After it was featured in the popular film Top Gun, the F-14 Tomcat grew to international fame as one of the most recognizable fighter jets in American history. The F-14 Tomcat was designed during the Cold War to help defend carrier-based operations against Soviet-built MiG fighter jets and was capable of flying more than twice the speed of sound. The F-14’s advanced weapons system could track 24 hostiles and attack six targets simultaneously using the AIM-54 Phoenix missile.

Much like the GAU-8 cannon on the A-10, the AIM-54 was THE weapon on the F-14. They probably did not do every hop with them but it was why the plane existed. Very cool guys! Keep 'em coming!
You'd be correct in saying they didnt do every sortie with them. For example close in CAP was typically done with either 6x Sparrows and 2x sidewinders or 4x sparrows and 4x sidewinders. Recon missions were typically done with only 2 sidewinders, the Expanded Countermeasures adapter, the AN/ALQ-167 ECM pod, and the TARPS pod. The recon loadout could also have a pair of bombs added too like the time when 2 VF-2 Bounty Hunters F-14Ds bombed Saddam Hussein's personal yacht while on a TARPS recon mission.

@@damascussteel2872 I don’t know if single gun can cause recoil to completely obliterate the airframe of a whole Northrop Grumman F-14 Tomcat Air Superiority Interceptor, weighing 18,190KG plus weapons like the AIM-54 Phoenix Missile. Otherwise the aircraft would have an extraordinarily flawed design to cause such event.

Another dogfight the Tomcat was involved in was in 1987. Under Ronald Reagan. While on a standard tour of duty. The Aircraft Carrier John F Kennedy was on patrol heading to Isreal for port call. 2 Mig 23 Floggers where picked up 120 miles away by E2 hawkeyes. 2 Tomcats on patrol went to scare them off becuz they where getting to close to the carrier...the 2 Migs tried to engage the Tomcats. Which turned out to be a deadly idea. Like its Air Force counter part the F15 Eagle,.no Tomcat was lost in direct air battle. Many times the Tomcat went up against Libyan Migs usually outnumbered 2 or 3 to 1....as soon as the Tomcats engaged the Migs would run away.

To think the marine corps almost adopted the F14 over the AV8B, and they even had a navy squadron of marine corps F14 pilots as the training was already done when they ordered the Harrier instead. Interesting bit of history I learned about it when I saw the new kit

The F-14 was developed during the Vietnam war and actually took part in Operation Frequent Wind.
The F-14s true top speed isnt known either. In testing they only brought it up to Mach 2.34 since that was the specification put out by the military for its new fighter, and publicly its never been brought back out to see how much farther it can go.
Speedbrakes are for slowing down when the aircraft is going at a high enough speed for them to be effective, not just for runways. On the ground when the speedbrakes arent effective anymore the wheelbrakes are used.
There are 4 arrestor cables (referred to as wires by pilots) with a 5th backup if one breaks.
The 6 pack loadout, as the 6 phoenix missiles on all phoenix capable stations loadout is referred to, didn't cause damage to the airframe. It caused damage to the wing glove stations, but only on carrier landings. On a runway landing you could have the missiles on those stations perfectly fine, just the stress of a carrier landing combined with the weight of the phoenix caused unnecessary metal fatigue on the wing glove stations.
So glad I managed to grab one!

I had to buy this 2nd hand recently and it is awesome! I would have rather given my money directly to brickmania but it just isn't available now. Maybe you guys could do an "as stocked" option for us faithful to be fulfilled once a year (maybe without box)? I'm only an option away from just getting these via bricklink or even non-lego options at this point...
F-14 Tomcat is a registered trademark and we're not going to make more unless we can get official permission. We will of course make more once that can be obtained.

@@brickmaniatoys Would love to see this restocked too! Although I'm Air Force and prefer USAF jets, my uncle worked for Northrop Grumman during the 80's/90's while I was growing up and still does. The F-14 Tomcat in Jolly Roger colors is such an iconic jet!
