New guy here, as a pet owner not a breeder. You are so right, all these names have my head spinning and it can be overwhelming.
I agree 100%. I think Morph Market has the power to make this happen for the hobby. They could start by simply removing “Coral Glow” from their list of traits. New listings would be forced to use Banana. I think pretty quickly the rest of the hobby would follow suit.
morph market has some terrifying clauses in their TOS , "can ban any user at any time for no reason without notice" I read where a user got banned for something on their social media, not even on morph market, they policed his instagram for something not even related to the website ... I would be incredibly weary about spending lots of labor hours uploading inventory into Morph market, compared to husbandry pro or your own website. As morph market website doesn't really have any sort of protections in place, they don't even escrow funds so they can do as little as possible and get paid for it. Also, not to mention, the buyer pool is very soft on that website, its primarily sellers, the buyer/seller ratio is off and theres no actual vetting process, anyone with an id and camera can sell animals, thats terrifying, and im 100% not sure how it passed regulations in its current state

MorphMarket don’t even list things correctly. They have spider gene warning on some things from the complex but not the top selling genes like spotnose.
Chemist here. There is plenty of space for having two names: "Common name" for a substance, and "chemical name." Some substances are more likely to be encountered by the common name, and others by the chemical name. Yes, the common names are easier to use. It's why they persist. Chemical names may be more descriptive, but more cumbersome to use and more confusing, (in chemicals, probably easier to mis-read than snakes.)
Honestly I like the nicknames myself. the problem I have are the people naming new morphs. People have no imagination. Thats why we now have like 4 genes with the "Xtreme" name or reference. Its really getting kinda stupid. and its not even a case of them not knowing it existed. Like this new "Xtremist" gene. Like really? You couldn't come up with any other name than that? Come on people!
Rants aside, the Names do get ridiculous. The Combos just make things worse... like the difference between Pre Algebra and Algebra. LOL

I think we should pick the name that best describes the look of the snake. Like butter and banana for example are perfect names for the appearance of the snake. Whereas Lesser doesnt say anything about how it looks. And coral glow could be anything. I actually think it sounds like something pink, not yellow. Enhancer perfectly describes what it does.. Just common sense
Lesser comes from lesser platinum which i think was a break off of the original “platinum” import animal from nerd. So lesser platinum was the lesser animal visually and actually a decent description at the time but now we are so far from the original that we dropped the platinum part of the name and it’s lost its origin. Butter is a better name but lesser is the original name.

I personally think that we need to label recessives at the end.
It seams easier to label the singles, then the visual recessive then end it with hets because they are bonus genes that you can’t usually see so they kind of don’t matter unless you are breeding.

Ghost/hypo to name an other. But one of the worst one I really get annoyed about is het red axanthic. I have several of them and really like the gene but every time I try to sell them I have to start explaining it is not het axanthic, or even a recessive gene but incomplete dominant and then don't even start about the other names like green pastel, genetic blackback ect ect
The other monsoon is moray, it popped up in the collection of Ires reptiles, the ones who also found the stranger. The later on discovered it was the same as monsoon but they didn't know that when the saw it first.
I agree, however I tend to use the naming convention of homozygous incomplete dominant followed by heterozygous incomplete dominant followed by recessive homozygous and then recessive heterozygous.
That was confusing but I think I agree. In order: Super/single/recessive/het. Outside of that should allelics be added or should it just be up to the consumer?
How do we label Cryptons? Do we just say double het? Or is it technically a recessive?
@@lanedj801 For me personally, I would definitely use the given name for allelic recessives (candino, toffino, crypton). I think it’s harder to make that decision for allelic incomplete dominant combos. It would depend on the name I were using, if you’re just saying the two morphs (ex chocolate spotnose) I would put it with the singles. For combos with established names I might put it with the recessives. For me, I think recessive would also be placeholder for the main project gene involved, so I would personally probably put super asphalt here (ex. Od enchi super asphalt or od enchi freeway). The super label is used more-so for accent genes (ex. Super od, super enchi, super pastel etc.)
@@SnakeDaddyExotics yeah I think the community is mostly on the same page with this. It definitely simplifies the project direction by ending it with the allelic but then suffixing the recessives after. So “super Od enchi freeway Crypton axanthic” I think the supers start the name then incomplete then allelic incomplete should obviously end all incompletes and the start of recessives should be where the allelic recessive starts. Idk sounds right to me. “Super pastel enchi mystic potion candino pied” you’d probably not even know what that actually is but you get the point. I think we are on the same page.

Separating recessive from others in naming order makes really good sense.
And for the love of god , people need to stop naming snakes names like sativa, indica ,nagini etc etc

100% agreed, I would also agree with the names y’all would keep and that’s what I go with as well, I have lessers and butters, I just call them all lesser because I like the name lesser better and it’s also the one I heard first and more of, banana is the absolute best name for that gene, it gets spots and everything like a banana etc. just pick one name and let go with that
FANTASTIC VIDEO! I have the same pet peace. One other peave is when a breeder stacks 6 or 7 or 8 genes or morphs. They list them all but you can't see them all. Only way to truly know is to buy it and prove it out. And more times than not the genes or morphs are all the high end ones. So they're more expensive. I refuse to buy something,then work with it to find out I got took. I have a Lesser Pastel Leopard. 3 is the limit for me because I'd like to have some of the fun in breeding too. If I come up with a hot mess,then so be it. At least I get some enjoyment out of it. Today the trade industry is not that anymore. It's become a stacking contest and it sucks shit through a straw.
I purchased a spinner blast a few years back as a pet. Had I known about the spider gene, I wouldn't have got it. Breeder even said if I was to breed like animals, they would be worth a grand each. Spider to spider is lethal. Smh.
There needs to be an unofficial naming commission that once something is even basically confirmed to be the same gene it just gets moved into the original name for the mutation
But you can get the same look from different genes eg @OlympusReptiles having something they believe is a different gene of Pastel. In which case tagging the Pastel is going to be necessary with the origination of each line is going to need to happen.
also one thing to note here, i work alot of butter and lesser, and ive actually noticed a bit of variation in the butter vrs the lesser, the butter line is more yellow, even if its the same gene because we can prove this by making bels in but x les, what do we do here capt? As im sure not all of these will be like this? but both my male and female butters, have more yellow than brown, like lessers are more tan/khaki/brown compared to butter being, well butter. (i can video if you want to see) Im assuming its polygenic line breeding that causes this, but any input is appreciated
Just line breeding. Ive seen yellow in lesser too frequently.

Maybe they are distinct but It definitely can be line breeding. Also some genes enhance colors so enchi butter or enchi lesser are gonna look very similar because the yellow/orange enhancements. But even enchi has lineage distinct coloration enhancements so that’s not conclusive enough.
The other problem is people who buy butters and rename them as lesser and vice versa. So then you have a line that could look butter but is lesser. It’s more common than you would think especially when butter is $80 and someone can make an extra $30 calling it lesser.
In closing: Are they actually different? Maybe but testing would be the only way to tell because it’s so muddy to be sure. Either testing decides the name or we just rename them as the same. Or most likely we just keep arguing about them until the end of time and keep both names. The real answer is it’s complicated and not definitive.

I was just talking to caleb about this In the last few days. it confuses me to no end to have combo names. I just write out all of the jeans a to z.
Maybe because I just bought a snake this month and I’m only 4 feeding in but non of these names make any sense like bro i bought an “orange dream” but it’s really just a brown snake with a hint of orange 😭 like the snake community reminds me of the weed community all these damn strains of snakes

Even though Desert Ghost is the older name, if we were to ever chose a name for that gene I'd prefer Enhancer because then there could be no confusion with the genes Desert (with infertile females) or Ghost aka hypo aka hypomelanistic aka orange ghost aka yellow ghost (yeah that's another one that needs a serious name trimming). Also I tend towards having a preference for gene names that try to do something to describe what it does in the snake. Ie butter vs lesser - butter is a fair descriptor of the colors present in the snake with that morph. Lesser makes me think this snake is somehow inferior? To what? (I know it was the 'lesser version' of platinum but most folks now just getting into the hobby? They have no idea.) What's a chocolate? Well if I guess a snake that has rich brown chocolate tones, I wouldn't be too far off. In that vein, Enhancer pretty well describes what it does to the gene - it enhances the brightness and clarity of the pattern.
Also you didn't mention HRA/green ghost/lace blackback/lori/whatever else its going by this month. I thought for sure that one would make it on the board. But I guess I can understand why: your whiteboard isn't big enough to fit all the names that same gene has xD

I actually just had a similar conversation earlier this week and agree with mush of what you guys said.
The whole ball python community is hinged on these names, and it is silly, but without the hype the community will just be people raising snakes. And that would damage a whole bunch of egos, and bank accounts.
Just curious if i could send you a pic of a ball python i rescued to see what genes you think it may have in it.
My daughter sent me swabs to find what genes I have, I told her I don't care. Same goes for my snakes.

Aren't Mystics, Phantoms, and Mojaves all the same? I noticed you didn't include Mojave with the other two.
The way to tell if it’s the same Gene is to look at the supers.
Super mystic and super phantom have a white/tan line going down the dorsal sometimes broken or solid. The sides have sucker like circles. Often the dark sides are purple when they are born and get brown with age.
Super Mojave is a white snake with a purple head that gets brown with age. There is no side pattern on a super Mojave. Sometimes there can be faint pattern but you can’t usually see the pattern at all.
As far as I can remember Kinova and Mutation Creation talking about Enhancer and DG, they're supposed to be different lines of the same mutation with slight differences from the line breeding (Canadian and US), as well as Moray being European and Monsoon being Dave Green's. Also, HRA!!! Ffs there are soooo many names for HRA
If it is the same gene, it meeds the same name. A new line is not a new gene. Just marketing. If wanting that difference, just list it as dg so and sos line.
I dont use code names i just say every gene and if its a gene with two words i put those words together no space but capitalize them

I am fairly new and did find it very annoying at first, searching for info and videos only to find out they were the same .I rehomed a snake I think it's mojave but there are so many that look the same 🙄

I have asked numerous times at a show...What makes this a DG or What makes this a Fire...The answer I usually get is "Oh it is just a morph". I am trying to learn what these morphs look like. Tell me what you see that says this snake has the Fire morph. The Breeders/sellers can never tell me. Do most not know??

The most disturbing thing is some breeders think its a good idea to over charge you for a Hurricane. No way in hell I would buy a Hurricane clown for $5000. Wtf Thats not honest. Compare the Trick price to a Hurricane price. Thanks to the honest breeders out there that price right.

We have some specific reasons for that. Caleb is a bit sensitive about that one. The "hurricane is different" was one that was fought to the bitter end and just to get more $$$. It has even been rumored that the creator of hurricane purchased a set of trick. Then the trick "disappeared, died, etc" few years later hurricane popped up. Seems......suspicious

Idea if someone uses a fancy name. have a book on the side of the table with all your listing's and what the names means. Then people theoretically would stop asking what it is. because they could look through it and now what it is before buying.

You could sell morph booklets though, so maybe that’s a plus even if it was with the purchase of something else or by itself for cheap. Maybe if there was a morph poster on the table with common single genes.

Ghost needs to stop. It should all be hypo.
“ghost” in other reptiles is actually a combo name for Hypo Axanthinc but in BP it’s called “true Ghost” because some idiot decided not to take a second before planting a “name flag” on the uncharted BP moon. I think we can thank “the world of ball pythons” site for setting the precedent for being the first to try and name things.

Hypo/ghost, then you have the true ghost which is authentic and hypo then you got the desert ghost and then you have the desert plus ghost in desert is an absolutely useless Gene because the females are not fertile
