Impressive performance! It's remarkable how a pianist, with only three years of training and no prior experience playing with an orchestra on the stage (as mentioned in a 2011 interview with Dang), could claim the first prize. How colorful it is --- his high notes are just as beautiful as the moonlight.
I appreciate Bill N T, making Dang Thai Son`s historical performance available, for us and for the future generations. My piano teacher attended Master class taught by Dong Thai Son
I think Pogorelich (if he was qualified) was also about to play the second piano concerto. But who cares, he made in 1983 an excellent DG recording of this concerto with Claudio Abbado (and the polonaise Op.44). As about Dang thai Son... very beautiful playing, I am impressed.

It is quite interesting to note that Argerich actually made the beautiful gesture, once she returned home to Geneva and learned of the results of the competition, of sending a public telegram to the Warsaw competition committee, congratulating Son.
Highest degree of that which Chopin imparted to his students, la souplesse, cantabile and convincing rubato. One of my teachers, also from the imperial Russian school, Rosina Lhévinne would have been delighted to see his wonderful wrist....well....l souplesse!
Isn’t it just as interesting that some pianist and his supporters took advantage of, in the 1980 Competition, a "scandal" to launch his career and to overshadow Son. It appears as ironically that his fame was boosted by his elimination😊
