    Heath I have had previous experience in the propane industry and IF it was me I would move it closer to the buildings. Then when you get ready to set it check with your supplier to see if it will need to be 2 staged to the buildings. Also if you build a set of concrete saddles to set the tank on. Not removing the pump will eliminate removal and make it safer! By then putting a retaining wall around it you wont have to remove any of the skirting. I wouldn't try burying the tank as it wasn't designed to be buried, also this will allow you to reach all fittings. But its good to see you made a good deal & safe trip. High 5's for thinking of the driver delivering your propane with the weather and road conditions. Also you might see with that capacity of getting a bulk rate discount from your supplier! You and Cedar are real life homesteaders! Congrats to you

      There are two tanks plumbed together at a rural house I own. One 1k gal the other 500 gal. We had trouble getting them to work together. Is that common? I've been thinking of buying another 1k gal tank to double up my capacity, but those previous issues have made me reluctant. It's been years, but I think the propane wouldn't flow after the guage reached 50%. It's been a long time. We unhooked the 500 gal tank in 1986.

    • @keithhogan6997
      @keithhogan6997 Рік тому +1

      @RT3 BOX6 TX I would think it has to do with the tanks equalizing themselves. Even if that's not it, personally I would plumb them so I can run the 1k tank as my primary and be able to flip a valve and use the 500 as a backup/secondary.

      @keithhogan6997 Рік тому

      Aside from the propane industry experience, I would set it up the same way as Craig. With enough of a retaining wall you could have a crawl space access to get to anything underneath in the future. I've wanted to have a sizable tank with a pump on it so I can fuel my truck, and other needs, and not have to go into town to do so.

      @Keith Hogan Thanks for addressing my question. At the time we got frustrated and removed the 500 gal tank connection we were dealing with a new propane co that had very recently been heavily schooled by their liability insurance Co. They were paralyzed with fear.
      I reckon we'd need a shut off on both tanks to stop any equalization issue.
      Is there any way the two tanks being connected could result in an imbalance of liquid being in one of the tanks?

    Wouldnt it be better to have both tanks? One as your primary and the other as your back up tank for years such as this when there is absolutely no way any delivery truck will come to your property? Having two tanks also opens up possibilities for future expansion projects on your property as well, just a thought. Either way should make for some cool videos watching you work on this tank and figuring out the new storage locations this spring/summer

  • @danblumel

    I believe if you put it underground you need to think about Cathodic protection, using a sacrificial anode of typically Zinc or Magnesium. All of this will prevent corrosion of the tank, until the sacrificial anode has been consumed, then providing again a new replacement anode. This replacement is typically after some years with inspection once or twice a year of the remaining corroded anode.

    How about pouring some cradles with footings where you place the tank like they use for large propane tanks. Are you planning to be filling smaller portable tanks? Watch the grade and trenches because propane settles in lower areas. You could protect the area around the tank with ecology blocks and cover it with a metal roof to keep it protected from the elements but still leaving it open for ventilation and venting. Good luck with the installation. Cedar is a natural driving the skidstere. You guys are great together.

    The is also a valve on the bottom of the tank. Above the pump that is hanging down in the way. I always removed both you will have to use a crows foot wrench. Then I would close the opening with a forged steel blind flange and a crush gasket. You will have to work with your LP co or find a LP truck rebuilder. Be careful cutting around the tank. Until you make sure there are no leaks.

    • @daversj
      @daversj Рік тому +3

      This giant tank is a folly. Multiple smaller tanks is typical for a reason. Propane just makes you dependent on someone else. He avoids discussing politics but its clear he eats up some of the sky is falling sentiment.
      A better source of backup heat would be a wood boiler somewhere. He has enough property to supply wood. Need more electricity…..add more solar and storage or a wind generator on the hill. Wind generation in combination with solar is ideal. Wind can creat energy all night long. And when the wether is foul and solar isn’t producing its probably windy.
      Air source heat pumps and closed loop geothermal pumps powered by electric are worth considering as well. He has the equipment and space to do a huge closed geothermal system. Newer system don’t use much electric compared to old systems. Plastic pipe is pretty cheap.

    2400 gallons I would put it as far away from the house and lower than your house but still accessible as possible. I believe because of your septic and everything you couldn't put it in your front since propane is heavier than air if it should spring a leak and it was up behind your house all it would take would be a bit of that gas to get in your house around your wood burner or any ignition source. There wouldn't be any red poppy Ranch left. And as it gets colder propane does not flow as well it would be nice to have it insulated.

    Heath how far out from the manufacture date I’d the tank you bought? Many propane delivery companies replace the delivery tanks after 12 years of use because the tanks required to be recertification done on the tanks, that have to be done every 5 years.
    A friend bought one for his survival compound in Oklahoma and converted it into a fixed based tank, and had it plumbed for his compound, the problem came when he went to have it filled, and was told it could not be filled until till he had it hydrostatic tested, because of the age of the tank, which required it to be shipped to a place testing.
    The packing house I worked had 3 of the 2500 gallon propane delivery truck tanks that was modified and was being used as pressure tanks for the compressed air to run the pneumatic equipment in the plant. They bought them from the propane company because it cost to much to have them hydrostatic tested, as pressure tank for compressed air, they did not required to be tested, just epoxy coated to prevent corrosion on the interior.
    Before I do to much work on the tank make sure it can get a recertification

    Did you notice the front looks like it has a face that is smiling 😁. Cedar reminds me of my mom, she could do anything on the farm. Just please be careful 🙏.

    I could just sit and watch for hours the scenery you go through on your journeys Heath, we don’t have anything like that here in England.
    Thank you for another interesting video

      Last video "These lofts and bedrooms are 100% our focus until they're done." Made me laugh! Not complaining though, love all the content, just thought it was funny.

      He’s terrible at focusing. Assuming he has ADHD or is really just that bad at focusing and getting stuff done. The one side of the shop still isn’t sided lol

    Keep the old tank. It’ll be useful if you ever have to transfer a large quantity of propane to do work on the larger one. 🤓💪

    Your firewood pile is looking a little low there Heath, we can see the back wall 😱. Guessing that your next video will be prepping the tank & splitting & stacking firewood 🤭. I've got a tool I want to send you. Picked it up at a yard sale about 15+ years ago, only because it was different & I had no idea what it was used for. It's definitely a hand tool but it's exact purpose remains a mystery to me because of it's tool end. Never seen anything like it before. Thought maybe you could figure it out & she'd some light on it. Have been unable to find a P.O. Box # to send it to you. A little help in that area would be helpful. Have a great day 😊.
