Yes a Spanish millionaire who was reportedly drunk while in charge of his boat and in an area that was out of bounds to boats. one One of his employees took the rap and the man with the money walks away scot free
When this song was released, I was actually working down the chip shop aged 17, but I definitely wasn't Elvis. I bought this single as I loved this song. Kirsty was magnificent. God bless her.
Perhaps if Kirsty had frequented your chippie, the song might have been called "There's a Guy Works Down the Chip Shop Swears He's Not Elvis" with a chorus including "But he's a star and I'm not sure that's true."... 😹
And that the person who DID murder her didn't serve a day. He paid a servant to basically spend a couple of days in jail and pay an astonishingly small fine.
Love this song. I Iived in Mill Hill in the late 1970s and there was a bloke who worked in a chippy in either Mill Hill or Finchley that was a big Elvis fan and dressed and wore his hair like him. As a big Beatles fan, we did a swap, I gave him a Memphis newspaper printed the day Elvis died and he gave me a Beatles record. When Kirsty brought this song out , I was convinced it must have been written about this guy in the north London chippy!.
As a young man, just out of high school, before college, I worked as a deckhand on a tugboat, we were in Memphis and the supply boat brought out our stores, and a newspaper with the news of Elvis' passing.
I worked construction in the 80s and the plumbers used to be dancing around the job when this song came on the radio. Every one of them wanted to be the guy in the chip shop!
No, I can't let it go..Most condescending, patronising, overbearing, demotivating interview I ever saw before an artist had to perform. Kirsty rising above it and owning the stage says everything about her - Superstar!
I would have to say that this is one of the greatest pop songs ever written . Not just the singing and catchy tune , but such clever irony of the lyrics . Young girls that went into pubs and nightclubs ( in 1981 ) being ' duped ' by cheesy chat up lines , bagging about themselves to try and showing off in general . ps I should point out I am a male posting this . Thank you for the upload , and thinking of you Kirsty x .
The guy she is singing about lives in Nunhead in South London and he is half Jamaican, half Irish. he is currently 64 years old. Kirsty used to live there many years ago just before she started becoming famous. She was a great talent and so sad she passed so tragically.
Kirsty was one of the boys with a wickedly funny sense of humour, a completely effortless singing talent with the ability to sniff out even the tiniest bit of bullshit, fiercely independent who did not suffer fools but had a fabulous generosity of spirit and will to succeed, a very special talent taken from us way too early RIP
@steelblue58, I follow a brilliant woman y/t & she connects all kinds of dots. A while back she spoke pedos and human trafficking rings down there & as soon as she (Amazing Polly) mentioned it, I thought of Kirsty & what did she know? From what I have learned about Kirsty, is that was an avid diver & excellent swimmer. It's utterly tragic that no one was held accountable for her death. I often think of her children & how they are getting along without her. Truly One of the Greatest Artists. God Rest her Soul🙏➕🙏
@@phillyirishlass6513 Someone was held accountable for her death, it was just the wrong guy. Gonzalez paid a deck hand named Jose Cen Yam to take the fall for him. He confessed to driving the boat (despite the testimony of eye witnesses and the fact that he had never driven the boat before), served some time in prison, and had to pay "reparations" to the family based on his wages. Of course, his wages were next to nothing. Also, Gonzalez had been drinking and would have been charged with much more than the negligent homicide charge that Cen Yam took. All to protect the billionaire.
Ace lyrics and great singer. Truly one of the greats in music history and so was Elvis. RIP, Elvis and Kirsty. We lost you two way too early. Your music will continue to live on.
It sounds like she's got a country twang going with her voice. This is the first time I've heard her sing one of her own songs. Damn good. I remember hearing she died. ☹️
yep in the sea with her children, some rich tosser ran her down in his power boatm she pushed her child out the way, and was nearly cut in half, he never got charged as he said he was not driving the boat
@John Perry. Sir, you may already know this. If you can find the original 7 inch 45rpm single Kirsty recorded a "country" version of this song for the "B"- side. Well worth looking for just to hear what you are familiar with being taken somewhere else. Thank you for all of the fabulous music you left us Kirsty McColl. So sad that your life was ended well before it's time. RIP ma'am.
My goodness, the host is so condescending, but Kirsty took it in her stride. Fancy being sandwiched between her dad's legacy and the Bond films! Amazing lady.
I have always loved you Kirsty and was utterly devastated when I heard the terrible news. Every English-speaking person in the world should own 'Kite'; it is genius, right there.
They were both going their separate ways. She said that she was writing a song but would not say what it was. She sent him the tape with lyrics and he read it especially the line about he is a liar and I am not sure about you. He knew how she felt.
Back in the 1970s the UK govt were having a campaign against drink driving. This presenter was on a show called "Pebble Mill at One" and as part of that campaign he drank six whiskies on camera and then they let him drive round the car park to prove that drinking affects your driving. I was at home sick from school when that went out, and have never forgot it.

What a great clip, especially the little interview before the performance! I don't think I've ever seen any interviews with Kirsty discussing her dad and his career! Love Kirsty. What a loss she was. Thanks for uploading!
And quite gracious as well, coz the interviewers' fave song by her father, happens to be the one written for the woman her dad left her mum for - at a time when they were still married. But no twitch to be seen when he mentions that, except may be, her fave song by her old man happens to be a totally different one. Tops !
it hurts to see this, she's been gone so long. and yes, its not cos she died, its not cos she was old - she wasnt - its exactly like everyone says. Its cos of how she died. I am glad we have these songs, this one is so good
Absolute legend.
So sad the way she was killed and the bastards got away.

So young here and such a talent. Sad that her life came to an abrupt end.
