    Abandoned & Forgotten Places
Documenting abandoned mines like never before!
Let's take abandoned mine exploring to the next level!
With your support you can help make this the best abandoned mine exploring channel on UA-cam!
Shot entirely in 4K! ...so, turn up those video settings!
On this channel we go deep... REALLY DEEP into abandoned mines and tunnels all throughout the western United States. We researched some of the harder to find mines and hiked or 4x4 back into them to explore and reveal their hidden secrets. Many of these remote locations are filled with cool artifacts, antiques and unique geology that will have you guessing as to why the old prospectors worked so hard to find gold, silver, and other minerals.
A&FP moves just a bit slower as compared to other mine exploring channels. Gly discusses why the miners chose these sites and he points out the geology and minerals that got them excited. Veins of quartz filled with gold and silver made many men lose sleep in the 1800’s and early 1900’s and modern prospecting still does to this very day.
DANGERS? Oh yes, there’s allot of dangers associated with old mines. Un-exploded dynamite, blasting caps, bad air, bats, spiders, and snakes all find their home in abandoned mine shafts and tunnels. Oh, and let’s not forget rotting timbers, flooded passages and collapsing rock!
Gly takes abandoned mine exploring seriously with all the proper safety equipment, training, and experience necessary to do this activity as safe as possible but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a bit of fun along the way. “Gly”, your host and his band of crazy characters “Old Bob” (Gly’s Jeep), “Quackers” (Gly’s duck) and “Bobbie” (Gly’s hula girl) are sure to brighten your day with their comments and silly antics. Heck, they may even give you a chuckle or two.
Just like Saturday morning cartoons before the internet was invented, Abandoned and Forgotten Places uploads each Saturday at 7:00AM PST. (that’s 10:00AM for you eastern folks) so don’t forget to click that subscribe button and bell icon to receive notifications of new episodes!
Please LIKE, SHARE, SUBSCRIBE and COMMENT! All these things help grow our channel and your financial support helps us find new locations and helps put fuel into “Old Bobs” tank. Old Bob, thanks you!
Ok, now for the ugly stuff...

  • @TheArozconpollo

People may not realize this but a mine shaft as shown in this video is literally hanging in place from top to bottom. As Gly mentioned in Episode 16, the 'collar' is the top of the shaft and served an important purpose as the anchor holding the entire shaft beneath. The first section of the shaft was hung from the collar, with each section hanging from the previous all the way to the bottom. The interlocking 'U' bolts that hold everything together can be seen as Gly descends the ladder. The sections were then tightly wedged and blocked into place and lagged if needed. Even when Gly was at the bottom of the chain section, this too was hanging and was not on the very floor (this can be seen in the video). Also note at the bottom of the shaft the miners installed a ore chute, but the shaft was never extended to depth for it to be used. They clearly had expectations of going deeper in this mine.

Awesome Channel. Excellent Crystal Clear HD Quality video. Your Channel is A Breath Of Fresh Air next to most of the other U Tube Channels out there. I know nothing at all about mining , although ive learnt a lot from watching your channel. I just started watching Episode 16 on the off chance of curiosity and was hooked. What I like best is there Is NO Irritating Noisy background music blaring out, No fancy camera work or gimmicks. Its just you and the camera and the natural sound of solitude, very well filmed, crystal clear footage. Also very knowledgeable and obviously experienced narration etc. If only all the other U Tube channels could be the same and as good. Anyway I take my hat off to you, and will gradually watch every episode you have made how ever many, This was the 2nd one so im going to go back and watch No 1 and so forth. Also yours is the first ever U Tube channel I have ever Subscribed to, and ive watched thousands of different ones over at least 10 yrs, which says how much I appreciate the fact that theres NO Noisy music, just straight talking clear footage. Thankyou and stay safe.

“Gly”: Thank you very much! I started this channel back in February of 2019 and my goal was to improve on areas of abandoned mine exploring where other mine exploring channels were falling short. If you begin watching episode 1 and move forward you will see a clear evolution of the channel. Like with everything else, some ideas work and some ideas don’t but with the input of my subscribers I’ve been able to hone the channel into what you see today. Over the last year I’ve tried many different camera shooting styles and the one the audience seems to enjoy the most is the “first person view”. I’m really happy your enjoying the channel and I look forward to taking you to many more interesting places. Take care, and thank you for subscribing!

Gly - you picked a good shaft to descend! That has got to be the most heavily timbered vertical shaft I have ever seen! Somebody spent a lot of time and money building it. By the way, I must say I like the image clarity of your helmet cam better than I do your "better" camera. The color tones from your helmet cam are a bit cooler, perhaps, but it doesn't loose detail in the brightly illuminated areas, like your "better" camera does. With that said, the mineralization in this mine is fantastic! Something tells me if you were to shine a UV flashlight on those areas where the crystals are growing on the walls of the passage, the result would be spectacular! Can you make a guess at what they were mining out of that vein at 43:36? Gold? Silver? That rock looks like it's chock full of something! One last question: Why do you suppose somebody threw a flat-screen television down a vertical shaft? Got tired of watching Dr. Phil, maybe? Great video, Gly! Congrats on making it all the way down that shaft. That took guts!

“Gly”: Funny you should notice because I noticed that myself after editing this episode. The helmet cam is running 4K at 30FPS but the fancy rig cam is running 4K at 60FPS. I think that by running a high FPS for inside shots I’m loosing some of the rock detail.
After doing some research I learned that the areas with all the white crystals coming out of the rock is high in Zinc. The vein you pointed out is definitely laden with gold and silver and it’s the hydrothermal “root” of the Limonite formations that exist topside.
I’m not sure about the flatscreen but did you notice the kitchen sink? I guess you could say this mine had it all including the kitchen sink. Lol

First off, thank you for sharing these awesome explorations. I find this far more entertaining than most TV.
    Questions/Requests:
    1. Often when you are walking along a drift, the walls are covered with amazing colors and/or crystallizations. I would love to hear more about the minerals that produce all these colors. Any extra info about the geology would also be welcome: sometimes we see solid rock, sometimes we see some breccia-like stuff that looks like it would crumble if you touch it.
    2. Also when walking down a drift, you often comment about its size, but it is difficult - when viewing the video without visual, contextual clues - to appreciate or understand the scale of what we are seeing. I don't know how to "fix" this, but I'm imagining something like a small, one-foot "scale stick" that folds out from your walking stick that could occasionally be held up against the wall to allow us to somewhat better perceive the scale. Of course, some drifts still have the ore cart rails, but I don't even know the gauge of these rails so even when the rails are present, I'm not sure if I'm seeing a 3 foot wide drift or a 5 foot wide drift.
Love the videos, my questions/requests are simply because I want even more info, not because I am disappointed.

“Gly”: I’ve been experimenting with may things since starting this channel to see how people respond. Some like the exploring part while others like the scenery. Others like geology while others like the artifacts. So what I’ve been trying to do in my most recent videos is to incorporate an healthy blend of all of the above to keep the channel more well rounded and appealing to a wider audience. I absolutely love geology and I could very easily nerd out on some of the things I find but that would be a put off to some of my subscribers. So, when it comes to geology if I see something really significant I’ll be sure to point it out.
Regard scale. Yes, this is always a problem when filming these areas. Recently I’ve been collaborating with Frank from Exploring Abandoned Mines and having him in front of the camera has helped with this problem allot. Unless I can put myself in front of the camera from time to time this will always be a nagging issue when solo exploring.
Thanks for watching! I’m really happy your enjoying the show!

Smallest width is 18 inches, watching the videos you'll notice when they get wider like for the big bottom of the mine haulage tracks, standard is 46 inches apart and a heavier rail.

Gly, I know this is a lot more work for y’all, but I might have a solution for at least the geology geeks. I know you said you are going for a more well rounded video to appeal to the most subs. What if you filmed these aforementioned segments with you nerding out on the geology (which I personally would LOVE to see), but edit them out of the ‘general explore’ video for the location. You can patch all of the geology edits together for the location and name them accordingly. That way the folks that aren’t interested can just skip it and us geology hounds can tune in excitedly!! 🤣

That was pretty cool. It's not often we get to see what's been tossed into the sump of a shaft that deep. Really appreciate you going to that effort. Is that an elevator car at the top of the shaft? I could see where the brakes had bit into the verticle rails at a couple of levels. That doesn't mean the cable parted, the car just bounced a bit when it came to a stop far down. Mines as dry as this one is a rarity in mines out away from the desert. The disadvantage of that is the wood boxes with the fancy dovetail joins are replaced by cardboard which just isn't collectible but I'll take the moisture free mines. When I was exploring in Colorado there were many feet of soil overburden that collected rain and snowmelt and would distribute that moisture non-stop into every mine I entered. To make sure I was totally miserable a rockfall from the back would form a damn to make sure the water was over the top of my boots. Your lighting is really great. It really adds to your exploration. Thanks for sharing.

Wow, that's great to have a compressor pipe for an extra stable handhold. The stoped out area on level 100 looks intriguing but I'd bring descending equipment to go in there and I also might knock loose some of the hangers at the entry point. A rope ladder would be a good choice. The grizzly and ore track looked solid there on the 200 level. There is a real zinc snowstorm there as well. The sloughed area was just a bit sketchy. That's nice gobbing on the East drift. On the 300 level, that' a good looking vein they could have worked. Now that prices are back up, would you think it would be profitable? Great Video and great tour !!!

The bureau of mines admitted they don't have the man power or money. They concentrate on mines near inhabited areas. What this guy is doing is just short of attempted suicide but it does make for exciting videos. My father was a drilling and blasting engineer and took me along on some assignments. Gold mines tended to be deep shafts or tunnels dug into the base of a hill or mountain, these are called 'coyotes' in the drilling and blasting business. They tend to be the most dangerous especially in earth quake zones. These are small operations and not real safety conscious.
