Thanks Dustin for spending the time and effort to give us your very experienced and balanced reviews.
I have this lens and it deserves all the accolades heaped upon it, it is really special.
I particularly enjoy your relaxed and informative delivery in this video, you seem confident and assured; perhaps
because of the extra time spent with this lens!
All the best
Randy
It does help when you are more familiar with the lens; you aren’t learning on the fly.
I just picked this up for $340!!!! it was 375 but the guy said it was clean, and there's a tiny spot on an edge that doesn't appear in images, so he knocked off a little, i should probably have asked him for more of a reduction since a lens imperfection should prob knock off more than 10%, but I'm just so thrilled at the deal, came w the box and hood and everything, and most importantly it's an absolutely stunning lens, and one i love using to force myself to focus manually, since i'm still learning.
i know this is ancient but thanks so much Dustin, once I became serious about lenses I discovered you're the best. obv the most thorough, but it's much more than that, always such inimitable presentation, i just really appreciate the work you do, and rarely express it. On that note I plan on joining your Patreon when June rolls around.
take care
That's a steal for what continues to be an amazing lens.
Thank you for the review, Mr Abbott. I recently got this lens mint condition for $500. This should be the best deal I've ever got in camera lens.
That's an amazing lens for that kind of money!
I don’t understand how you only have 48k subs, you should def have alooooot more, your reviews are so thorough! And very well put.
Not everyone wants thorough and detailed. Some want sensational and simplistic.
i think its the channel style,DA‘s review is very serious and technical, but most people just watch for fun, thats why Kai W has lots sub
I had this beautiful lens, there was nothing to complain about it, performance, handling, build quality, the smoothness of the focus,, everything perfect, except one thing, it's heavy and was often left home, it got replaced by a Zeiss 50mm f2 Loxia
... Thanks Dustin
It is a lovely lens optically, for sure!!
Thank you for the review. And thanks for sharing your love of this lens. It shines through. I bought after seeing this review and it is my most prized lens. The person who commented on Loxia 21 is correct in that it is the best in that range, IMHO. Beautiful colors, beautiful astro colors.
It's a special lens, for sure.
3:10 sec!!! Exactly Dustin! Not ever one pays as much attention and that's why I am here asking about this 50mm 2.8 Macro. I see and often I am troubled with details other simply do not noticed. My question is to 50mm since this is closer to 65mm then 90mm.( i commented on your 90mm review asking about this 50mm 2.8) I got a lot of image distortion in my portrait when using 50mm. And consider 50mm in general a wide angle lens. No I am thinking to buy 50mm ideally or this 65mm for beauty portraits. I think to fill full frame with around 1/4 of the face of subject and I am simply worrying I will get image distorted like I did with 50mm when shoot from say waist to head. So my question is do you feel this strong distortion (bending) will be present with beauty close ups shoots? I feel it might but as you said at the beginning. No many pay as much attention as you and I do get this problem no one can actually understand and answer to my problem..
I've used this lens for portraits and weddings, and I've never noticed any distortion related issues.
Thank you for your excellent series of reviews of this legendary optic! I agree that this lens is indeed special and ranks as the single best lens I have used on the Sony A7 platform, and is one of the best lenses I have ever had the joy to use on any camera. Zero buyer's remorse from me, though now I am eagerly waiting for the release of the APO-Lanthar 100mm F2.5 from Voightlander!
I’m looking forward that release, too.
voigtlander never cease to amaze me , their fe 50 1.2 is the best 50 ive used
I haven't tested that one yet.
Thank you Dustin for the 3 reviews on the 65mm f2 APO lens. I really wanted an APO lens. And could not decide between the 65 or 50 from Voigtlander. I'm pretty certain your final thoughts on the 65mm f2 APO clinched it for me. 50mm lenses aren't my favourite, even though it is more compact for travel compared to the 65mm. But I am willing to sacrifice the extra size and weight convvenience for the extra focal length and characteristics of this lens. I have watched quite a few of your lens reviews, and it is very rare to see you give so much praise to a single lens in this case the 65mm f2. Brilliant reviews as usual. Thank You
It's a lovely lens that I still use all the time.
Love these reviews! Very good and informative... A funny thing in this one tough, I had to stop and look up some of those helios lenses! Looked amazing.. Love that vintage feel!
They're pretty sweet, for sure.
Another wonderfully thoughtful review. Thanks Dustin. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the CV 40/1.2. I’ve had it for 3 months and adore it for all the same reasons.
I do plan to take a look at it, though right now I’m overrun by review projects.
Can't imagine why :-) You excel at the quality versus quantity argument!
The 40mm is also my top #1 favourite lens ever (and I've gone through tons of different manual lenses). Sure it's not optically as perfect as the 65mm but the output visually is pretty stunning and the size/handling is just perfect. I had the leica mount version since I initially used it on Fuji, but I switched to Sony pretty soon. On both platforms it was my favourite lens. Just sold my copy so I could buy the FE version. Missing it already.
Really very much appreciate you taking the time in creating this review.
You're welcome.
Good video for the Voightlander 65mm, I have a few Voightlander lens for the Nikon ZF and Zfc and I truly enjoy using the manual focus on this lens, the 65mm is the next one that I am looking to purchase, at this time I have the 15mm f4.5, 4omm f1.2 and APSC 23mm f1.2.
I still use mine all the time for my product photography. It's a beautiful lens.
Just received the 65 APO-Lanthar. The rendering is special even on the camera displays. I have the Voigtlander Nokton 50 1.5, and while it is a very sharp lens that renders very nicely, it is not at the level of the APO-Lanthar. The purity and cleanliness of the colors yield a very "delicious" rendering and a kind of "sparkle" to chrome or crystal highlights. The build quality is exceptional and, oddly enough, the heavy lens balances beautifully with the A7R3. Needless to say, I have put down a deposit for the 110 mm APO-Lanthar.
There is just one little problem with this lens. All of my other lenses pale in comparison. It is not that they are bad, just that they are not APO. Now, if only there were some auto-focus lenses that performed like this. From your review, it looks like the Sony-Zeiss 50 1.4 gets close, although it is not a full APO design.
Thanks for another wonderful review series.
I too am very intrigued by the thought of the 110mm. This is a special lens, for sure, and it does kind of put other lenses to shame. I have a very good kit, but this lens is still a standout.
Thanks for the well put together review as always. This is a keeper for me along with the Loxia 21mm for the Sony system. Whenever I have thoughts of selling this lens to fund another, I look at my images and this review and it all goes away. The biggest strengths of the lens, for me, is the color, micro-contrast and clarity. Comparing it to my previous Voigtlander Ultron 40mm f2 which was sharp but somewhat 'dark'. Compared to the Milvus 50mm f2, the images of this lens are more 'transparent' or 'clear'. Though neither of those previous lenses are a slouch by any means.
That's a sound observation. I'm very interested in testing the Loxia 21mm - the idea of having a compact yet very sharp 21mm is very intriguing.
Dustin Abbott The Loxia 21mm needs to be experienced to be appreciated. When I bought it, I already had the Batis 25mm; of which, I already liked the images and the convenience of the autofocus. But that 21mm is just so good for me that I keep both for their specific uses. The folks at phillipreeve.net have intensive experience with it, and whose opinions I value & enjoy as much as yours.
Hi! I really love this lens and the feeling great to work with. I saw also that you did a test with the Makro-Planar 50/2. I have not tried that lens but curious about it. What would you say is the biggest difference between them (except 65 vs 50...)?
I really prefer the handling of the Voitlander and the overall image quality. It's my preference between the two lenses.
I just found this lens second hand somewhere for US$440. Would the price be suspectly low? What kind of issues should I look for when buying used gear? Also, are you still using this lens? Should I go for the purchase at this price? Thank you.
At this stage I wouldn't consider that unusual. The lens has been out for 6-7 years.
Hi Dustin - I finally bought the Voigtlander 65mm for my Sony A7rii on a January sale here in Sydney. Should get it in my hot little hands in about a week. Your reviews on it and reply below helped me 'take the plunge'. Thanks again. :)
You'll enjoy the lens. It's a beautiful optic
I just got the Sigma 65mm f/2.0 and really like that 65mm fov . Feels so natural to me .
I’d seen this review and even spoke with you about this lens . But I didn’t have a Sony body at this time . I do now have the Sony a7siii. I may pick up this lens if I come up with the bills for all that new Sony gear being paid off . Lol
I love being able to get up close and personal to nature . That Sigma just doesn’t get quite close enough. I got it for live music not nature and wildflowers. I want this for that .
Thanks Dustin.
I find this lens extremely useful. I use it for almost all my product photography for my reviews.
My used Voigtlander 65mm: While turning the focusing ring the magnification delays at times and I have to turn more for the magnification to occur. Because the lens were bought used (2 weeks ago) I am not sure if that is normal. Also the focusing ring turns a bit beyond the infinity mark.
It's hard to say. It sounds like it is functioning as per normal. As for infinity - there's typically a little extra there for thermal expansion. They are making sure the lens can focus all the way to infinity it varying weather conditions.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you for info.
It is a great lens. Do you see Voigtlander 50mm f1.2 for sony? I think this is great too if you can leave with manual focus.
I haven't tested it yet. It's hard to fit some of these more obscure brands into my schedule when there are so many new releases!
@@DustinAbbottTWI but it is maybe the best 50mm for Sony e mount.
what lens did you use for filming this review? looks amazing
That info is always at the end of every one of my reviews. I don't remember offhand.
Loved your writing and videos on the lens. I shoot video mainly and my only experience with Voigtlander was the 17.5mm for MFT (GH5) and I liked it. I'm looking for a specialty lens to complement my run n gun stuff (on Sony now). The 65mm f/2 APO is in the pole position, and I kinda like the 70mm range! Could you point me to some of your video examples you mention? I can't find a lot of video work from this lens. I know it breathes extensively but I won't be rack focusing like crazy anyway (talking heads, b-roll).
I’m actually travelling at the moment and can’t remember off the top of my head. I think I have done a long-term review that would have more content in it
Hello Dustin. Thank you for your insightful review. I have one question. Would you recommend this lens for food photography in restaurants? Working distance in this situation is very limited. I found Sony 90 2.8G Macro and Canon 100 2.8L Macro almost imposible to take the shot. It was too close and tight.
I do think this is a great food focal length. Particularly when paired with a camera like the a7R3, which gives you IBIS (helpful for those handheld shots!) and also deep cropping ability.
I love this lens, but plan on adding the 50mm 1.4 as well. Diff bokeh structure and overall rendition, plus it's 50 and color..BUT..the 65 is my favorite by far. For critical work, it's exceeded with everything else I've tried and own including 85mm Batis and 100mm STF.
I own them both, too. Use them for different purposes.
Thanks for your really useful reviews, I have just ordered this lens using your link, much appreciated.
Thanks for using the link. I love this lens!
I'd be interested in seeing a direct comparison between this lens and the Sigma 70mm A macro both on the Sony A7R3.
I chose a Canon mount lens for my direct comparison, and that episode is being edited now.
So they'll be close but not exact since the sensors will be different. But why not just use the A7R3 since you have the MC-11? That way you would get an exact comparison.
My point is that I've already shot a comparison, and it wasn't to the Voigtlander, not that I couldn't do such a comparison. If I get in an E mount version of the lens (which I would like to), I'll compare to the Voigtlander then.
You're worried about the MC-11 not being perfectly aligned in the corners? Actually, that would make an interesting test as well, comparing a Canon A lens with the MC-11 vs the same lens designed specifically for the Sony.
Since your review, Voigtlander 110mm f/2.5 macro APO-lanthar has been released and also Zeiss Batis 135mm f/2.8. Any chance you could review them? Batis 135mm is also APO design. I’d like to know if Voigtlander 110mm is a better pick than 65mm. 110mm is of 1:1 ratio. And how Batis 135mm is compared with Milvus 135mm. Thanks a lot.
I’ve already reviewed the Batis 135 (search on my channel). I will probably review the Voigt 110 sometime in 2019
Dear Dustin, if the choice is this lens or Sony 90mm macro G version, which do you suggest according to image quality?
Hi Nagy, I can't really answer that as I haven't spent any time with the Sony yet.
Oh, i did not guess that. Thank you.
Finally I ordered a Voigtländer Macro APO-Lanthar 65mm f/2 . I am so excited to get it next weekend. Thank you @@DustinAbbottTWI
Hi Dustin. Great video as always! I’m hoping that you could review the Voigtländer 40mm F1.2 soon!
Not soon - my review schedule is already set through the end of June.
I wait for the Vöigtlander Macro APO-Lanthar 110mm f/2.5 and hopefully you can review that lens too. Great video
I definitely plan to do that review.
I am very tempted to buy the Voigtländer Macro Apo-Lanthar 65mm 2.0, I know it is very good for macro and medium distance, but how good is it at infinity for landscape with 61 megapixels sensor ? At the moment I use my analog manual Leitz (Leica) Macro-Elamrit R 60mm 2.8 which is very good, set the aperture at 4.0 for macro and medium distance and you get lovely results, for landscape set the aperture at 5.6 og 8.0 and you get good results, a little gem of a workhorse that never dies, do you know this lens !?
I don't know the lens you mention, but this lens is incredibly good optically in all situations I've put it in.
Looks like a great lens for manual shooters! Is it possible to leave the hood permanently attached, fixing the lens cap to the hood threads? In my Iceland trips the hood was really important, as it allowed me to shoot at almost any angle to the rain (actually a water mist), except facing the wind directly. In my first trip with hood left at home (on EF24-70/2.8L I it was too huge) many pictures were ruined by water dips on filter. I could safely shoot only downwinds. Sadly the 65/2 lens is not suitable for such adventures.
Yes you can, as the front of the hood is threaded to take filters.
Thank you Mr Abbott
You’re welcome.
Exceptional review. Have been eyeing this for a while and you’re pushing me towards making the jump. Since you’ve added this to your collection, do you have an 85mm that you use as well? It’s an odd focal length.
I use this lens all the time for my product shots, and I've also used it for a few weddings and portrait sessions. I always love the results. And yes, I own an 85mm lens as well (actually three of them, at the moment!)
I felt in love Voigtlaender in my first sight. I miss my Nokton so much. I've been saving money for 110mm F2.5 apo-lanthar. It would cost $1349/149000yen. It is not cheap lens, but I hope it would do more than its price.
If it is optically similar to this lens, I don’t doubt that it will be exceptional.
Dustin Abbott www.cosina.co.jp/seihin/voigtlander/e-mount/e-110mm/e-110mm-kosei.jpg
Actually it has more "extraordinary partial dispersion glass" elements (that is written in the image) than ordinary glass elements. Better be good.
@6:00 haven't seen this cat in any of your videos before! :-)
As much as I want this lens, I also want to see how the 110/2.5 turns out. The extra reach and true 1:1 macro capabilities have me very excited.
Excellent video as always.
Hard to argue with that. The 110 was announced after I was already into this review, and this lens gives me a lot of hope for it to be excellent as well.
Another great review, Dustin. A shame this lens isn't made for my Nikon D850 (yet!). I think your comment about the colour rendition of Voigtlander lenses is absolutely accurate - my Voigtlander 58mm Nokton delivers stunning colours and microcontrast. As you say, it's hard to define what particular aspects of colour create this unique effect (like some Zeiss lenses), but you know the image quality is just different and attention-grabbing. Many thanks.
Color rendition is hard to define but easy to spot. There are some lenses that just produce special-looking images. This is one of them.
I Dustin, I'm an A7rII video user, can you recommend a full Voigtländer lens kit? If yes, which lens do you suggest?
I've only used a few of the E-mount Voigts, but people seem to love the 1.2/40 also, and I've heard good things about the 4/15mm as well.
@@DustinAbbottTWI thanks a lot, I appreciate your hard work and your competence.
Hi Dustin - i have an opportunity to buy one of these used for my Sony A7rii. How does is compare with the Samyang FE 70mm 1.8 in terms of image quality? Thanks :)
Hi David, the Voigtlander is incredibly special optically. The Samyang 75mm isn't quite on the same level (though it is nice). If you can get a good price for the Voigtlander, then go for it. It's a beautiful lens.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks Dustin for your reply. The Voigtlander is my next lens for sure - a friend has just won an award for portraiture with it - all the best for Christmas and 2022 ! :)
Great review Dustin, as always - thank's a lot for it! Competent, fair-minded, precise, and being the result of extensive personal experience. Now I find myself in a double-windmill: I already owe the FE 55/1.8 and the FE 90/2.8 Macro - so do I really need this Voigtländer Juwel too? It could replace both on some excursions, representing a kind of hybrid between them!
That's a tough call, as you don't really need it as a focal length. It's an amazing lens, but I'm not sure that it is necessary in your case.
I can't say that I really NEED it - but it could replace the 55/1.8 and 90/2.8 Macro on some occasions (as a general purpose-lens mit macro-capabilities) - and deliver images of a distinct quality, resp. look-and-feel, with that special three-dimensional contrasty and vivid-color pop which is a characteristic of apo-lenses (?), at least this is my hope ...
That's definitely true. I own the Sony Zeiss Planar 50mm f/1.4 and I still reach for the Voigt for certain situations.
You are the best! Thanks!
Thanks!
Love your reviews Dustin, so honest and detailed. Do you plan on reviewing any Sony lenses? Would love to see the 16-35GM on here!
I'll get to it eventually, though right now my review schedule is full.
Stellar job as usual DA. At $1000.00 I guess it competes with the Sony 90mm Macro however at 65mm it maybe a bit more handy. Thanks for this and other reviews.
Yes and no. The closest comparison for a lens like this is the Zeiss Makro-Planar lenses, though those aren't for Sony.
Agreed.. this is closer to the 50.. Upcoming 110 will compete with the 90
The 90mm Sony lens has an awful lot going for it though - superb image quality, AF with a manual focus clutch, OSS, a programmable button (instant Eye-AF?) and true 1:1 reproduction.
I have that lens, its by far the best Sony lens in terms of image quality. The focus can be a bit tricky.
It is a better lens if you like the focal length and are ok with 1:2 magnification and manual focus. And that's coming from someone who owns the 90mm Macro.
*Thank you for the thorough review.*
My pleasure.
Hi Dustin. I've watched many reviews on cameras and their associated gear and I find your reviews the most well thought out and comprehensive. They almost have a calming effect, which is no small thing in light of what is going on in the world currently...or maybe I'm just old😊. I'd like to support your work so I signed up on your patreon.
One thing I'd like to ask is a statement you made in your review of this lens (which I will be ordering shortly) is that you said that the A7riii was the best camera for manual focus lenses. I am assuming that is because of the EVF? I currently shoot with an a7iii. Do you think the A7iii can also work with manual focus lenses or is a shift to the a7riii necessary at this point? I'm only now relearning how to shoot on manual focus again after stopping many, many years ago. Thank you again for your work.
first of all, thanks for the support. I appreciate it very much! Many of the reasons why I say the a7RIII are a great platform for manual focus are also true on your a7III. The only real difference (besides resolution) that I would point to is that the a7III does have a lower resolution viewfinder, which is perhaps a little more of a negative with manual focus as a lot of the process is visual confirmation of focus. The lens will work just fine on your camera, however, and I'm sure you will enjoy it.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Great! Thank you, Dustin!
@@DustinAbbottTWI One thing I meant to also ask is if you have done or plan to do a how-to video for the best settings on Sony cameras when using manual lenses. I think that would be a very helpful video.
How does it compare to Summicron APO?
Haven't used it, though optically this lens is right up there with the very best.
Hi Dustin, it might be a bit confusing, but apo lenses might not be free of CA. As far as I was told (from Zeiss) there seems to be a treshhold were you can call a lens apo. I asked them a while ago because I noticed some CA on the 55apo and 135apo. That was some smartass comment :-D
Always love to watch your content! I look forward to every new video and I like the way in how you see value in lenses that aren’t papertigers!
Best
Christian
Essentially the difference is that an apochromatic design is able to correct on three channels rather than two. So no, while it doesn't mean absolutely no CA, it does mean no meaningful CA.
I love this lens! Agree with your review.
It's one of the best lenses that no one will ever use!
Dustin Abbott Hahaha so true! There is a bit of a cult following, but small.
I have the Voigtländer Macro APO-LANTHAR 65mm 2.0 and I can very highly recommend it, I use it on Sony A7RIV/A7RIVA
It's a lovely lens.
Still anticipating your 110 2.5 review. Steve huff's review pretty much has me sold, but I think a review from your perspective would seal the deal.
Thanks for the video Dustin!
Hi Eric, unfortunately it probably won’t be until summer that I can fit in that review. I’m already booked solid through May
Can't wait till the 110 APO hits the street !
For sure. It looks to be another fantastic lens.
Did you pay the squirrel to run across the background?
I haven't yet, but I'm expecting his invoice any day now.
Yes at 5:17 to 5:29, I saw before I read your notice ;)
Great review Dustin but your cat stole the show.
I already love that thing and, yet, I've never seen one in real life...
As soon as people hear "manual focus", they get scared off.
...which is strange to me since I frequently use DMF for casual shooting - totally necessary to get the sharpest image. I almost always MF my wide angle which, again, I find even more necessary for anything that's not far off in the distance.
Thanks for the great reviews!
People are lazy. Most just go frame and zap zap zap. While that is needed in some cases, its not an absolute necessity in others
This lens is so tempting, but i feel like i have enough manual lenses already :D
They can be a little addicting.
Great reviews. You are easy to watch and to listen to. A rarity these days!
Glad you like them!
Did you see the Squirrel at 5:17 to 5:29 ;)
LOL - I did
Sir, from what I understand, the 110mm is out. Perchance you might review it soon?
In a few months I am bound to acquire new glass, and I am trying to decide between the Planar 50, this macro, or the 110mm. Where I'm located, I cannot rent them to see for myself. I often shoot dimly lit events and a capable autofocus wide aperture lens like the Planar may come in handy, but I seem to be drawn in by the images of the Voigtlander. As it is, I often use a manual Yashica ML 50mm f/1.4 on my a7III for these events and I still manage, though at 1.4 and the subject at a distance beyond 3m the haze is ridiculous.
Do you have a preference between the Planar 50 and this Apo Lanthar?
I own both of those lenses, and I use more complimentary than competing. I guess it comes down to how much you need the macro performance of the Voigtländer. As for the 110 - I will review it at some point, but I'm seriously backlogged at the moment because of how much gear was released late in 2018.
How would rate this lens to the Nikon 200mm f4 macro?...I enjoy your video's immensely Dustin!!
Sorry, I haven't used the Nikon.
It is Leica 50 APO
zAiss.... nAikon :) original sound ceiss!
What are your thoughts on this lens? Voigtlander 50 mm / 1: 2.0 APO-LANTHAR E
I can't really comment until I get my hands on one...and I'm not sure when that will be.
I'm beginning to wish that I hadn't watched this review now - I already have their splendid 40mm and 15mm lenses and am struggling to justify owning another, but then again ...
I am in the same boat. I have the 40. While its a great lens with so many goodies in that size, this one is just too good to pass. I am hoping the same for 110 that got delayed :(
Gulp. I know the feeling. I did buy this one, and I love it.
I hadn't heard that the 110 was delayed.
Unfortunately yes, my pre-order has been delayed.
Cameraquest updated as - "7/30/18 Cosina announced 110mm f2.5 sales have been delayed a few months. Updates will be posted as they are available. I am guessing this may be because of 40/1.2 popularity"
The delay has been confirmed in other countries as well. Somebody from UK said that Robert White confirmed him the delay as well.
Foto4Max yeah, even I feel so. If the wait gets tedious, I fear I might buy something else for the time being to play with and at the end of the day waste $$$. Cant really justify but it is how it is
I just picked up this lens. For me, the only thing better would be a 40-45mm range. Aside from that, pretty kitty.
Thank you!

He's aging...and growing!
