of the poem-song of the non-commissioned officer of the Nevsky Infantry Regiment Nikolai Verevkin "Under the Green Wet", first published in 1837 in the journal "Library for Reading". The poem "went to the people" and existed as a song in various ways. Belongs to the genre of cruel romances. The song is considered to be Cossack and tells the story of a dying Cossack who asks the raven to tell his relatives about his death. General Peter Krasnov considered it a song of the Don Cossacks during the Caucasian War of 1817-1864. The plot is very sad, riddled with longing and even mysticism. Two main characters: a man and a bird. Both images, the first is a warrior, the second is a raven. A wounded man lies on the battlefield and watches a black forerunner of death circling above him in the sky. The words of the first verse show that the guy still does not believe that his last minutes are coming. All narration is conducted in the first person and belongs to the hero. He promises a predator that he will not become his prey, although he is greatly wounded. However, the raven feels a near demise, spreading its claws. The dying man asks the raven to fly to his homeland and tell his mother that he died in the battle for his land. He also wants to hand over the bloodied scarf to his bride, who gave it to him. With this gesture, it would be like to return freedom to her bride and free her from the promise to wait for him. He further explains the reason. He wants the raven to say that he has found another bride and will soon marry her. In this case, it means death (death is now his bride), which is about to take possession of him. With this bride they were accompanied by a sharp saber of the enemy, And mother earth will crown them. And the bayonet of a soldier will be a friend at this wedding with death. In the last verse, the warrior realizes that death overtakes him and tells the crow about it. Multiple repetition of words with the mention of a bird-messenger of bad news gives a special mood and a mournful tragic tone. These images are very impressive and a great sorrow appears in the listener's soul and tears come.
You have combined the plots of two different songs - "Black Raven" and "under the willow". In this video, the song is "under the willow", not "black raven".

A short description of the song for those who do not understand Russian: A young Cossack is mortally wounded and dies on the battlefield. The Raven came to eat the corpse. But Kozak tells him that he is still alive. And asks the Raven to fly to his native home to pass on a message to his parents and young wife that he has found another bride and describes his wedding in detail. From the description of the wedding, it becomes clear that his new bride is Death.
Pelageya [pɪə lʌ 'ɡɪə ɪa] 33-years-old. Start singing and stage performance at 3 years old. And now she have 30 years of experience stage performance. Best and greatest russian folk singer.
Firstly, I am NOT Russian and to me listening to them talk {or shout} it sounds like Klingon - BUT - they have magnificent voice and their music is second to none -but this song - or rather this dirge just happens to be one of my favourite pieces, but every other translation seen is quite error ridden - so I off the lengthy translation from Alexey Lavrov - who has done some extensive research - and the bonus of course is the beautiful Pelageya, with an equally beautiful voice - there are many other singers in Russia - but in my humble opinion Pelageya is the "Creme de la creme" **Pelageya sings “Under Willow” January 17, 2017 | Alexey Lavrov When I was asked to write a blog about my favorite vocal pieces I had some doubts: Am I a good story teller? Is my English good enough to tell it the way I’d like? How do I choose just four pieces out of so many favorites? Actually, what are the criteria anyway … ? The only certain thing was-if I do it, I will start with a Russian folk song. Because folk songs are the reservoir of Russian vocal treasure and because they are personal to me. My first steps into the world of music and singing were made with folk songs. I grew up with a grandmother who was always singing: while doing housework, picking mushrooms and berries in the woods, taking a rest… From her I heard most of them: happy and sad songs, songs for work and holidays, wedding songs, funeral ones, funny and joking ones. One can express anything and everything with a song. A folk song is like a prayer, a meditation. It clears one’s soul and brings comfort to one’s heart. For this blog I’ve picked out the Russian folk song “Under Willow”. Most folk songs are anonymous, but the names of the writers of some are known. The lyrics for this song belong to Nikolay Veryovkin, the officer of Nevsky Infantry. He fought in the Russian-Persian War of 1826-1828, the Russian-Turkish War of 1828-1829 and the Polish Campaign of 1830-1831. The song pictures a wounded Russian warrior lying under the willow, watching a black raven flying over his head. In Slavonic mentality and folklore black raven is a prophetic bird that lives up to 300 years, keeps secrets, leads to hidden treasures, predicts death. In songs this ominous bird often flies over battlefield and then brings families news of their son’s or husband’s death. The dying warrior asks the raven to fly to his motherland and tell his father, mother and wife that they shouldn’t expect him to return.
Under the green willow The wounded cossack was lying Oy du, under the green one The wounded cossack was lying. A raven bird over him was flying, Began croaking loudly. Ay du, raven wouldn’t fly Hadn’t he smelled a good bite. Black raven, don’t croak over my head, I am still a cossack alive. You’d better fly to my father’s and mother’s home, Give the kerchief soaked in my blood To my young and lovely wife. Tell them, raven, that I’d got married To another girl. That I’ve found a bride In the open field, across the river. Was our wedding quiet, subdued, Under the willow bush, Oy du, quiet, subdued Under the willow bush… The matchmaker was the saber sharp, The best man was bayonet of damask steel. Oy du, saber sharp And the bayonet was the best man. A swift bullet married us fast And motherland wed us. Oy du, swift bullet and motherland us wed. I chose this song because it resembles the northern folk songs from the region where I was born and raised-Komi Republic. Northern songs are different from other regions; they inherited the melodies and the moods of the nations that lived in those parts of Russia. They reflect the northern landscape-wild nature, a lot of snow, rivers and swamps. And they resemble, more than other types of Russian songs, a prayer or a meditation. In conclusion, I’d like to introduce the performer. The soloist is Pelageya, a Russian singer who debuted on stage as a little girl. She remains one of the public’s favorites. She sings Russian folk songs, romances and pop songs. At 13, after winning a number of vocal competitions, she received an invitation from the great Russian cellist, outstanding musician and public figure Mstislav Rostropovich to perform at the Evian Music Festival, alongside with Evgeny Kissin, Ravi Shankar, Paata Burchuladze, B.B. King. Galina Vishnevskaya, in her French Press interview, called Pelageya “the future of the opera world”. I’m sure the singer would have been a great success, had she chosen opera. But I’m also happy for the choice she has made. Thanks to her arrangements, folk songs acquire new, sometimes unexpected sounds, and become hits with young audiences, ensuring this genre continues to thrive.** The above is a copy and paste from a link I stumbled upon - so it is not my work - but unfortunately, I have lost the link

Russian songs usually have a sad/melancholy sound to them (including contemporary music) because they are usually written in minor keys which stems from it’s long history of orthodox liturgical music being written in minor key. On the other hand major keys are much more prevalent in the west especially after the baroque period.
This is a Cossack song. The Cossacks are a military class(caste). We have more sad songs than happy ones. Mostly songs about war and death and the deep Russian soul of the Cossacks.

Russian folk music. Senturies ago instruments were expensive and not all people could play them. But during long winter nights large families gathered together around pechka (large fireplace with oven and warm bed on it) and did various things like sewing, stitching, mending farmer tools, crafting and cooking. Children younger 5 played on warm pechka bed and watched adults working from above and learned from them. Not to do all this in silence adults in turn told stories and fairy tales or sang together. Singing together in different voices, notes and speed helped to make music with just voices. These songs were also used for work in fields.

Hi! No idea how UA-cam algorithms work, but I'm here and I loved you reaction😊 Just wanted to share some thoughts about you saying that russian folk music is mostly sad, which is true. The geopolitical position of Russia is quite interesting. This is not Europe, but not Asia. It's both. Russian culture is generally ambiguous and contradictory. Moreover, Russia two-thirds of its historical existence, waged wars, mostly defensive. So, yeah, the eternal threat of war found it's reflection in culture. Plus, Russian man experiences the suffering of the Fatherland as his own, cause collective consciousness is(was) quite strong here

Well. As a russian I should say that all our culture (folk stories, music and so on) is sad and heavy, i guess (i don't know if I can use this construction in English)... As all falk arts it is deeply connect to our history. And it wasn't easy. We had a kind of slaves for a long time, and also russia had to protect herself from others, so we had a lot of wars, and inside the country also. And when you connect all this historical facts with russian close mentality, you'll see that it is the only way to show truly feelings. (I guess in classical music also. Rachmaninoff's symphonies are the best examples, I think) If you're interested in this case in russian culture, you can try to listen our songs connected to 2 world war. Like Журавли... Hello. Of course not all of Russian folk songs are sad. Kalinka for example and many others. But song in this video not even sad but tragic. Name of the song is "Black Raven".
Yes, Russian songs are often sad ...unfortunately. Because all our lives, our people are constantly fighting for a place in the sun...for love, for work, for children... and it's hard! We need more optimism..
Under the green willow Kozak wounded lied down. Oh, under the green (willow) Kozak wounded lied down. Flew there bird-raven and began to caw above the hedge. Oh, did not the black raven perch readying its greedy beak. Do not caw, black raven, above my head. Oh, you black raven I, Kozak, am still alive! Go, fly, you black raven to my father, my mother at home. Give this bloodied rag to my young wife. To her you say, black raven, that I married another. Tell that I found myself a bride in a clear fields beyond the river. Say there was a wedding silent and humble under the willow hedge. Oh, silent and humble under the willow hedge. Say that matchmaker was sharp sabre, groomsman was the steel bayonet. Oh, sharp sabre, groomsman was the steel bayonet. Married me the quick bullet, wedding rites did mother earth.

You're right. The song is sad, it's about a warrior who was mortally wounded in battle, he asks the raven who twirls and waits for his death to tell his parents and bride the news of his death. Pelageya is the name of the singer who led in this song. Here's another beautiful performance, also a Russian folk song. ua-cam.com/video/Gy7E2Gv4tOQ/v-deo.html

A short description of the song for those who do not understand Russian:
A young Cossack is mortally wounded and dies on the battlefield. The Raven came to eat the corpse. But Kozak tells him that he is still alive. And asks the Raven to fly to his native home to pass on a message to his parents and young wife that he has found another bride and describes his wedding in detail. From the description of the wedding, it becomes clear that his new bride is Death.

Firstly, I am NOT Russian and to me listening to them talk {or shout} it sounds like Klingon - BUT - they have magnificent voice and their music is second to none -but this song - or rather this dirge just happens to be one of my favourite pieces, but every other translation seen is quite error ridden - so I off the lengthy translation from Alexey Lavrov - who has done some extensive research - and the bonus of course is the beautiful Pelageya, with an equally beautiful voice - there are many other singers in Russia - but in my humble opinion Pelageya is the "Creme de la creme"
**Pelageya sings “Under Willow”
January 17, 2017 | Alexey Lavrov
When I was asked to write a blog about my favorite vocal pieces I had some doubts: Am I a good story teller? Is my English good enough to tell it the way I’d like? How do I choose just four pieces out of so many favorites? Actually, what are the criteria anyway … ?
The only certain thing was-if I do it, I will start with a Russian folk song. Because folk songs are the reservoir of Russian vocal treasure and because they are personal to me. My first steps into the world of music and singing were made with folk songs.
I grew up with a grandmother who was always singing: while doing housework, picking
mushrooms and berries in the woods, taking a rest… From her I heard most of them: happy and sad songs, songs for work and holidays, wedding songs, funeral ones, funny and joking ones.
Under the green willow
The wounded cossack was lying
Oy du, under the green one
The wounded cossack was lying.
A raven bird over him was flying,
Began croaking loudly.
Ay du, raven wouldn’t fly
Hadn’t he smelled a good bite.
Black raven, don’t croak over my head,
I am still a cossack alive.
You’d better fly to my father’s and mother’s home,
Give the kerchief soaked in my blood
To my young and lovely wife.
Tell them, raven, that I’d got married
To another girl.
That I’ve found a bride
In the open field, across the river.
Was our wedding quiet, subdued,
Under the willow bush,
Oy du, quiet, subdued
Under the willow bush…
The matchmaker was the saber sharp,
The best man was bayonet of damask steel.
Oy du, saber sharp
And the bayonet was the best man.
A swift bullet married us fast
And motherland wed us.
Oy du, swift bullet
and motherland us wed.
Thanks to her arrangements, folk songs acquire new, sometimes unexpected sounds, and become hits with young audiences, ensuring this genre continues to thrive.**

Russian songs usually have a sad/melancholy sound to them (including contemporary music) because they are usually written in minor keys which stems from it’s long history of orthodox liturgical music being written in minor key. On the other hand major keys are much more prevalent in the west especially after the baroque period.

Plus, Russian man experiences the suffering of the Fatherland as his own, cause collective consciousness is(was) quite strong here
Not all of our folk-songs are sad. But it's the sad ones that are the most popular.

This song is about a new wedding between a heavy wounded warrior and his new bride, whose name is Death.
He lies under a willow and speaks to a Black Raven. He asks to take the headscarf full of his blood and bring it to his wife as a sign that he frees her. Because he found another "girl" to marry.
The matchmaker was his sharp sable...
His bayonet - his friend (wedding witness)...
"Swift bullet married us...
Mother Earth blessed us"...

Rachmaninoff's symphonies are the best examples, I think)
If you're interested in this case in russian culture, you can try to listen our songs connected to 2 world war. Like Журавли... It's also deep and dark. But really beautiful. And famous in Russia.
