I love the Clarke original. It has that haunting, beautiful woody sound. Have bought some of the other cheap whistles as well as an expensive brass one from McNeela’s and always go back to the Original Clarke D.
So appreciate your review. I’ve been playing the Clark since 1997 and I love it. I’ve given so many way as so many people were really drawn to it. I’ve used in my musical therapist work with hospice patients and they love it. I have so many stories to tell because of the Clark …it has been a contestant in my life and has given myself and so maybe others magical moments.. my favourite thing to do it to play outside and provide a mystical magical gift to those who hear it but do not know where it’s coming from. And I hear you, I don’t read music, and I am grateful , so grateful for the day I stumbled across this little whistle while searching for so,etching for a patient that was a singer, now unable to sing. I wanted to find something she could play to still express her musical soul, as she no longer could speak. In the end , it was a gift for her and then after she passed away. A gift for me.
It always makes me sad when I hear people talk about "reading sheet music" as though it's some kind of special esoteric, and mundane skill. It's really not that hard since it's not too different from reading tabs. However the one part people never seem to embrace is how awesome it feels to play sheet music. When you slap a song down that you haven't played in a while or you're playing it for the first time, and you can sight read it well, it feels fantastic. You have the notes which are easy, but then you have the rhythm AND the dynamics on top. Playing well by following sheet music can feel really rewarding. I also like it because it's kind of like the alphabet of music. Sure you can copy songs by ear and play them, but that's sort of like only being able to listen and speak a language, without being able to read a fantastic book from that language. I don't think of "ugh, sheet music is this thing I need to learn so I can "be a real musician"", it's more "music is pretty cool with all these cool parts to it, and sheet music is another cool part in the whole package."
What a beautiful take on reading sheet music. I've always despised reading coz I have a natural tendency to play by ear but this kind of makes me want that superpower :)
I have a Clarke Sweetone in C and I just bought a Sweetone in D today. Sounds great!! Easier to play than the Feadog. Feadog sounds bright and clear and Clarke sweetone sounds a little bit breathy, soft and warm. I like them both!!
Some people (such as me) mash the windway opening down a bit (on the traditional Clarkes) with the thumb to reduce the air requirement. It doesn't change the tone but provides a little back pressure.
I have done most of my recording work on Clarke whistles. One in particular that has been played for thousands of hours and repainted twice. Tommy Makem played Clarke C a lot in the 1950/60s. I also have a Shaw C that is similarly built but has a more focused wind way. This makes it easier to play, but it's quieter.
I cannot agree more! I started with Generation, but the consistency of the Traditional Clarke, especially in the upper octave, is much better. That is the only model I play right now, and I have experienced too the issue of rust, so the brush is highly recmmended, as well as let it dry out a little bit after playing. The wooden mouthpiece works better if you play every day, even a little, to keep it wet, although soaking it in grappa also works very well (and it does not cause rust).
Thank you for this review, I originally chose a C Clarke tin whistle mainly because my recorder is in C so naively at the time I thought staying in the same key would help. Lesson learned. I must admit I did struggle with the tin whistle. But thought it was just down to me. Until I then found your review here. I need a lot more breath/puff or wind. You mentioned the differences with the sweet tone. So I decided to purchase a D sweet tone After watching this particular review . You say they are easier. And yes, a massive difference. So thank you
i bought both a traditional (d) and a sweetone (c). i like them both, the sweetone is easier to play due to the ergonomic mouthpiece and the easier air control, and has got a clearer and louder sound. however I like the traditional's tone and looks better
Thanks so much, CutiePie. A big problem I have with the tin whistle is that I overblow. This comes from playing the Scottish bagpipes, which require a lot of wind! I try very hard to blow softly but my training usually gets the better of me.

You know, as much as I'm getting accustomed to the breathy tone of the original Clarke, when I hear the sweet tone on this recording I love it. It's always a bit hard to tell from these video recordings. When I play a Clarke w/the wood fipple block, it sounds much more 'airy' then when I hear it recorded. I wasn't sure but after hearing your comparison I think I want one of those sweet-tone whistles too. Thanks again! These clips you do are really helpful! ~JSV
Loved the video and the review. Although I am still a beginner I have always played low D whistles but your videos have also made me want to get a high D. I never did because they all sounded very shrill to me but that Clark Classic with the wood block sounds great! So I ordered one of those the other day and love it! One thing I noticed as well, for anyone who thinks they might want to advance to the low D at some point or add the low D to what they play, that Clark Classic is perfect for them. It requires quite alot more air than other high Ds I have played so it is a good training tool for stepping up to low D as they require quite a bit more air as well. Thanks for the review and loving this little whistle.
i am totally enchanted with my new Clark Original. Your explanation of the wood block playing better wet makes so much sense (think reeds in clarinet or oboe!) To me, for the price point, it has become my hands down favorite of my whistles. i find, too, its not so much MORE breath but more concentrated breath. And find that its less piercing than the other low priced whistles. Thank you for this review, now i know to order the cleaning kit so my new favorite whistle can live a long, healthy life. ☺️
The Clarke Traditional can be improved by 1 sealing the sides and bottom of the wood block using silicone caulking, epoxy or other sealant. And 2 place the whistle in a vice gripping the wood block (use pads to protect the finish) then press down and bend the top of the windway to flatten and focus the air stream. This will improve the sound and playability and it will take much less breath.
Does the moisture while playing fill the same role without physically altering the whistle;as the wood expands? I just got mine after having the other popular cheap kinds and I am completely smitten with this one!
Always a pleasure to watch your videos. They are always just the right length ,informative and your bubbly nature is cheering and with sweet music makes each viewing is a little treat. I am a lousy player so won"t offer any technical comments save I do like the meg whistles and Dixon"s too. I am not a great fan of Irish music preferring Scottish, old English, country and more sedate music even classical. But I would like you to consider playing some Italian music (lol) such as O Sole Mio or/and Arrivederci Roma which both lend themselves beautifully to the whistle . Just a suggestion. BTW your Scottish accent on your Burn"s night video had me well and truly fooled and I am normally pretty good at detecting dialects other than MY OWN lass ! Talking of which do look at Burn"s famous song A Red Red Rose which sounds beautiful on the whistle. I know you would do my suggestions justice.
I got a Clarke Sweetone in D to replace the one I accidently bent over my knee (it was laying on my bed, I didn't see it, I almost cried) and oddly enough it sounds more shrill and harsh than the last one did even though they're the same kind from the same company. But I've found as I play more I'm growing more accustom to it and I'm able to get a sweeter sound. For a Sweetone tone which I agree should really be called a Sharptune.
There's an edition of that Clarke tin whistle book that comes bundled with a CD featuring Bill Ochs working through the lessons and playing most of the tunes in the songbook. That's a nice aid for people like me who have limited musical literacy.

I own the exact whistle in "C"...I bought it 26 years ago...I love it, especially threw my guitar pedal..y Boss ME-80! Going to play it threw my Moog Matriarch!
The original Clarke was my first tin whistle, then I bouth a Feadón in keys of C and D. Now I want to try the Dixon Pro (DX005) or maybe I should spend more and finally get a Killarney or a Shy whistle.
Recently got the Clarke original one, and that's really hard to play, after getting it then i decided to search for answears, and the Original One was meant to produce exactly that dirt sound, and it requiers much more air to play, and it will keep having that hard and dirt sound, now i got a sweetone, i think it will better for me
I used to have the original bllack one when I was little. I wished I still had it. I make flutes a lot, but I never aim for presise notes or keys when tuning them, to show the genuine hand made instead of factory made. I am in America. If you are ever interested, not sure, I could post a few on ebay, but not sure, how much it would cost shipping to the UK erea of the world. I sold some locally but the have sent a few flutses to a girl in Portland Oregon, but it was a which where she displayed and put My name in a video to show I made them as a payment because she wanted but did not have the money so I sent the flutes to her though it was around 20 dollars shipping from My city to hers.
The section on ornamentation in the Clark book by Bill Ochs is worth the price of the book alone. If you're looking to learn ornamentation, it's a must read...
The note on the C whistle you refer to is a Bb (would be C nat on a D same fingering though) - so playing in F. The Sweetone / Meg are more in tune than the trad whistle. Nice playing as usual. My favourite is the Clarke Celtic
My local wind instrument store has clarke whistles on sale at the moment, I'm looking forward to getting a traditional. I've been practicing on a cheap reed whistle, made in india and oh man its so out of tune and really difficult to get the low and high notes. It also tends to screech unnecessarily, even after I've cleaned it, warmed it up, etc. So looking forward to getting a nicer so I can continue to get better :)
It's a commemorative whistle, exactly the same as the Classic, but just a different colour...Though I think the D whistles seem to be better than the C when they're made in the original style 😊
Yes I understand it is basically the same underlying whistle. However, in your review mentioned that: a) It doesn't sound as sweet b) It was more breathy/more airy c) seemed less in tune d) was sharper/rougher on the holes making sliding and ornaments a little more difficult compared to the smoother painted finish. Also at circa £18, it is 20% more expensive than the Classic at £15. None of that denotes anything particularly special to me personally... despite the nice little commemorative plaque. Then again, what do I know ... I don't even play the Tin Whistle (though I do play the Baroque recorder). Anyhow, I've ordered the Classic and can't wait get started!! And I don't suppose it will be long until my lusting after an MK Pro in Black (as much as I love your green one also). As a request, how about the theme tune to "The Bridge" on your low D? I can imagine that sounding great. Keep up the great work and all the best with your channel. :-)
Hello CutiePie, I was planning to buy the Silver Tin Whistle you own, cause it looked pretty nice, but I wanted to be sure it had the sound I like, so I found your video, thanks for showing the 3 models. Now I know non of these models have the kind of sound I like, I think I look for something more vibrant and bright, do you have any Sugestion?
Stephanie, I'm assuming that you have received my explanation as to what I've been doing, if not I will send it again. Now about this video... As I mentioned in my last comment you look amazing on my new phone in 720p that looks like 720hd. I've been missing out on the beautiful details of your perfect beautifulness on that old phone that I had... I'm kind of glad that it went by the way side. This video is such a great video for anyone wanting to know all the details of the Clarke whistles. I still haven't purchased the black Clarke D whistle yet... yours and my favorite one of the three, but as I've said before, I do have the little red sweet tone. At first, I found it very hard to play, but with time it didn't seem so impossible to master and I have had some positive comments about it's tone. So your husband is not the only one that likes the sound of the little red devil. It can be tuned by heating the mouth piece in hot water and removing it by twisting and pulling. And then I use Teflon plummers tape to seal it back on... I can then move it in and out to change the pitch if needed. Also, the sound can be improved by putting some putty or paper in the hollow area in the mouth piece in front of the wind way. There is a detailed website giving the details of this improvement process online. I didn't figure this out on my own. Why use your brain when most things are on the smart phone already. The wooden block whistles probably sound better when wet because the wood swells up and any air that is escaping between the metal bore and the wood gets sealed off... I'm not sure, its just a possibility. Now, about that bore cleaning rod... I didn't know that those things were available. Thank you so much for letting us know that they are available. I've been using a shotgun bore cleaning rod and swab to clean my whistles... with clean new swabs of coarse. Now, I have a question... How is your weather? The weather here is fabulous, but a bit chilly. Down in the thirties at night again, but will be in the seventies tomorrow and some flowers and most trees are blooming like crazy... with lots of pollen everywhere. I hope your weather is getting spring like by now to some degree. Thank you for all of your hard work... I know you love what you do, but it's hard work and very much loved and appreciated by me and so many others. I've been checking out your other videos that I missed out on while my phone was offline and they are wonderful and you look more beautiful than I could ever imagine in your beautiful outfits. I now have SweetTone and the Original The wood block in the Original tastes unpleasant at the moment. Hope this will wear off. Does require more air, but by far the quietest whistle I own, so useful as my husband's desk is quite close to mine. Can play this without deafening him ( or the cat). Sweet Tone, certaikny louder and sharper than the Original. Want to rake the Sweet Tone into the garden in the summer, so as these are so cheap it doesn't matter if they get dropped.
Just got the Sweettone C because I really like the Sweettone D. However, I am not as happy with the C. The fipple seems on crooked and the bottom note is a stretch to reach.

The red Clarke Sweetone sits next to my computer in the open air because I use it to check my tabs are correct before posting videos 😊 the whistles I play most are kept in whistle pouches (on the table I'm sat at in this video) and the whistles I don't play are in cardboard tubes under the table 🤣🤣
Bought a Clarke Sweetone in D and silver. First octave is ok. Second sounds raspy and cheap to me. I think Steph's sounds slightly better than mine. I paid about 7 GBP but kinda wished I had gone for the Feadog Pro which is only about 11 on Amazon. Prior to the Clake I bought a Lark poly and it makes has a nice tone but too much like a recorder. Plus getting into 2nd octave is very fussy / precise and its too easy to go into third or stay low.
Sound is very much personal preference, some like is sharper, done like it rounder, done like it breathy and soft. The most important thing is to give time to get to know the whistle. A lot of the time it's simply a matter of getting used to the whistles individual 'needs' so to speak. Once you know a whistle, you'll know how much air you need and when, and then you'll be able to play it at its best 😊

You mention that the original Clark needs cleaning so it wont rust. How is that done since it is one piece and has a wooden block? I am thinking occasional brief soaking in water? Love your videos!
I wouldn't recommend that as it'll encourage rust and damage the wooden block. You're better off getting the Clarke whistle brush and leaving the whistle out to thoroughly dry after playing. That's about all you'll need 😊
Hey! I have the traditional Clarke tin whistle in D. I really like the sound when I hear you play (😂) but there's no way I can make it sound that way!!!!! Seriously, is there anything I should try to sound better? I've tried the tongue thing you mention in other videos but it's still awful..
I just subscribed to your channel. I play the hammered dulcimer. (I just started playing it again after not playing for several years.) My sister started playing the bowed psaltery and also stopped playing about the same time I did. I got her an original Clarke tin whistle and she wants to start practicing both again (so we can play together). I'm thinking of getting the Clarke Sweetone for myself for when I want to play it instead of the dulcimer. I played the flute in high school, which was a long time ago, but It looks like the tin whistle will be somewhat similar. If my sister has trouble blowing into the Clarke original, we can switch whistles. I discovered your channel when I was trying to find out what keys each played. I want to play The Galway Shawl, which is in the key of G. I've read that you can play in the key of G on the D whistle. Is this true? It would mostly be a matter of being able to play a C instead of a C#. I know my sister can play in the key of C easiest for the bowed psaltery, but it looks like it's range would also play D and G. The hammered dulcimer can obviously play more keys, so I can always change which key I play a song on that. I mostly like to play folk and Irish music and hymns.
Tin whistles are so affordable it's often worth picking up a few keys so you can play with multiple instruments. But each whistle can play extra notes, somewhat chromatically, outside of its regular diatonic scale, by half holing. @@superdooper1830 From my end I own both the clarke "the meg" which was my first whistle and two celtic D whistles. The celtic has a fuller and slightly darker sound than the meg which is a little more piercing, although to me not in a bad way. I recently bought someones collection of generation whistles. They are noticably brighter, and easier to get a steady tone out of. I'd say I am a beginner but the generations appear to be a little easier to work with and the sound is very characteristically "classic tin whistle". Smaller fipples too. I am still in the fence as to what I like more. The clarkes feel to me a little smoother in the high register perhaps, but you have to work more to shape the note. They are also slightly breathier with a little more hollowness to the tone. It reads as a little more melanchloy to me. The generations are pretty consistent and in tune in the way they sound but my to celtics sound pretty different although it's the same whistle. Probably about the placement of the fipple. They are also slightly differently tuned. Play around with that at your own peril. My meg head cracked a little bit after a while.
Have you ever tried a Goldie? I’ve got one of my own in Low D and Ross Ainslie (who you might be familiar with) gave me two of his (in Alto F and Low E) and they are absolutely incredible. Probably the only make that comes close is MK. 😀
Martin Laird I'd LOVE to try a Goldie but I haven't found the chance to spend the extra cash as yet. I only really play for my own amusement so I don't really NEED another whistle, no matter how much I want one 🤣

Does anyone else have trouble with the dibble becoming loose? Like it shrinks? And I’ve rehydrate them in hot water but once it’s shrank it always need to be in hot eater before playing?
HI, could you please do some reviews on your high end whistles, we all have a bag full of cheap ones. But what to buy next. I have a tony dixon low d, that I like... but I don't love! I have a couple of Susato's, a D and C, and once again 'I like them', but keep thinking there is more, there is better ones out there. But don't want to spend thousands buying them just to test them, and not like them! Cheers
Thanks for the suggestion...I don't really have any high end whistles that haven't already been reviewed on my channel. My only expensive whistle was my MKpro...and I'll be honest, I don't want to spend thousands testing whistles either - especially considering this UA-cam channel is a hobby - not a job ;) I have Susato whistles and a Dixon Pro high D which you can hear on some of my latest videos, but I won't be splashing out anything pricey as I don't feel the need - the whistles I have at the moment cover all my needs. If you decide to get something high end, do let us know your thoughts on it :)

I am going to buy my friend one of these for his birthday. I had my eye on the 200th anniversary edition one, because it seems a little bit more "special" for a birthday present. However, should I be shooting for the classic instead seeing as it has smoother holes?

Try tightening your lips and narrowing your air stream, like you're blowing through a narrow drinks straw. You'll blow faster and more direct that way, should help you hit the second octave a little more easily 😊
The Clarke C is a difficult whistle, it does need a lot of air, but it's just practice, you'll get used to it the more you play and it should help increase your lung capacity and breathing technique :) You could get a Clarke Sweetone if you're looking for an alternative C whistle though...

You should always start with a D whistle, it's the most common key. Also you can use the same fingering to play on a C , sometimes, and also other keys. A Clarke is a nice option. You can also get a Generation or maybe a Walton or a Feadóg. I have both Clarke and feadóg.

Cognition Gnosis I think like she says in the video, with Clarke you're likely to get a good, consistent instrument across the range. Whereas with most other cheaper brands (like Generation, Waltons), you could either get one that plays great or one that is shit. My friend who has a Waltons begged me to get a Waltons assuring me it plays great, and I've heard him play it - it does. But I didn't want to risk it on luck, so went for a stable Clarke instead.
I bought five Walton's at one time, and four are great, but one of them just seemed off and doesn't play the notes well. It seems the holes are very slightly in the wrong places and it matters. I think maybe it's a quality assurance and machining issue. Clarke just has better consistency, it seems.
Thank you. That's very thoughtful. I can read simple sheet music and have watched tutorials for more difficult musical scores. What I lack is the want/time to bother learning to read it at a decent playable pace 😆 it's pure laziness I'm sure!
I think they've changed it recently and are no longer selling directly from their website. You can buy on Amazon though 😊 and in lots of music shops too!

I love the sound of the Clarke original. A lot of people knock it but to me it sounds quite flute like, and I like quieter, softer instruments
Some people (such as me) mash the windway opening down a bit (on the traditional Clarkes) with the thumb to reduce the air requirement. It doesn't change the tone but provides a little back pressure.
I have done most of my recording work on Clarke whistles. One in particular that has been played for thousands of hours and repainted twice. Tommy Makem played Clarke C a lot in the 1950/60s. I also have a Shaw C that is similarly built but has a more focused wind way. This makes it easier to play, but it's quieter.
I cannot agree more! I started with Generation, but the consistency of the Traditional Clarke, especially in the upper octave, is much better. That is the only model I play right now, and I have experienced too the issue of rust, so the brush is highly recmmended, as well as let it dry out a little bit after playing. The wooden mouthpiece works better if you play every day, even a little, to keep it wet, although soaking it in grappa also works very well (and it does not cause rust).

I originally chose a C Clarke tin whistle mainly because my recorder is in C so naively at the time I thought staying in the same key would help.

I need a lot more breath/puff or wind. You mentioned the differences with the sweet tone. So I decided to purchase a D sweet tone

i bought both a traditional (d) and a sweetone (c). i like them both, the sweetone is easier to play due to the ergonomic mouthpiece and the easier air control, and has got a clearer and louder sound. however I like the traditional's tone and looks better
Thanks so much, CutiePie. A big problem I have with the tin whistle is that I overblow. This comes from playing the Scottish bagpipes, which require a lot of wind! I try very hard to blow softly but my training usually gets the better of me.
Have you tried whistles that need a lot more air? Might be worth looking into if you have a good set of lungs! :)

You know, as much as I'm getting accustomed to the breathy tone of the original Clarke, when I hear the sweet tone on this recording I love it. It's always a bit hard to tell from these video recordings. When I play a Clarke w/the wood fipple block, it sounds much more 'airy' then when I hear it recorded. I wasn't sure but after hearing your comparison I think I want one of those sweet-tone whistles too. Thanks again! These clips you do are really helpful!

Loved the video and the review. Although I am still a beginner I have always played low D whistles but your videos have also made me want to get a high D. I never did because they all sounded very shrill to me but that Clark Classic with the wood block sounds great! So I ordered one of those the other day and love it! One thing I noticed as well, for anyone who thinks they might want to advance to the low D at some point or add the low D to what they play, that Clark Classic is perfect for them.
It requires quite alot more air than other high Ds I have played so it is a good training tool for stepping up to low D as they require quite a bit more air as well. Thanks for the review and loving this little whistle.

i am totally enchanted with my new Clark Original. Your explanation of the wood block playing better wet makes so much sense (think reeds in clarinet or oboe!) To me, for the price point, it has become my hands down favorite of my whistles. i find, too, its not so much MORE breath but more concentrated breath. And find that its less piercing than the other low priced whistles.

The Clarke Traditional can be improved by 1 sealing the sides and bottom of the wood block using silicone caulking, epoxy or other sealant. And 2 place the whistle in a vice gripping the wood block (use pads to protect the finish) then press down and bend the top of the windway to flatten and focus the air stream. This will improve the sound and playability and it will take much less breath.
Does the moisture while playing fill the same role without physically altering the whistle;as the wood expands? I just got mine after having the other popular cheap kinds and I am completely smitten with this one!
Always a pleasure to watch your videos. They are always just the right length ,informative and your bubbly nature is cheering and with sweet music makes each viewing is a little treat. I am a lousy player so won"t offer any technical comments save I do like the meg whistles and Dixon"s too. I am not a great fan of Irish music preferring Scottish, old English, country and more sedate music even classical. But I would like you to consider playing some Italian music (lol) such as O Sole Mio or/and Arrivederci Roma which both lend themselves beautifully to the whistle . Just a suggestion. BTW your Scottish accent on your Burn"s night video had me well and truly fooled and I am normally pretty good at detecting dialects other than MY OWN lass ! Talking of which do look at Burn"s famous song A Red Red Rose which sounds beautiful on the whistle. I know you would do my suggestions justice.

Welp,I just ordered a tin whistle a few days ago and it arrived today. Wooo hooo!!
I got a Clarke Sweetone in D to replace the one I accidently bent over my knee (it was laying on my bed, I didn't see it, I almost cried) and oddly enough it sounds more shrill and harsh than the last one did even though they're the same kind from the same company. But I've found as I play more I'm growing more accustom to it and I'm able to get a sweeter sound. For a Sweetone tone which I agree should really be called a Sharptune.
There's an edition of that Clarke tin whistle book that comes bundled with a CD featuring Bill Ochs working through the lessons and playing most of the tunes in the songbook. That's a nice aid for people like me who have limited musical literacy.
Love your videos. Thank you for doing them. My favourite whistle right now is a Gary Humphrey sterling silver trad D whistle with a c natural thumb hole. I strongly recommend spoiling yourself with one. Best whistle I’ve ever played / heard

I own the exact whistle in "C"...I bought it 26 years ago...I love it, especially threw my guitar pedal..y Boss ME-80! Going to play it threw my Moog Matriarch!
The original Clarke was my first tin whistle, then I bouth a Feadón in keys of C and D. Now I want to try the Dixon Pro (DX005) or maybe I should spend more and finally get a Killarney or a Shy whistle.
Recently got the Clarke original one, and that's really hard to play, after getting it then i decided to search for answears, and the Original One was meant to produce exactly that dirt sound, and it requiers much more air to play, and it will keep having that hard and dirt sound, now i got a sweetone, i think it will better for me
I thought abour getting an original or sweetone for weeks and after your review, I am glad, that I ordered the original a few days ago!

I used to have the original bllack one when I was little. I wished I still had it. I make flutes a lot, but I never aim for presise notes or keys when tuning them, to show the genuine hand made instead of factory made. I am in America. If you are ever interested, not sure, I could post a few on ebay, but not sure, how much it would cost shipping to the UK erea of the world. I sold some locally but the have sent a few flutses to a girl in Portland Oregon, but it was a which where she displayed and put My name in a video to show I made them as a payment because she wanted but did not have the money so I sent the flutes to her though it was around 20 dollars shipping from My city to hers.
From where I sit , it sounded like you did best on that Sweetone. I might get on of those hummers.

The note on the C whistle you refer to is a Bb (would be C nat on a D same fingering though) - so playing in F. The Sweetone / Meg are more in tune than the trad whistle. Nice playing as usual. My favourite is the Clarke Celtic
is there a difference between the sweettone and the celtic. I have the Celtic myself.
My local wind instrument store has clarke whistles on sale at the moment, I'm looking forward to getting a traditional. I've been practicing on a cheap reed whistle, made in india and oh man its so out of tune and really difficult to get the low and high notes. It also tends to screech unnecessarily, even after I've cleaned it, warmed it up, etc. So looking forward to getting a nicer so I can continue to get better :)

Based on this the Clarke Classic seems the best, followed by the Sweetone with the special edition being anything but!
It's a commemorative whistle, exactly the same as the Classic, but just a different colour...Though I think the D whistles seem to be better than the C when they're made in the original style 😊
Yes I understand it is basically the same underlying whistle. However, in your review mentioned that: a) It doesn't sound as sweet b) It was more breathy/more airy c) seemed less in tune d) was sharper/rougher on the holes making sliding and ornaments a little more difficult compared to the smoother painted finish. Also at circa £18, it is 20% more expensive than the Classic at £15. None of that denotes anything particularly special to me personally... despite the nice little commemorative plaque. Then again, what do I know ... I don't even play the Tin Whistle (though I do play the Baroque recorder). Anyhow, I've ordered the Classic and can't wait get started!! And I don't suppose it will be long until my lusting after an MK Pro in Black (as much as I love your green one also). As a request, how about the theme tune to "The Bridge" on your low D? I can imagine that sounding great. Keep up the great work and all the best with your channel. :-)

Stephanie, I'm assuming that you have received my explanation as to what I've been doing, if not I will send it again. Now about this video... As I mentioned in my last comment you look amazing on my new phone in 720p that looks like 720hd. I've been missing out on the beautiful details of your perfect beautifulness on that old phone that I had... I'm kind of glad that it went by the way side. This video is such a great video for anyone wanting to know all the details of the Clarke whistles. I still haven't purchased the black Clarke D whistle yet... yours and my favorite one of the three, but as I've said before, I do have the little red sweet tone. At first, I found it very hard to play, but with time it didn't seem so impossible to master and I have had some positive comments about it's tone. So your husband is not the only one that likes the sound of the little red devil. It can be tuned by heating the mouth piece in hot water and removing it by twisting and pulling. And then I use Teflon plummers tape to seal it back on... I can then move it in and out to change the pitch if needed. Also, the sound can be improved by putting some putty or paper in the hollow area in the mouth piece in front of the wind way. There is a detailed website giving the details of this improvement process online. I didn't figure this out on my own. Why use your brain when most things are on the smart phone already. The wooden block whistles probably sound better when wet because the wood swells up and any air that is escaping between the metal bore and the wood gets sealed off... I'm not sure, its just a possibility. Now, about that bore cleaning rod... I didn't know that those things were available. Thank you so much for letting us know that they are available. I've been using a shotgun bore cleaning rod and swab to clean my whistles... with clean new swabs of coarse. Now, I have a question... How is your weather? The weather here is fabulous, but a bit chilly. Down in the thirties at night again, but will be in the seventies tomorrow and some flowers and most trees are blooming like crazy... with lots of pollen everywhere. I hope your weather is getting spring like by now to some degree. Thank you for all of your hard work... I know you love what you do, but it's hard work and very much loved and appreciated by me and so many others. I've been checking out your other videos that I missed out on while my phone was offline and they are wonderful and you look more beautiful than I could ever imagine in your beautiful outfits. In this video your eyes are so clear and have such a peaceful and calming effect or affect, yet exciting. Oh, by the way... While I was offline I did have my daily dose of Cutiepie... I now have SweetTone and the Original The wood block in the Original tastes unpleasant at the moment. Hope this will wear off. Does require more air, but by far the quietest whistle I own, so useful as my husband's desk is quite close to mine. Can play this without deafening him ( or the cat). Sweet Tone, certaikny louder and sharper than the Original. Want to rake the Sweet Tone into the garden in the summer, so as these are so cheap it doesn't matter if they get dropped.
An interesting video. Clarks are a good tin whistle ' but I find the silver model will often have a loose mouthpiece which often falls out.

Just got the Sweettone C because I really like the Sweettone D. However, I am not as happy with the C. The fipple seems on crooked and the bottom note is a stretch to reach.

The red Clarke Sweetone sits next to my computer in the open air because I use it to check my tabs are correct before posting videos 😊 the whistles I play most are kept in whistle pouches (on the table I'm sat at in this video) and the whistles I don't play are in cardboard tubes under the table 🤣🤣

Bought a Clarke Sweetone in D and silver. First octave is ok. Second sounds raspy and cheap to me. I think Steph's sounds slightly better than mine. I paid about 7 GBP but kinda wished I had gone for the Feadog Pro which is only about 11 on Amazon. Prior to the Clake I bought a Lark poly and it makes has a nice tone but too much like a recorder. Plus getting into 2nd octave is very fussy / precise and its too easy to go into third or stay low.
Sound is very much personal preference, some like is sharper, done like it rounder, done like it breathy and soft. The most important thing is to give time to get to know the whistle. A lot of the time it's simply a matter of getting used to the whistles individual 'needs' so to speak. Once you know a whistle, you'll know how much air you need and when, and then you'll be able to play it at its best 😊

What's the difference between Clark Meg and Clark Sweet tone? I have a Sweet tone and the mouth piece can be removed. Is this normal?
According to the Clarke website, the Meg is made out of slightly cheaper materials, so it is priced lower.
You mention that the original Clark needs cleaning so it wont rust. How is that done since it is one piece and has a wooden block? I am thinking occasional brief soaking in water? Love your videos!
I wouldn't recommend that as it'll encourage rust and damage the wooden block. You're better off getting the Clarke whistle brush and leaving the whistle out to thoroughly dry after playing. That's about all you'll need 😊

I just subscribed to your channel. I play the hammered dulcimer. (I just started playing it again after not playing for several years.) My sister started playing the bowed psaltery and also stopped playing about the same time I did. I got her an original Clarke tin whistle and she wants to start practicing both again (so we can play together). I'm thinking of getting the Clarke Sweetone for myself for when I want to play it instead of the dulcimer. I played the flute in high school, which was a long time ago, but It looks like the tin whistle will be somewhat similar. If my sister has trouble blowing into the Clarke original, we can switch whistles. I discovered your channel when I was trying to find out what keys each played. I want to play The Galway Shawl, which is in the key of G. I've read that you can play in the key of G on the D whistle. Is this true? It would mostly be a matter of being able to play a C instead of a C#. I know my sister can play in the key of C easiest for the bowed psaltery, but it looks like it's range would also play D and G. The hammered dulcimer can obviously play more keys, so I can always change which key I play a song on that. I mostly like to play folk and Irish music and hymns.
Tin whistles are so affordable it's often worth picking up a few keys so you can play with multiple instruments. But each whistle can play extra notes, somewhat chromatically, outside of its regular diatonic scale, by half holing. I have videos explaining how the keys work, and how to half hole 😊

@@superdooper1830 From my end I own both the clarke "the meg" which was my first whistle and two celtic D whistles. The celtic has a fuller and slightly darker sound than the meg which is a little more piercing, although to me not in a bad way. I recently bought someones collection of generation whistles. They are noticably brighter, and easier to get a steady tone out of. I'd say I am a beginner but the generations appear to be a little easier to work with and the sound is very characteristically "classic tin whistle". Smaller fipples too. I am still in the fence as to what I like more. The clarkes feel to me a little smoother in the high register perhaps, but you have to work more to shape the note. They are also slightly breathier with a little more hollowness to the tone. It reads as a little more melanchloy to me. The generations are pretty consistent and in tune in the way they sound but my to celtics sound pretty different although it's the same whistle. Probably about the placement of the fipple. They are also slightly differently tuned. Play around with that at your own peril. My meg head cracked a little bit after a while.
Have you ever tried a Goldie? I’ve got one of my own in Low D and Ross Ainslie (who you might be familiar with) gave me two of his (in Alto F and Low E) and they are absolutely incredible. Probably the only make that comes close is MK. 😀
Martin Laird I'd LOVE to try a Goldie but I haven't found the chance to spend the extra cash as yet. I only really play for my own amusement so I don't really NEED another whistle, no matter how much I want one 🤣

Stephen Brown It's a whistle in the key of B flat 😊 lower sounding than your average high D tin whistle, bit not really classed as a low whistle.
Does anyone else have trouble with the dibble becoming loose? Like it shrinks? And I’ve rehydrate them in hot water but once it’s shrank it always need to be in hot eater before playing?

Thanks for the suggestion...I don't really have any high end whistles that haven't already been reviewed on my channel. My only expensive whistle was my MKpro...and I'll be honest, I don't want to spend thousands testing whistles either - especially considering this UA-cam channel is a hobby - not a job ;) I have Susato whistles and a Dixon Pro high D which you can hear on some of my latest videos, but I won't be splashing out anything pricey as I don't feel the need - the whistles I have at the moment cover all my needs.
If you decide to get something high end, do let us know your thoughts on it :)

I am going to buy my friend one of these for his birthday. I had my eye on the 200th anniversary edition one, because it seems a little bit more "special" for a birthday present. However, should I be shooting for the classic instead seeing as it has smoother holes?
You could try a D in the 200 edition, it should be the size then 😊

I really struggle with A (upper Octave) on the Sweetone, not sure if it's just me being inexperienced?
Try tightening your lips and narrowing your air stream, like you're blowing through a narrow drinks straw. You'll blow faster and more direct that way, should help you hit the second octave a little more easily 😊

The Clarke C is a difficult whistle, it does need a lot of air, but it's just practice, you'll get used to it the more you play and it should help increase your lung capacity and breathing technique :) You could get a Clarke Sweetone if you're looking for an alternative C whistle though...

You should always start with a D whistle, it's the most common key. Also you can use the same fingering to play on a C , sometimes, and also other keys. A Clarke is a nice option. You can also get a Generation or maybe a Walton or a Feadóg. I have both Clarke and feadóg.

Clarke are the best tin whistles to get, I had a Walton’s tin whistle and they are trash. I don’t know how Walton’s tin whistle is still in business
Cognition Gnosis I think like she says in the video, with Clarke you're likely to get a good, consistent instrument across the range. Whereas with most other cheaper brands (like Generation, Waltons), you could either get one that plays great or one that is shit. My friend who has a Waltons begged me to get a Waltons assuring me it plays great, and I've heard him play it - it does. But I didn't want to risk it on luck, so went for a stable Clarke instead.
I bought five Walton's at one time, and four are great, but one of them just seemed off and doesn't play the notes well. It seems the holes are very slightly in the wrong places and it matters. I think maybe it's a quality assurance and machining issue. Clarke just has better consistency, it seems.

Thank you. That's very thoughtful. I can read simple sheet music and have watched tutorials for more difficult musical scores. What I lack is the want/time to bother learning to read it at a decent playable pace 😆 it's pure laziness I'm sure!

I think they've changed it recently and are no longer selling directly from their website. You can buy on Amazon though 😊 and in lots of music shops too!

Hi! I have a doubt and I would be very grateful if someone could resolve it. I have bought a Clarke Sweetone whistle and it arrived with a considerable fold inside of it. I would like to know if these whistles have it or not. Thanks for all :D

That's perfectly normal. All Clarke whistles have the fold because they are conical in shape, like an ice-cream cone 😊
