Nice tier list!. I personally would put Pet Sounds and Standing on the Shoulder of Giants in the B tier, I think there both pretty good covers. Apart from that I agree with most of your rankings. I think my overall favourite would have to be Atom Heart Mother, its simple but it works perfectly 👍xxx.
My favourite is Propaganda followed by Black Sabbath and Surf’s Up. Pet Sounds, Atom Heart Mother and Get Yer Ya Yas Out have the cutest covers - I love animals.
My opinion is that The Hissing of Summer Lawns has a better gatefold than the front and back cover. Hipgnosis designed a lot of great album covers. Atom Heart Mother has a great cover by them. It doesn't say anything really about the music inside, does it? Black Sabbath is an awesome cover and has an interesting backstory. Crosby, Stills, and Nash debut cover has an interesting backstory as well. I think a great topic would be gatefold ratings. Like what do you think of Jefferson Airplane's Volunteers gatefold? E tier. And thanks Larry for your continued support of the music you love!
Pet Sounds considering its genius is a travesty; it was not titled Petting Zoo.❤ The art cover analysis, Larry. Albums should include: some art/ imagery. If it is typography only, how about some variety or some type of mystery ala heroglyphics; and a hint at what's beneath the package, like something relating to the disc's overall thang, eh? Thanx.

I would have a hard time ranking album covers because I would want to factor so many considerations into it; e.g., for me, illustration is so much more work than photography, so I would rank illustrated covers higher...but then, The Who Sell Out, though photographic, was a lot of work because they had to create those props. To me, effort counts for a lot, but one also has to consider how appropriate the cover is for the band and the project, sometimes a simple solution is the best, and...well...I'll leave the ranking to you! Perhaps the visceral response is the easiest way to go when ranking things. Having designed some CD artwork in my day complicates things for me as well.
That Deep Purple Bananas cover never fails to make me laugh and just question who the heck thought that was a good idea. Who looked at that and thought “YEAH, that’s it. THAT’S the album cover” haha.

I think you chose a very good variety of album covers there, not sure about the Pink Floyd cow album cover though!😂🐄
why is the worst at the bottom left? I always thought its going from top left top bottom right, in that order.

Would have put GBYBR in S tier. Such a wonderful illustration by the celebrated English illustrator Ian Beck. The cover really is the epitome of Elton’s glam rock period and whimsical. On the other hand, ROTW could be even lower than C. Not a bad album from Elton but the cover in my opinion was horribly bland.
I would rank album covers differently then you Larry,mine would go from Excellent to Good to Mediocre to Lousy to out and out Crap!,you're to respectful with this stuff and there are only a few album covers I would even rate as good,All Things Must Pass,Crosby Stills and Nash,Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and your second favorite band Sparks's Propaganda,the only ones here I would rate as excellent are Chaos and Creation In The Backyard and Surfs Up. I looked it up and you got three wrong. But there is always next time. Perhaps you will study harder next time. One can only hope. These egregious errors, at your age. I mean come on, Larry. Are you, or are you not, the studmuffin: eternal embodiment of exemplary perfection?
Mardi Gra's album cover always scared me a bit.

If you look closely, you can see the robot from "The Day The Earth Stood Still" on the album cover, for whatever reason. 😊

I think they look pretty sharp in their fall attire
It isn’t a great album cover but I have a soft spot for it as it was the first album I ever got and it’s my favourite album of all time
