Since this game is a Luigi game and NOT a Mario Game, there was no excuse for not including Yoshi's Island in the marathon
Sadly, this game is in New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe, and is thus part of the full Mario game. If it was only New Super Luigi U on the Wii U, there may have been an argument.

Yes, but no. Like it is it's own game, but also it clearly isn't. It's very much like a mario world romhack. Those are their own games, but also they're still Super Mario World. Luigi U is it's own game, but it's also still Mario U at the same time.

I looked it up and apparently it actually isn't called mario world 2, but just called 'super mario: yoshi's island' in japan, meaning it isn't actually mario world 2 in japan, but does have the mario name. so they technically linked it to mario world to 'sell more', but it always had mario in the name for series tying purposes

The Japanese release was subtitled similarly to the English releases, however according to The Cutting Room Floor; the katakana translates simply as "Super Mario: Yoshi's Island" meaning that the direct connection to Super Mario *World* was indeed a post-release invention
However, for a time in development it was called Super Mario Bros 5: Yoshi’s Island.

(also learning katakana is hella easy since it's phonetic and often used to spell english words. you can learn it all in like a week if you make some flash cards)

By the way, it is true that it IS only in called Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island in English. In Japan, it's called Super Mario: Yoshi Island. But well, it still has super mario in the name. I imagine it wasn't called that in Japanese was because Super Mario World is not what that game is called in Japanese. It's called Super Mario Bros 4: Super Mario World and there is speculation that they were going to call is Super Mario Bros 5: Yoshi's World originally.

I think that there is an argument to be had of rather or not the first Yoshi island game is a Yoshi game or a Mario game. But I do understand why y'all wanted to leave it out of the 2D Mario marathon. And it is true that the first Yoshi's Island's full legal name is Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. But I am pretty sure they only did that for marketing purposes.
