    Try egg shells chickens like them

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer

      I typically don't feed egg shells for fear they might develop a taste for their own eggs. What's ur experience?

    • @joeh4295
      @joeh4295 4 роки тому +19

      I dry the shells and crumble them then mix with their scratch. Thee only breed I've found to wear their eggs are Leghorns. My Rhode Islands and Barred Rocks have never eaten their eggs. They need the calcium in their diets.

      Stoney Ridge Farmer you’re supposed to be able to put golf balls in the nesting boxes to help deter them from eating them.

      We leave some free choice ostershell for there calcium needs. Farm supply has a 50# bag for like 7.00 which will last a lifetime.

      For the eggshells my Grannie kept the shells from cooking but would let them dry well, crumble them and then toast them in the oven before putting them out for the chickens. They got the calcium without any fresh egg smell or taste hence no pecked eggs.

    Remember to keep the chicken coop clean. That gives you healthy chickens. Always clean the water containers and give them fresh water every day. Same goes for the feeders. I use to raise chickens and they love egg shells. I would put the shells in the oven and warm them to dry them out. Afterwards I would crumble them up and feed them to the chickens. It provides calcium and other nutrients. Try it.

      That's what I do. Dry them out in oven or in the sun for a few days, then grind it up fine in my food processor or coffee grinder.

      Nature's way of saying green food is bad,and now you are rambling about cows and goats?...I'm sorry but you are clearly making no sense but maybe that is the point that you are attempting here...you are only just saying stupid random things to get a reply back even though its makes you seem silly and an idiot.
      I grew up on a farm and lived a farm life,all green foods are great for you but I think you know that...So are animals as well.Again,I don't think you are truly just ignorant are stupid as you seem to make yourself out to be...you are just being a jerk and saying stupid things because you think it funny and to get a reply back even though its Bad...no more from me though...good luck with that.🐸🌿🌲

    Josh, thanks for the tip. I've used the cage for the cabbage but they were so cheap that they fell apart in no time. This looks like a smart approach that will last. Much cheaper than the over priced cabbage cage. One thing I did though was keep the cabbage a little high to keep them busy trying to get it and not focusing their pecking on other chickens.

  • @john2510

    Clever idea. I've tried that twice now with my girls. They really seem to enjoy it. I used iceberg lettuce, but I hear that's not very nutritious and should be given in moderation because it can cause diarrhea. I'll switch over to cabbage next time, and hope they like it as much.

      funny when I hear folks talking about chickens with diarhea....in my young chicks I'd be concerned...in older birds...just let them eat whatever they'll eat...they know what's good and what's not so good. Try purple cabbage! Colorful fun snack!

    I keep my chicken coop much cleaner than in past by using a poop board. Under my roosts is a board wide enough to be pooped on no matter which way the chicken is pointing. It has 1 bys on the perimeter and the poop board has a mixture of sand, stall deodorizer, and diatomaceous earth. Chicken poops in the sand mixture and can be scooped out with a litter sifter. Coop stays dry and odor free.
    Chickens are usually roosting inside the coop. They like being outside. So the poop is usually under the roosts :)
