About a dozen years ago my father asked a priest if our dogs go to heaven. He simply said "how can it be heaven without your dogs"

You're ignoring the fact that animals suffer, and suffering is never meaningless. Second, you have no way of knowing that animals have no rational capacity. They have performed altruistic acts. Third, being of a lower order does not preclude eternal life. So maybe they would still be on a lower order in heaven but still enjoy eternal happiness on that level!

Thanks for the podcast. My dog passed away a couple months ago. I was heartbroken. When family members have passed away, I grieved but my grief was mitigated by the knowledge they were in a better place and I would see them again. Not knowing if I would see my dog again, seemed to make the loss harder to bear. I think the podcast touched on lasting relationships and that offers hope that these relationships, and the partners in that relationship, will continue to exist. This is what I have pondered: God is love and we are products of God's love. Like God's love is everlasting, I think our love is also everlasting as long as we don't love the wrong things or love the right things in the wrong way. If this "right" love is everlasting, than the object of that love must also be everlasting. So I think the love and relationship we have for our pets, in a sense, gives immortality to them ... maybe.

The St. Bernard hospitality talk got me. My dad used to talk about the St. Bernard he had as a kid who would lay under the table, then get up and walk away... with the table on its back. Talk about service.

Thanks for this discussion. I once asked a priest/philosopher, by the name of Fr. Vincent Miceli, about whether or not our pets will be with us in Heaven and he replied that although the essential happiness of heaven is the Beatific Vision of God, that God will fill us to overflowing with that which gave us joy and since animals are innocent, God may very well surprise us with our beloved furry companions in some way. "Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, what God has prepared for those who love Him...." In Christ, all things are made new. "Oh death, where if your victory? Where is your sting?" If Christ conquered death for us, why not for all creation?

I recently lost my beloved dog at 12.5. He was part of our family since he was 8 weeks old. These companionships are no less meaningful and lasting than human companionship and I would be devastated to think I would not one day have the chance to scratch behind his ears.

We just lost our beloved German Shepherd Rusty (our 'Big Bear') over the weekend. He was such a huge part of the soundtrack that played in our daily lives. He was my sons' favorite playmate, our protector, and very best friend. There has been a great empty void in our home since he passed and my wife and I have spent a lot of time in prayer asking God to heal our hearts and keep our boy for us. I personally asked for God to let me know Rusty was okay as the pain I feel is great.
I was at a pretty low moment this morning thinking about what happened when this podcast link arrived in my email inbox. I really thank you for exploring this topic. I feel a great comfort and that God has answered my prayers of asking to know Rusty was okay. Reminded me of Matthew 7:7-8, "For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened."

Thanks for another great show. I am not a Catholic expert or a religious expert, but I have been Catholic since I was baptized a week after my birth. I work with animals every day being a veterinary assistant and I been taught by Catholic church and I believe God created everything, and every living thing God created is pleasing to him. that being said when the world ends God will create a new heaven on earth with all living things and yes dogs will be there!

My Bichon was my true and perfect love He protected , and was always ready to go for a walk or a ride,he was my Special little love. We were together for over 15 years. I miss him so much, i ask our Lord, to watch over him i my prayers everyday.

I get that animals don't have rational souls, meaning they don't have free will, meaning they cannot sin (even if they know they're doing something that will tick us off, they can only follow their own nature), meaning they cannot *merit* heaven. I'm taking a different angle from yours, because I don't have a pony in this race. That is, I don't require reunion with my pets "on the other side of the rainbow bridge" in order to be perfectly happy. And I've got to mention that way back in the early 1970s when I was about 9 or 10, there was a nun on some weekend talk show insisting animals have souls that go to heaven. I remember looking to my dad for direction because that was a new one to me. I hadn't thought to question it before. Dad basically said the Bible doesn't tell us directly, so we'll find out when we get to heaven. Whatever the nun said was way over my head. Whatever happens to animals' souls after death doesn't affect my opinion of God one way or the other. I really like what the Catechism says, though:
2416 Animals are God's creatures. He surrounds them with his providential care. By their mere existence they bless him and give him glory.(Mt 6: 26; Dan 3: 79-81). Thus men owe them kindness. We should recall the gentleness with which saints like St. Francis of Assisi or St. Philip Neri treated animals.
2417 God entrusted animals to the stewardship of those whom he created in his own image.(Gen 2:19-20; 9:1-4). Hence it is legitimate to use animals for food and clothing. They may be domesticated to help man in his work and leisure. Medical and scientific experimentation on animals is a morally acceptable practice if it remains within reasonable limits and contributes to caring for or saving human lives.
2418 It is contrary to human dignity to cause animals to suffer or die needlessly. It is likewise unworthy to spend money on them that should as a priority go to the relief of human misery. One can love animals; one should not direct to them the affection due only to persons.
And from the Prayer of St. Basil: "May we realize that [animals] live, not for us alone, but for themselves and for Thee, and that they have the sweetness of life."
Pope St. John-Paul II and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, and others, have said that animals have a "mortal soul," as opposed to the immortal soul that humans have, which suggests that when animals die, their souls no longer exist. Or it may suggest that they are only aware and conscious when their bodies are alive, but this latter possibility doesn't rule out their resurrection at the end of time, when (after) the mortal bodies of humans are raised from the dead.
I kind of think that justice demands that animals who suffered because of Adam's sin, and who are aware of their suffering (they feel pain, thirst and hunger), should be raised again on the last day. There's a Jewish teaching that plants and animals are assigned suffering in sacrifice on our behalf, to atone for our sin, in payment of justice to God. They don't (because they can't) willingly choose suffering, but they accept it and continue to bless God. They can't freely offer it, but God the Father freely accepts it. He doesn't assign them merit because they're not going beyond what they were created to be, but He blesses them because they are completely innocent. Even the bitey beagle Bailey and the dachshund.

Oh I loved this, in the past my sister had a gorgeoous miniature poodle he was a lovely intelligent dog she has had others since. I had a white West Highland terrier she was sweet but not bothered about cuddles and preffered walks with more than one human. My present dog is the opposite he is an attention seeker and is quite happy walking with just one person. While I've been watching the Catholic Talk Show he is lying on the sofa and having a few dreams. I've had him since 2020, was a rescue dog as a puppy and lived in kennels outside. Previoue owner rescued dogs but this little fellow didn't get on with the other dogs. Apart from the little girl dog next door. He was socialised with her a week after he arrived. Daisy also a rescue but much younger dog is friendly with all dogs. My little whisky is a sort of Jack Russel Terrier plus? Is deeply in love with Daisy, he stands at the back garden gate and cries for her.
Question So if dogs can have those sort of feelings why wouldn't they be allowed in Heaven?

Good podcast guy's. My family recently lost our beloved Josie whom we rescued years ago. Over the years she had various illnesses, and other mishaps. She was the most loyal friend, companion. Our church would have the blessing of the animals. Each time if our beloved Josie was sick, and a couple of times we almost lost her. But when she was sick and vet couldn't figure things out we had her blessed and she was healed shocking the vet. Well recently she had major cancer which spread. Vet said she would live only 2 months tops. We prayed and had her blessed. Two years later she finally passed away. The last thing she wanted was holy water to drink. She knew and wouldn't touch anything else but holy water to drink. We were going to have her buried in pet cemetery. Well couple days ago the place that was going to bury her burned down. The owner called and said that everything was destroyed. I asked about our Josie. The owner said that the fire stopped 30 feet from where they had her laying. The firefighters couldn't explain why the fire just suddenly stopped. I want to believe it was God's intervention. And I know God says all of his creations will be in heaven...great show guys

Until the morning my son came to the bathroom door and said, "Did Bootsie go to heaven Mom?" I would have said no. I never wanted to give any false doctrine to my children but that day I said, "Yes." Some years later when considering the reason there is death, I became convinced Jesus Christ has COMPLETE VICTORY OVER DEATH. Without sin no creature would have ever died.

One question asked was “Do dogs need redemption?” I propose that they do not so there is an even greater possibility that in there complete innocence God would grant them eternal happiness. Pope Francis once told a young girl who asked him about this possibility. She was grieving about the loss of her dog and asked if she would see him again in Heaven. He responded that he could not see how God would give us these animals for companionship and happiness and take them away in our eternal home. I so look forward to reuniting with my pups. Our neighbor gave us this book and it helped me greatly after our recent loss.

I ENJOY this podcast. Recently started watching a few months ago, and I am catching up on previous episodes, which I thoroughly enjoy. However, in this episode, I have to disagree with you. I currently have a sweet dog who does not bite. He is a dachshund named Milo. Some dogs are vicious, and some dogs are not. Just like people. Also, if dogs don't have a soul, why are they assigned St. Roch as their Patron Saint?
Also, Milo says daily prayers with me...just sayin'! Keep up the good work. You are truly a Disciple of Christ.

Father Rich seems to be really empathetic and kind in regards to animals! I love dogs! This topic has worried me for a long time as the catholic teachings on animals and dogs isn't that great for animal lovers. From what I can see dogs teach us a lot about God's and Jesus teachings. From my dog I have learned how to be forgiving and selfless, as well as receiving an unconditional love. I also believe what St Francis and St John Bosco say, that the mere existence of animals shows they give glory to God. In Genesis it says man will have dominion over animals and must care for them.

Here is what Fr. Chad Ripperger said about the topic... "You know once in a while people will ask me, 'Is my dog fluffy going to be in Heaven?' and I usually tell people, 'Yeah, he is. but he's not going to exist in Heaven'. but when you see God face to face you'll see the entire life of fluffy in it. so yeah, in a certain sense he's there because you'll get to see em anytime you want to think about em. you see him in God, it's like watching a much realer movie, it's much more real when we see it in God than it is if we actually experience the dog physically. so you won't actually have a need or a desire to have the dog physically here." ; source = 'Four Last Things: Heaven' audio clip between 26min and 26min43sec.
personally I hope to see my dogs in Heaven. but either way, everything is going to be okay ;) ; for the record... beagles are hands down my favorite dog, although I do like some others like labs etc. I like dogs in general but some definitely more than others. typically the more lovable/caring kind which is why I like beagles so much.

🤣 I have a dachshund and he is the sweetest dog. He wouldn't bite anyone. Dogs are a gift from God we need to know the breed. Worker dogs need a lot of exercise including dachshunds. All living creatures are Gods creation. They may not have souls but maybe they do have a place in heaven 🤔.

Dogs are the only animal (including some humans) who loves you more than he loves himself...isn't that the way we are asked to be...maybe a prefigurement of Jesus (not to be disrespectful. )
It is said the the Hound of Heaven is actually Snoopy 😆 LOL

This is at least two guys one being the priest that has no clue about dogs. They do not project any type of love for animals. This is a non credit talking point for these guys. Why talk on a subject you have no experience with.

Will you see your pets again?
    Mabey.. In Heaven..
Will you be going to Heaven? That is the question..
How long will you be in Purgatory?
Will you be thinking of your Dog in Purgatory? NO
Animals do not go to heaven. Can they be RE Given as gifts to us IF and WHEN we get there? Of course God gave them to you once already on this horrible side of life so he surely can fulfill your desire to be with them again.
Will you want to see your Dog again while immersed in the beatific vision praising God for all eternity with all the Angels an Saints in one unending hymn of Praise HOLY HOLY HOLY!!?? Probably not.
People use the word Heaven but I dont think it means what they think it means. To Love, desire and worship God will all your being and have NO attachments. Mothers are in heaven with sons in hell. Sons are in heaven with mothers in hell etc. They are in complete joy knowing this.. My bet is you will not desire your animals at all and God will be your ultimate desire for all eternity.

What a shallow stupid argument on the part of Ryan Scheel. Theological opinion is not doctrine. A more sensible place to start would be to recognize that animals suffer, and suffering is never meaningless. The suffering of animals can not be disconnected from the salvational mission of God.

It’s sad we live in a Society where people literally value Animals over Human life. Also, prefer to Dogs/Cats/ Etc as there babies... what an insult to parenthood & God.
Reading these Comments confirms the more about what I have said... smh
