I've heard several versions of this song and I like Polina's version the best. I realize that Viktor Tsoi is a legend and deserves all the credit for writing this powerful song, but Polina is simply spectacular. Kind of like when Bob Dylan wrote All Along the Watchtower, but Jimi Hendrix took it to a whole new place. Same with Polina and Kukushka.
Cool. I love both Dylan's and Jimi's version.

I've discovered her songs only a few days ago, BUT i could recommend two another performances from this competition: 1. Raindrops & Lullaby (Singer 2019 EP12) 2. The show is over (Singer 2019 EP8). They offer new fascinating sites of her incredible talent. I was hardly surprised in a positive way how versatile she can be.

Hi Danny. This is one of those songs and Paulina is one of those singers that grab you close and don't let go. Both start out competent and then POW!, the song builds and builds and Paulina literally knocks you over with her incredible vocal intensity. Cheers!

As I understand it, "Кукушка" would be pronounced "Kukushka," and the English translation is "Cuckoo" as in the cuckoo bird. Apparently in Russian and/or European folklore, it is believed that the length of the cuckoo's song can predict how long a man has left to live, and the original songwriter, Viktor Tsoi of the band Kino, incorporated this concept into a song about war. Polina covered "Кукушка" for a 2015 Russian-Ukrainian film, Battle For Sevastopol, " a biographical war film about Lyudmila Pavlichenko, a young Soviet woman who joined the Red Army to fight the German invasion of the USSR and became one of the deadliest snipers in World War II" according to Wikipedia. The original version by Kino is a very mellow folk rock song. I absolutely love this song arrangement from the Singer competition.

Only the Kino group wrote not so much about the war, when different people are fighting at the front with weapons in their hands, as about internal problems of any size-inside a person (war with oneself), inside a state (any, anywhere in the world and the time), in any society, in any form - a philosophical sense. The song was slightly reworked for the film, it fit perfectly. Another hidden meaning of "Cuckoo" is the slang name for snipers, they can also calculate the life span in their own way.

Только группа "Кино" писала не столько про войну, когда воюют разные люди на фронте с оружием в руках, сколько о внутренних проблемах любого размера - внутри человека (война с самим собой), внутри государства (любого, в любой точке мира и времени), в любом обществе, в любом виде - философский смысл. Песню немного переделали для фильма, она прекрасно подошла. Ещё один скрытый смысл: слова кукушка - сленговое название снайперов, они тоже могут насчитать срок жизни по-своему.
