You made such a great point on this topic. Because, I’m 69 so late in the game of getting my wardrobe together, and you are so right about having the basics, with accessories. I feel I’m making mistakes buying stuff that’s not needed or adding to what I already have. Funny that you mentioned folks life situations. Im retired and stay home taking care of my husband who had a stroke, but I don’t look my age nor feel my age and everyone thinks I should down play me. I have been focusing on clothes to wear for home, more to make me feel good. I think they should rise to look their best. Im mainly talking about the 65 and older folks in my community. Just because we have kids..become a grandmother and a great grandmother doesn’t mean we gotta look like Moms Mabley! Live and let live!

Another factor which I've noticed that leads to the situation of having a wardrobe full of clothes but having nothing to wear is that for many people weight fluctuations are very hard to accept. Especially when you need to buy a bigger size than what you're used to, it can make you feel extremely uncomfortable. So a lot of people hold onto clothes they love but don't fit them. Especially women, most of us are guilty of having those "inspiration to get to that size" dresses in our wardrobes

You’re so right about this, that’s why, with a closet full of clothes, we say, we don’t have anything to wear. We just really don’t have enough things we’re comfortable wearing because we’re not dressing our true selves. Be true to who you are today, and always collect a few piece that elevate you and aspire to who you’d like to be. I had to figure out because I love shoes I was collecting them, but many of them didn’t fit my style so they weren’t being worn. It took me a lot of coin to learn this lesson and buy for the real ME. And that doesn’t mean we can’t be fabulous and reach for the high fashion pieces, just not a closet full of the. Learn your style and be true to it. Thanks for sharing, Teacher.

This is such a good video. The point about not dressing for your lifestyle is 💯. I think many people, myself included, get caught up in what influencers are doing versus what we are living. Also, there’s comfort in the dysfunctional. It takes nerve to confront ourselves & say “let’s make a change.” I’ll be using this to reevaluate my wardrobe 😭

This was on point! I need the ebook. And the sweater you are wearing. I’m ashamed at how many times I laughed out oud because you were talking to me. I started getting myself straight though. I definitely still have wayyy too many dream life items that I hardly use. But the closet is big enough to hold them so I can’t let go of my dreams just yet! One thing I added in 2021 that I saw was killing my style was lack of high quality shape wear items. I turned 50 last year and did some purging and repurchasing and upgraded those items as I needed a little snatching in some areas. Certain clothes look so much better too. Thanks for this reminded to get it together as I do a spring closet clean.

I love your videos and keeping it real talk! My thought is SHOES! I think shoes kill a lot of looks. Find a few pairs that really speak to your lifestyle, personality/style, and that are comfortable. Then learn how to best style them. It has completely changed how I choose my clothing, and most of my outfits are ready for whatever comes my way.
I learned my lesson in not dressing for my fantasy life, like, last year. I started putting stuff up on Depop and Poshmark because I had to confront myself for buying (and keeping) things just because I like them, which was such a waste of money. Now I don't have TOO too many things that are a lifestyle mismatch (I'd say probably 10 things or less, including shoes and a coat I kept that're too small) but it's still a huge waste! I stay in my dressy casual lane. I still buy heels, but they're in the three-inch category or lower. If I can't walk in them all day, I don't buy it. If I can't dress it down, I don't buy it. This is the same reason why I kick myself whenever I think about all the makeup I have. I don't have nearly as much as most people (I peeped the collecting habit in 2016 or so), but I still have more than what one can wear before it all goes bad. And where the heck am I going with that cheap and ugly LaFemme blush, Technopagan Lip Tar and kelly green eyeshadow?!

I'm retired now and I keep buying clothes suitable for work. I guess you just get used to a mind set. But you have really made me think about basics and accessories and limiting buying habits. Also I live where the winters are long and sometimes we get a decent spring and sometimes it goes right into very warm winter. Same with fall. Sometimes it is lovely fall weather or it goes right into winter type weather. So I'm always figuring out what to wear because you never know what the weather is going to be but you feel you better be prepared and I end up with too much in my wardrobe that some years I never wear. I think I'm just making excuses for too many clothes lol. on.
So good! Also, not buying the right pieces for your body type. This can be challenging if you don’t know what silhouettes look best on your frame (esp. if you don’t have a flat stomach! Lol)

Folks who buy a lot of outfits are usually folks who say they have nothing to wear because they're not styling their clothing pieces. If one thinks in only outfits, then once the outfit is worn, then the wearer thinks that she can't wear it again since folks have already seen it. Great points Shi, When l started a mentoring program for Girls many years ago we (our mentors team) had a session on appropriate clothing items for specific occasions which turned out to be really fun for our tween mentees. On a similar note many years ago as well, while still working in corporate, one of my coworkers would wear "pretty clothes"vs. office attire...the majority of time she looked like she was going somewhere special such as a wedding or church Tea. One day I asked if she had plans after work and she said "no, I just like dressing like this"...from that point on I'd still complement her cuz she indeed looked pretty...and I kept it moving just as I should.☺️

I had a conversation about handbags with a friend and I told her ‘I don’t have a Hermes lifestyle ‘. That is just my truth and I will continue to admire them from far away while buying items that fit my life . Same with stilettos: gorgeous , but have not bought any in a long time because I found I hardly wore them - so I switched to mules (3.5 in heel height max). The lower heels and more casual look goes a lot more with my style vs stilettos. Ps: just subscribed ;)

I’ve been trying not to fall victim to the fantasy/past life lifestyle mistake. I used to live in Florida, now I live in Colorado and I might make it to the office 1 once a month, and now I’m mommy. I got heels and dresses I’ve never worn, I got to learn to live vicariously through others. Now I just buy accessories bags, belts and jewelry and I get a good rotation. I don’t feel too band dropping the baby off at daycare in YSL earrings or with a Chanel brooch on.

Can I just say how this video resonates with me to my core? I’m also the one who tends to gravitate towards the sundress/floral/feminine silhouette. Luckily, I don’t live in Maine and am in the Carolinas so I get more use out of it but lately, I found that much of my wardrobe did not reflect the reality of my everyday circumstances and simply wasn’t practical as a working mom of 2. I’m working on elevating my personal style, decluttering my wardrobe and getting back to basics. I want to get out of the, “I have so many clothes but don’t know what to wear” to being excited about what’s in my closet! I’m ashamed at how many times I laughed out oud because you were talking to me. I started getting myself straight though. I definitely still have wayyy too many dream life items that I hardly use. But the closet is big enough to hold them so I can’t let go of my dreams just yet!
One thing I added in 2021 that I saw was killing my style was lack of high quality shape wear items. I turned 50 last year and did some purging and repurchasing and upgraded those items as I needed a little snatching in some areas. Certain clothes look so much better too.
Thanks for this reminded to get it together as I do a spring closet clean.

Loved every minute of this and I'm glad that my personality and lifestyle match my closet especially on the weekend lol cause I don't do trends I am a living breathing classic I got this hot pink moschino scarf 5 years ago that still turns heads for the right reasons till this day every designer bag I wear I get compliments same with shoes and less is more simple is stunning i think a lot of people do way too much sis but you made really great points and gave me more validation that I'm on point lol

I love your videos and keeping it real talk! My thought is SHOES! I think shoes kill a lot of looks. Find a few pairs that really speak to your lifestyle, personality/style, and that are comfortable. Then learn how to best style them. It has completely changed how I choose my clothing, and most of my outfits are ready for whatever comes my way.

I learned my lesson in not dressing for my fantasy life, like, last year. I started putting stuff up on Depop and Poshmark because I had to confront myself for buying (and keeping) things just because I like them, which was such a waste of money. Now I don't have TOO too many things that are a lifestyle mismatch (I'd say probably 10 things or less, including shoes and a coat I kept that're too small) but it's still a huge waste! I stay in my dressy casual lane. I still buy heels, but they're in the three-inch category or lower. If I can't walk in them all day, I don't buy it. If I can't dress it down, I don't buy it. This is the same reason why I kick myself whenever I think about all the makeup I have. I don't have nearly as much as most people (I peeped the collecting habit in 2016 or so), but I still have more than what one can wear before it all goes bad. And where the heck am I going with that cheap and ugly LaFemme blush, Technopagan Lip Tar and kelly green eyeshadow?!

I'm retired now and I keep buying clothes suitable for work. I guess you just get used to a mind set. But you have really made me think about basics and accessories and limiting buying habits. Also I live where the winters are long and sometimes we get a decent spring and sometimes it goes right into very warm winter. Same with fall. Sometimes it is lovely fall weather or it goes right into winter type weather. So I'm always figuring out what to wear because you never know what the weather is going to be but you feel you better be prepared and I end up with too much in my wardrobe that some years I never wear. I think I'm just making excuses for too many clothes lol.

Folks who buy a lot of outfits are usually folks who say they have nothing to wear because they're not styling their clothing pieces. If one thinks in only outfits, then once the outfit is worn, then the wearer thinks that she can't wear it again since folks have already seen it. One doesn't fall into that pothole when one knows how to style and restyle pieces.

Great points Shi, When l started a mentoring program for Girls many years ago we (our mentors team) had a session on appropriate clothing items for specific occasions which turned out to be really fun for our tween mentees. On a similar note many years ago as well, while still working in corporate, one of my coworkers would wear "pretty clothes"vs. office attire...the majority of time she looked like she was going somewhere special such as a wedding or church Tea. One day I asked if she had plans after work and she said "no, I just like dressing like this"...from that point on I'd still complement her cuz she indeed looked pretty...and I kept it moving just as I should.☺️

That is just my truth and I will continue to admire them from far away while buying items that fit my life .
Same with stilettos: gorgeous , but have not bought any in a long time because I found I hardly wore them - so I switched to mules (3.5 in heel height max).
The lower heels and more casual look goes a lot more with my style vs stilettos.

I’ve been trying not to fall victim to the fantasy/past life lifestyle mistake. I used to live in Florida, now I live in Colorado and I might make it to the office 1 once a month, and now I’m mommy. I got heels and dresses I’ve never worn, I got to learn to live vicariously through others. Now I just buy accessories bags, belts and jewelry and I get a good rotation. I don’t feel too band dropping the baby off at daycare in YSL earrings or with a Chanel brooch on.
