i was in manila last year. i took a cab from the airport and the driver is asking me 3500 pesos for a 12 miles distance. so i ask him don’t you have meter? i prefer to use the meter please. he insisted not to use the meter and he is very firm about the price. so i said just drop me off but he kept driving until we are far enough away from the airport and lowered the price to 3300 pesos. i said no and he dropped me off in the middle of a bridge with two large suitcases. i kept walking probably 1hr and half until i saw a police or maybe a traffic aid im not sure. then i ask for their help. i told them what happened and they helped me to get a cab so i could get to my hotel. the total cab price was 387pesos but i gave him 1000 pesos.
Same, now I just use grab or Book Joyride from the airport. I will go out of the way to not use the airport taxis. Trying to charge me 3600 Pesos, then the girl working at the taxi stand wanted me to give her 400 Pesos just for her doing her job. I just laughed at her, I'm no mark or a cheapskate but I only tip for good service, and I will not be taken advantage of

It’s good they just particularized Manila, not the Philippines. It’s like saying avoid San Fran, but the US as a whole has many safe places to offer. The Phils is vast so go and enjoy Palawan, Cebu, Bohol, BGC in Taguig, Dumaguete and the like. They’re my top 5. One more thing it’s good Forbes didn’t mentioned Metro Manila because that comprised a number of cities.❤️👍
Sad but true. As a Filipino I have to admit that even I don't feel safe in Manila or most other parts of Metro Manila for that matter. And those children that the big group of tourists referred to, why doesn't the city or national govt do something about them? There's also a need to increase police visibility and engage local volunteers perhaps. There must be a way. Many comments here make a lot of sense, like in that suggestion that the mayor or any relevant city official roam around incognito. Only then will they probably see and grasp the seriousness of the problem. It could also be that they already knew but they were just turning a blind eye.
I am a white American-Filipino mix from NYC, and whenever I visit Philippines to see my family (Mother’s side), I enjoy my trip there, but I always get targeted for scams, price discrimination, and I can understand some cursing (I understand some Tagalog). I still wanna visit my ancestral country once every 2 years to spend time with family and to maintain my roots though.
because (Metro) Manila has one of the poorest tourist services in the world, no monorails, no hop ons and offs, no tour centers..they barely fend for themselves once they arrive in NAIA..in fact, just last year I visited home, a couple of female tourists were nearly in tears when they arrived as they dont know where to go, its really disorganized and sad.

I was a balikbayan there last year and I was scammed by a tricycle driver I used at Taft going to Pedro Gil by Robinson place. It was raining and Taft ave got flooded. He was a careless driver who wanted to charge me P500 for the ride but I refused to pay the exorbitant fee. I reported him to the security guard who threatened him to call the police if he did not accept the P200 I was offering. That was outrageous.🥵🥵🥵

I've been to Manila eight times and stayed for a few days. From 2007-2012 I felt unsafe but from 2021 until now I feel safe. When I have brought my Cebuana wife and son there she doesnt feel safe and is afraid but me not. It's alot safer than before but having it near Lagos and Pakistan ouch thats rough.

Drastic change in population in Manila City is what is needed if we want to promote it for tourism. Old structures can easily be fixed but population would be harder.
I am hopeful that Manila will be a great city again someday, but in the present moment, let us not deny the truth: 1. street dwellers 2. many squatters 3. poor city design 4. poor transportation system 5. spaghetti wires 6. poor regulation on building design 7. poor infrastructure 8. unsystematic or unorganized management I am sure, the LGU is making progress, there are many projects, but if you solve the above first, you resolve the optics issue.

Kung 12 years to 20 years ago totoo na mataas ang security risk sa siyudad na yan lalo na nung esyudyante pa ako.... sa ngayon mukhang nag improve sila. 3 years nako nagtatrabaho sa bagong opisina namin sa city of Manila at madalas kami mag lunch out at gumala after work dyan. What about San Francisco is that city not one of the riskiest cities in the world? Los Angeles? New York? Seattle? et. etc. etc. Look, San Francisco's many tourists spots and department stores (even newly opened malls) are close. Many big business are closed because of so many homeless, shoplifting, defecating anywhere. The Fisherman's wharf was popular with tourist from all around the world long time ago, I've heard it's been closed for good. Also the subway underground transportation is dangerous because there are people loitering around with mental illness. How did they go through to get to the subway down without a ticket for your ride? Three weeks ago, a 74 year old Pilipina waiting for her train was pushed to an incoming train by a mentally ill man and she collided with the train head on. The victim died before reaching the nearest emergency hospital in the Bay Area. So there you are people. Which is the riskiest in the world? Los Angeles also is another big city that is about to follow San Francisco, same with New York City. Kensington, Pennsylvania, where you see addicts walking like zombies. San Francisco is almost like a ghost town now a days. My husband and I have lived there in the 90's. It was a bustling and vibrant city with full of energy. We didn't see any homeless at all.

Manila City is my favorite city of all the Philippines. Pero please lang po mayor, ung mga underpass na malalapit lang sa Cityhall, baka pwede naman gawing ligtas sa gabi. daming pulubi sa paligid ng mga underpass. sana ayusin at pagandahin , lagyan ng mga bantay. ung mga pulubi jan, damitan ng maayos, turuan at imbes na tambay, sila na ang gawing tagabantay o gwardiya sa lugar, nang meron silang dignidad na hanapbuhay at may pagkakakitaang maayos kesa manlimos.
Nagpunta ako sa Ugbo kasi nafeature sa youtube, ang gulo gulo papunta duon, yung mga tao at mga sasakyan, iba iba ng direksyon (pero nag enjoy naman sa Ugbo kasi sanay ako sa lagay ng Maynila). Tapos nung minsan nasaraduhan ako ng LRT Recto station, natakot ako kasi medyo madilim duon at alam kong maraming pickpockets duon. To think, I grew up in Ubelt area near UST (now residing in other part of the metro), ganito pananaw ko, paano pa kaya ang turista mula sa ibang bansa. Manila needs to step up in leaps and bounds, sobrang napag iwanan na, knowing that this is the capital of this country.

I’ve been to Cinque Terre, Barcelona, and Paris, and have been robbed in the first two, and Paris we experienced an attempt. I’ve also heard from locals how they can’t even leave anything in their cars because it’s so likely that their cars will be broken into, both in the city and in gas stations. I really feel much safer in the Philippines/Manila. Sure, I’m not a tourist here, but of the many tourist friends I’ve had, i can count on one hand those that have had bad experiences.
Mayor the first step po of resolving a problem is first accepting there is a problem. Im pretty sure you and your people are well aware of these risks in your city but choosing to turn a blind eye on them will only make the problem worse than it is.
I had an anxiety attack the first time I traveled to Manila. It’s a topsy turvy city. I even got paranoid of taxi cab drivers. It felt like you should never trust anyone there. My friend was also robbed at the bus station to Baguio.

i was in manila last year. i took a cab from the airport and the driver is asking me 3500 pesos for a 12 miles distance. so i ask him don’t you have meter? i prefer to use the meter please. he insisted not to use the meter and he is very firm about the price. so i said just drop me off but he kept driving until we are far enough away from the airport and lowered the price to 3300 pesos. i said no and he dropped me off in the middle of a bridge with two large suitcases. i kept walking probably 1hr and half until i saw a police or maybe a traffic aid im not sure. then i ask for their help. i told them what happened and they helped me to get a cab so i could get to my hotel. the total cab price was 387pesos but i gave him 1000 pesos.
Same, now I just use grab or Book Joyride from the airport. I will go out of the way to not use the airport taxis. Trying to charge me 3600 Pesos, then the girl working at the taxi stand wanted me to give her 400 Pesos just for her doing her job. I just laughed at her, I'm no mark or a cheapskate but I only tip for good service, and I will not be taken advantage of

Sad but true. As a Filipino I have to admit that even I don't feel safe in Manila or most other parts of Metro Manila for that matter. And those children that the big group of tourists referred to, why doesn't the city or national govt do something about them? There's also a need to increase police visibility and engage local volunteers perhaps. There must be a way.
Many comments here make a lot of sense, like in that suggestion that the mayor or any relevant city official roam around incognito. Only then will they probably see and grasp the seriousness of the problem. It could also be that they already knew but they were just turning a blind eye.
I am a white American-Filipino mix from NYC, and whenever I visit Philippines to see my family (Mother’s side), I enjoy my trip there, but I always get targeted for scams, price discrimination, and I can understand some cursing (I understand some Tagalog). I still wanna visit my ancestral country once every 2 years to spend time with family and to maintain my roots though.

I was a balikbayan there last year and I was scammed by a tricycle driver I used at Taft going to Pedro Gil by Robinson place. It was raining and Taft ave got flooded. He was a careless driver who wanted to charge me P500 for the ride but I refused to pay the exorbitant fee. I reported him to the security guard who threatened him to call the police if he did not accept the P200 I was offering. That was outrageous.🥵🥵🥵

I've been to Manila eight times and stayed for a few days. From 2007-2012 I felt unsafe but from 2021 until now I feel safe. When I have brought my Cebuana wife and son there she doesnt feel safe and is afraid but me not. It's alot safer than before but having it near Lagos and Pakistan ouch thats rough.

What about San Francisco is that city not one of the riskiest cities in the world? Los Angeles? New York? Seattle? et. etc. etc. Look, San Francisco's many tourists spots and department stores (even newly opened malls) are close. Many big business are closed because of so many homeless, shoplifting, defecating anywhere. The Fisherman's wharf was popular with tourist from all around the world long time ago, I've heard it's been closed for good. Also the subway underground transportation is dangerous because there are people loitering around with mental illness. How did they go through to get to the subway down without a ticket for your ride? Three weeks ago, a 74 year old Pilipina waiting for her train was pushed to an incoming train by a mentally ill man and she collided with the train head on. The victim died before reaching the nearest emergency hospital in the Bay Area. So there you are people. Which is the riskiest in the world? Los Angeles also is another big city that is about to follow San Francisco, same with New York City. Kensington, Pennsylvania, where you see addicts walking like zombies.
San Francisco is almost like a ghost town now a days. My husband and I have lived there in the 90's. It was a bustling and vibrant city with full of energy. We didn't see any homeless at all.

5. Nawawalan ng kuryente (brownout)

6. Nakawan at kikilan sa NAIA airport
7. EXPENSIVE accomodations
8. Maraming patayan, kriminal, nakawan, mandurukot, snatchers, kidnappers , drug addicts at mga pushers
9. Mga ganid na taxi at tricycle drivers over-charging/scamming foreign tourists
10. Mga basura or litters sa kalye at mga bangketa. Mga pinoy wala talagang disiplina. Kahit saan tayo nagtatapon ng mga basura/ litters natin.
11. Pati sa mga beach, dagat, gubat at bundok may mga basura din..mga plastic bottles, plastik supot, wrappers at kung ano ano pang mga litter/garbage.
12. Mga illegal vendors sa kalsada/bangketa, may vendor din sa gitna ng badian canyon, panglao sandbar at mga bangkang vendor sa dagat ng el nido at coron. Kaya madumi at maraming mga basura sa ating mga kapaligiran at kalikasan. MAGTINDA KAYO SA TAMANG LUGAR.

Pero please lang po mayor, ung mga underpass na malalapit lang sa Cityhall, baka pwede naman gawing ligtas sa gabi. daming pulubi sa paligid ng mga underpass. sana ayusin at pagandahin , lagyan ng mga bantay. ung mga pulubi jan, damitan ng maayos, turuan at imbes na tambay, sila na ang gawing tagabantay o gwardiya sa lugar, nang meron silang dignidad na hanapbuhay at may pagkakakitaang maayos kesa manlimos.

Nagpunta ako sa Ugbo kasi nafeature sa youtube, ang gulo gulo papunta duon, yung mga tao at mga sasakyan, iba iba ng direksyon (pero nag enjoy naman sa Ugbo kasi sanay ako sa lagay ng Maynila). Tapos nung minsan nasaraduhan ako ng LRT Recto station, natakot ako kasi medyo madilim duon at alam kong maraming pickpockets duon. To think, I grew up in Ubelt area near UST (now residing in other part of the metro), ganito pananaw ko, paano pa kaya ang turista mula sa ibang bansa. Manila needs to step up in leaps and bounds, sobrang napag iwanan na, knowing that this is the capital of this country.

I’ve been to Cinque Terre, Barcelona, and Paris, and have been robbed in the first two, and Paris we experienced an attempt. I’ve also heard from locals how they can’t even leave anything in their cars because it’s so likely that their cars will be broken into, both in the city and in gas stations.
I really feel much safer in the Philippines/Manila. Sure, I’m not a tourist here, but of the many tourist friends I’ve had, i can count on one hand those that have had bad experiences.

I had an anxiety attack the first time I traveled to Manila. It’s a topsy turvy city. I even got paranoid of taxi cab drivers. It felt like you should never trust anyone there. My friend was also robbed at the bus station to Baguio.

Dapat kasi gumagala din ang mga opisyal sa kanilang nasasakupan para makita nila ang mga problema. Napansin ko dyan daming homeless na natutulog sa kalye at ang panghi ng simoy ng hangin.
Last year nag lakad ako from dolomite beach to Robinsons mall. On my way to the mall. Ang daming squatters nag lalaba sa kalsada, kung saan saan nila sinasampay mga nilabhan nila, kitang kita sa mga dumadaan na turista. aso, pusa, mga bata sa sidewslk, daming lumang tricycles nasa daan, madumi, daming naglilimus sa mga turista.
