Thanks for the video Fran appreciate you brother!!
Great info, Fran. Thank you!
This is an awesome video format! Just took a virtual training for 8 hrs, instructor had a nice mic and cam, what a great experience and it really helped me to pay attention. I’m just looking for some home office equipment, but these are really expensive. I appreciate your work!
Ah thank you so much, glad you enjoyed
For inexpensive and decent audio quality, look into the Behringer XM8500 microphone. For the price the audio quality will blow your mind

Great stuff straight forward!
This is a really good video - great content and well-produced. Thank you.
Much appreciated! glad you enjoyed it
Awesome! Thanks and HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Happy new year!
Hello. Excellent video, thank you. What are you using for sound output and make sure it does not interfere with the mic? (for video conference)
Super clean video Fran. Great work!
Appreciate it! glad you enjoyed
This video was so on point, thanks for being organized and thorough
Glad you liked it!!
I found this extremely helpful! Thank you so much for sharing. 🙂👍🏼
Glad it was helpful!
Hi! Just finding this video! Thank you so much great info! Did you ever create a part 2 to discuss lighting?
Not yet! having a newborn has def taken away from my youtube creator time but im just getting back into it making content again so I promise real soon!
Very helpful. Thank you!
Great video. So many can benefit from this--especially as many top-tier professionals have moved to work-from-home arrangements through the end of the year. I think it would be great if you'd add to this series, going into detail for the beginners on lighting for these video setups as well. Whether it's finding a window and using that light correctly, to artificial lighting setups for varying budgets, something like this would be a great complement for this video! Thanks again!
Glad you enjoyed the video and yes thank you for the feedback, Ill def plan on taking your advice and go a little more detail into lighting, thanks!
Really helpful and well delivered. Thank You Fran!
Glad it was helpful, thanks!
I was looking for audio solution and your video came at handy, really enjoyed your straighforward explanation and hands on demonstration, thanks a lot! cheers from Brazil
Glad it helped! and thank you !
Franklin, outstanding video! Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for your timely response. Got another question what’s the best most cost efficient way to incorporate my music, do I have to have a “mixer”. Most likely I’ll be using my Mac desktop or my iPad “possibly connected to my Roku tv .” Thanks I appreciate your expertise . I’m a “mature” aged person trying to keep up 😀. ✌🏾
Thank you sir. This is a great overview of the different options available.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you! This was very helpful!! And I love your intro music!!
Glad it was helpful! and glad you enjoyed the music XD
Great on-topic info, you're an easy guy to listen to, (and you make sense.) Got a lot of info from this video. Thank you!
Thank you and glad you enjoyed the video.
Excellent editing to make this video concise.
Much appreciated!
Great video, I needed basic info in plain language to tech language. You nailed it thanks.
thank you !
man u make this stuff so simple, great work!
I appreciate that! thank you
Excellent info! I wish you had talked about your choices in foreground and background lighting. Your setup looks great and it would be great to know about how you achieved that through your lighting choices/technologies.
Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for the feedback, yes for sure part 2 is in the works and I will fully cover lighting.
100% agree with Alvester, whatever you demonstrated as being the best was nowhere near as good as your own setup.
Thanks a lot for this! I was wondering how did you manage to sync the video with the audio when using a mirrorless camera and a capture device (besides using OBS)? The lag between video and audio can be distracting during videoconferences unfortunately
This is awesome, am certainly all in to go for DSLR + Shure setup as yours:), just curious, how would you hide the shure mic on the conference calls in a way that you still sound good without it blocking your camera view?
thanks again, keep up the good work.
You know what, that's a great question, I think a table top stand or the low mount boom arm would do great as well
Love the lighting!💪🏼💪🏼
Thank you !
Really great video especially with the examples of with and without certain options!
Glad it was helpful!
I own a Canon SL2 DSLR, and the EOS Utility application enables me to use it as a webcam. Previously, EOS Utility was used mostly to update firmware, create custom settings, etc., but once COVID hit, Canon enhanced the application to allow for webcam use. Despite that, I still use my Logitech 920 since it can perch right on top of my monitor.
Solids video bro! easy and to the point!
Appreciate it!
Great video, hope you keep grinding and uploading!
Thanks for the good vibes 🙏
Great video with very useful tips! I have been using a Canon DSLR camera as a webcam and the software you mention works well for that purpose. It's a plugin that you download which enables the Canon camera to be recognized as a webcam. Kudos to Canon for releasing that tool. Keep up these useful and high-quality videos!
Thanks for sharing!
Hi. Just saw this video link in the NSA email. Thanks so much for sharing your expertise on this!
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent video! It is so crazy how bad the built-in cameras are in laptops these days. I am excited about Canon cameras now being able to be used as webcams, only wish they came out with that a few years ago.
Thanks man! yea its crazy how much u spend on a macbook to have such a crappy camera, and im thinking about getting a referb M50 just for that webcam feature, hopefully over manufacturers step it up and follow suit
@@FranklinReid_ yea, I’ve been using my m50 mk 2 for live calls for a while now and it’s awesome
Great video, very helpful thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Good basics information, concise and to the point in a time that have an additional 10 minutes of B Roll lol. THANKS
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for this!
If I'm using a Jabra head set with my Macbook pro can I still use the Rode mic for audio without issue? Love the channel just subbed.
you broke it down very well! Great video!
Thanks so much!
Nice direct easy vid! And great setting! Love it. Do you have any videos on your lighting set up?
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video. I don't have a dedicated video on my exact lighting setup but I do have a studio tour in the editing booth right now that shows off my lighting gear if you are interested.
@@FranklinReid_ I was actually thinking the same thing! I loved the video, and wanted to know if you had any lighting info.
You really made this very accessible, thanks!
Awesome, glad you enjoyed
Congrats on 5K btw
thank you!, I wanted to make a video about it but ive been sick recently, as soon as I get back on my feet I got something special in store.
Great video. But what about lighting .. any suggestions ?
Very helpful!
Simple and easy. Thanks
Thanks for liking
Thank you for this. Do you have any other better usb alternative for the logitrch c922?
Dang this channel is going to be big good job man
thanks so much, glad you enjoyed the video.
Great video! I'm in the process of upgrading to a mirrorless camera setup, using a Canon M50 Mark II. One challenge I've experienced with the Canon EOS Webcam Utility software, is that there is a lot of latency. The video using this utility and the audio from my USB mic (Shure MV7) are way out of sync. There are some work arounds and fixes in OBS, etc. and I don't know if this issue is ubiquitous, but it's something to keep in mind for anyone who intends to use the Canon webcam application. From what I've read and seen in reviews, the Elgato Cam Link has minimal latency, so I've ordered one to see how it works out.
Thanks for the the tip, this is great advice around syncing audio.
Nice video!
How does one setup the mic to have super nice sound but WITHOUT having the mic in the picture?
Excellent video, thanks!
Glad you liked it!
hi! Franklin! awesome content, have you tried streaming while using the egpu? in that case, did you noticed a better perfomance with the egpu? I am streaming right now on my 16" macbook pro with OBS on youtube and I have noticed temperatures from 70ºC to 80ºC and just want to konw if an egpu would improve that.
Awesome content, I do not know how many times I have watched your videos 😬
Hey Javier, sorry I missed this comment, something is def wrong with my youtube studio, but we spoke via email ;) so just saying Hi
Great video .. You got a new subscriber!
thanks! welcome to the channel
Great vid! What lighting do you use?
thank you! I normally use a Godox SL60W with a 6 FT dome for nice and soft light,
Great idea about the Canon software update. I'm a Canon user but hadn't heard about this! What kinds of lights are you using in the background on the shelves?
Hey, glad you were able to find something new, so in this video im using two lights, one the GVM RGB LED panel amzn.to/3c2sAxx and the other is some LIFX bulb amzn.to/3ocFTxE hope this helps
Man you are a legend !
heh thanks, glad you enjoyed the video
you saved the day! thank you!
Glad I could help!
Nice video. Consider telling us the focal length, settings and distance from the mirror-less to your face as I'd like to replicate. Thank you.
What mic are you using to record this video? I'm looking for one that I can keep outside the frame, as you have here! Thanks in advance for your help!
Great video. Do you have recommendations for lighting?
Maybe softboxes
Yes I do! i'm actually going to be doing a part 2 just around lighting and also covered this a bit in my youtube studio tour, but def a nice big softbox and a continuous light is your friend
Thanks Fran. Learned what I needed. Subbed. How come your audio levels go up and down with your scenes?
thank you for the sub! yea the levels were a bit all over the place mainly because of the differnt microphones I used in the video and the lack of normalization I did in an effort to show off the differences
@@FranklinReid_ Thank you for taking time to answer.
hi, Great video, very useful.
Can you do one explaining about how you got the background lighting done, and especially how do you slightly blur the background ?
Is it based on the camera.
note, I am not planning to become a youtuber / streamer, just want to look good in online meetings.
Yes for sure, I keep saying this but part 2 is in the works. Im going to go into detail on lighting and camera Bokeh as well so stay tuned.
Great Video, Thankyou.
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks for the video! where is the article, I want to pick the best camera for this purpose
Thank you in advance
thanks, glad you enjoyed it, ah yea I dont have one but thats for the video idea ;)
Hey Franklin,
amazing video thanks for sharing. I have two questions though, I was looking into Roden Procaster and similar mics but you always have to be super near to them. In your examples your mic is seen but in your normal explanation mode it's not. I would prefer not showing my mic. And the second question is on other people talking during a zoom call (through loudspeakers)... won't the mic pic it up?
Hey Thomas, yes that can be an issue specially with a mic like the procaster, theres not much you can do about it, the SM7B has a bit more range, if you want something out of camera tho u might consider looking at a shotgun Mic they have much more range.
As to your second question as long as you are running through the same interface it should be able to reject the audio loop just dont blast the audio and zoom does a great job.
Right on time! 😁🙌
awesome, glad you enjoyed! 🙌🏾
Thanks so much for such a great video! My question is are you able to achieve this without showing the large microphone in the video for your Zoom call?
Hey Keywa, glad you enjoyed the video, yes you can, it just needs something like a boom microphone overhead to be out of sight of the camera.
Best new subscription for me!
Wow thank you, thank you for the sub and welcome to the channel
Great video! One thing you could touch upon is lighting tho!
Thanks for the tip, ill be sure to go over lighting in my next video
You're awesome bro 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
I appreciate that!
Great video bro!
Thank you glad you enjoyed it
Great information.
Could you please clear my doubt, that is what kind of speakers should you use to listen to the other participants properly in a zoom meeting.
And how to avoid feedback/interference of the speakers audio into your microphone.
I mean how to avoid your microphone catching the speaker audio output.
Great question, this is something I will cover in part 2 but honestly, speakers don't matter much, it's more about the volume and the type of microphone you use, if you use a dynamic microphone it won't pick up much on feedback.
What about lighting? Any recommendations?
Beautiful video
great video!
Thanks! glad you enjoyed.
Nice Video! What camera do you use?
thank you, for this video I used the Sony A7III, since they i've moved on look out for part 2 to this guide ill be dropping in a few days
What clip-on mic would you recommend. I want to begin guided meditation sessions and need my voice to sound good, want to sit in relaxed fashion. I also want to incorporate music at the same time.Your video was very helpful.
a great lav mic that I always recommend is the rode smartlav+ great Mic affordable and works with both a smart phone and a regular camera with the TRS adapter
Thanks for the great video. I do have one question, however. Don't we also need a speaker solution to complete a video conference setup? What speakers do you recommend and how do we integrate them with the microphone setup so as not to cause echo during conference calls? Thank you!
Hey thanks for your comment this is a great point that no one has brought up and I didnt even think about. So technically speakers would not be good, headphones would be the prefered solution since you dont have to worry about feedback. But if you must use speakers any pair USB or 3.5 would work find just keep the volume low as thats how you avoid sound feedback
@@FranklinReid_ Hey Franklin, thank you for the video. I'm also curious about which type of speakers should I buy for this setup? I want a studio monitor so I can also use it for video editing but to be honest, my main goal is Zoom calls. Would you suggest a studio monitor, bookshelf speaker or a computer speaker to get clear human voice from other attendees? Thank you in advance.
Hey @Tolga, so ur speaker selection does not really matter but my recommendation would be to get some good monitors, alternatively you can get some ok desktop speakers and pair them with good studio headphones for when ur editing. I always edit with headphones as it gives me more accurate audio editing fidelity.
What’s good, Bro? I hope you’re staying safe. What mic do you recommend for voiceover? I need to upgrade.
Yoooo whats up bro! glad to see your alive and well, ah man voice over? honestly Shure SM7B it's like the perfect mic for everything, slightly cheaper option, id check out the Rode NT-USB mini, I just got that one and it's awesome. Oh and one more the Audio Technica AT875R great all around mic for voice overs and boom audio. Hope this helps
Also, can you tell us what you were using in this video, what cam and mic please? Thanks!
I also show off what camera and microphone I use as well.
Perfect video!
ah, thanks
Excellent video!!!
1.whats the tripod you use for the shure? Or any Arms you recommend?
2. does the shure insulate well against background noise? I had a yeti and oh man it sure had a lot of noise
3. Which tripod do you use for your dslr?
Thank you glad you enjoyed my video, 1. I use the rode PS1 for my SM7B its one of my faves, there are a few tabletop options out there as well but they pick up lots of table bump so I dont recommend them
2. yes the shure does a really good job getting rid of the background noise dynamic mics are awesome for that
I've used a few dif tripods for my Cameras right now I simply use the newerr tabletop tripod, a bit odd I know but works for me :)
Will the mic work for on-air interviews w media outlets?
Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed!
Very well put together!!!!!!! Thank you brother!!! Sub and Like. God bless you brother
thank you! and appreciate the sub brother,
Awesome vid
ah thank you, glad you enjoyed it.
This was a terrific tutorial. I consider myself a fairly advanced user already but I still picked up a few tips. Thanks! Question: if you wanted to make sure that the microphone was not in-frame what would you do? I was thinking that a shotgun-style mic would work OK. A lavaliere might work better but in terms of that rich sound quality lavs have never impressed me.
Hey Jonathan, first off thanks glad you enjoyed the video, and yea I think a shotgun Mic is gonna be ur best bet for rich audio off camera, outside of that the Countryman B3 and B6 are gonna be the best Lavs that i've used that get close to that Boom mic sound quality.
@@FranklinReid_ Thanks, man. I watched your 2020 studio tour right after posting this and saw the Sennheiser MKH-416 you mentioned. I've been experimenting with my simple Rode videomic pro and it's doing a good job so far. It's certainly alienating all of the other people on my zoom calls haha.
Would've liked to seen something about lighting and using backdrop.
Great video. Thank you. Noob question: your audio sounds amazing, but I don’t see that large microphone you demoed when talking about using external microphones to improve the audio quality. What’s the magic trick?
I have the same question here. Shure SM& has a great sound, but it's kinda occupying a lot of scape in front of the camera. What were you using to record this video?
If I had to take a guess he is using a boom mic. It could cost a little as Rode camera boom mic for between $150.00 -$275.00 dollars up to a Sennheiser 416 boom mic for a $1,000 dollars.
Update: I was right. He is using a Sennheiser 416. ua-cam.com/video/jFHQkg9I5dQ/v-deo.html I didn’t want to spend the bread but I might have trade up from my RE27E mic. That Sennheiser is a go to for a lot of creators, they last forever and are can be used in doors or outdoors. Well see
That would be nice to know. I’m also wondering how to hide the mic.
