The Handsome Family: Gold

After recently recording segments for both Fresh Air with Terry Gross and the Marc Maron podcast, I felt a little guilty asking The Handsome Family to make their way through our very typical Pittsburgh basement and then cramming them into our tiny studio, which happened to be pretty muggy during their visit. Fortunately for us, they were willing to give it a shot and I'm glad that they did, because these songs were a treat to record and mix. This is a band with an obvious and deep connection - fantastic writing and musicianship, all of which is clearly on display on their new album, "Unseen." Really glad they overlooked our warts and made this happen and special thanks goes to Missing Piece Group for setting it up.
We used Peluso Microphone Lab's 2247se to capture Brett's rich baritone and their P-12 for Rennie's sweet and complementary vocals. We used the excellent P-87 on our Vox AC-15 (from our sponsor Empire Music!) to capture lead guitar and the tube-ribbon TR-14 on Brett's Fender amp. Finally, we used Peluso's incredible P-49 as a single drum overhead. That mic is magical on drums and shines in plenty of other applications. Empire Music's Ampeg BA-12 also makes an appearance here, as Rennie's Ukulele bass is played through it.
All audio for Yellow Couch Sessions is recorded and mixed by Steven Foxbury of Yellow Couch Studio. Video for this session was shot and edited by my main man, Matt Dayak.

Pedazo de arte
Just discovered these guys while watching True Detective. Absolutely amazing talent. What a joy to listen to. My new favorite background as I write.
Outstanding performance and some truly fine lead guitar work.
That man's voice is gold.
Great Song Handsome Family. I'm from Brazil
Great song Family, greetings from Brazil
Buffalo Bill Quem disse que brasileiro nâo tem bom gosto? haha
tem br suficiente pra tudo
Got a tattoo of a snake and a ski mask on my face, but I woke up in a ditch behind the Stop 'n Go.
Lying in the weeds with a bullet in my gut, watching dollar bills fly away in the dust.
Now the sun's sinking down, spilling gold on the ground, but I'm going out tonight, out past the last lights of town.
There was a girl with dark eyes and hair shining black.
It ran like a river wild down her back.
But these wide empty streets, the air shaking with heat, they made me hungry, hungry to do something mean.
Now the sun's sinking down, spilling gold on the ground, but I'm going out tonight, out past the last lights of town.
The Stop 'n Go's closed.
The coyotes they moan and the wind's rolling beer cans down the street.
But the sun's sinking down, spilling gold on the
Ground, and I'm going out tonight, out past the last lights of town.
Goddamn they're good
Great. This reminds me of Neal Young - probably similar to some chord sequence and rhythm, coupled with that raw country/rock sound and vocals.
How do you double-like a song?!
I have loved this band since 'In the Air'
this version is better than the original!!
I am so glad you made this happen! Sounds great!. Love this new record!!
i love this song
glory.
Just before they made this video, they gave a great performance at Club Cafe where they opened with this song if I remember correctly. Please come back to Pittsburgh, Handsome Family!
The dogs bollocks as we say in England!
I couldn’t love this more!
Perfect. Amazing song
Linda música. Perfeita.
I just love it... Handsome Family, the best.
Is that guy playing the lead on an accoustic? It sounds awesome.
I was actually playing a borrowed Gibson ES-125 with an old P-90.
Nice, thanks very much for replying! Love the tone, and nice playing too!
Alexander McMahon You nailed it, I've always loved the album version but this beats it.
Alexander McMahon Hey Alex, would you happen to have the tabs or something similar for your part in this song? I’ve tried to learn it to no avail!
Good music! Greetings from Brazil! 🇧🇷
Love them so much octipus first song blew me away
Great song, greetings from Brazil 🇧🇷🇧🇷
Beautiful! Beautiful!...timeless...
Good music!
Friggin awesome 👌
Damares canta bem
fantastic
I don't mean this to sound mean, but is the female vocalist intentionally flat? it kind of clashes with the chord, but I'm not sure if that is by design
it sounds great, not trying to troll
Nathan I think she’s just fucking baked honestly
@@lamshae6070 her harmony notes are spot on, the female vocalist is the lyric writer, she is probably the top lyricist in folk, dark country, goth country, alt country genres, You are so wrong, but you will learn one day, geez, research before you post something this idiotic
Yes. Listen to some Velvet Underground (Moe Tucker), or Beatles (Ringo). That’s the way it is, baby. Just superb.
If you don’t wish to be mean maybe consider that the human element is exactly what makes all these folks love this tune. IMO that’s exactly what’s missing from music these days. No put down here, I wish you all the best.
