If you have one of those inexpensive practice amps, the best mod you can do is to upgrade the speaker. Another thing is to add a horn tweeter. I had an amp that sounded dead, it made it sound like it was time to change the strings - they sounded dead. I added a horn tweeter and it woke the amp up big time. I had used a cheap $2 horn tweeter I got from surplus. Something else you can do is play with the opening size in the back if it is an open back cabinet. Changing the opening size by blocking off can really alter the sound. In a closed back cabinet, you can add fiberglass insulation lightly packed to get deeper tones.
I put this same speaker in my twenty year old Crate practice amp. It is amazing!! It's a solid state amp with a bunch of effects but it was like buying a new amp. That was about five years ago and now another young player is using and loving it.
. These are two speakers build with different approach in mind. The G8C is designed to sound lower due to deeper in shape membrane has more surface and alows to push more air at low range .. To prevent phase distortion it has sectioned membrane which is another great advantage .This distinate it to audio and Hi FI. Jensen was exspected to add expression exactly to electric guitar. Two spakers for two different applications - For combined vocal and acoustic guitar I would prefer G8C, for playing electric with band Jensen. Also better Al NIco magnet alows more loudness which is precious when competes with say percussion . In this case wide sounding is not so critical.
I give a slight nod to the G8C. They both sound really good to my ears, but they have completely different character. The fact that they both sound good is a testament to the amp as well. and I can hear that it compresses and overrides really well.
I bought a '59 tweed Princeton in '76 or '77. I *hated* the Jensen that it came with. I quickly sought out a replacement and bought an 8" JBL 2110 speaker. More efficient (Important when you only have 6W) wider bandwidth with more low end and more high end. I still have the amp and speaker and have never regretted that purchase. Many have lusted after it. Sounds amazing with blues harp. Sadly JBL doesn't make that speaker anymore. I wish they did, because I'd buy more of them.
Love the jensen, much better clarity and note definition while still have great grit and punch. . A lot of people think its "just a stock speaker" but there is a good reason why. WGS sounded muddy and fizzy...no thanks.
Great demo I have a Gibson GA5 has an 8 INCH speaker I was thinking of changing out to a Jensen P8R alnico they also used 8” in the early Champs back in the day
Well done! Yes they sound drastically different. This may have something to do with…everything! You couldn’t ask for two more different 8” speakers. Smooth cone vs ribbed cone. Small magnet vs big magnet. Old vs new. Alnico vs ceramic. Thanks for the effective demo and careful setup. In my opinion the WGS sounds much better.
I'm 21 years old I play country rockabilly bluegrass and Blues and folk I use Jensen P8R 8inch speaker in my tube amp I play nothing but clean my style is more like Luther Perkins I also use Thomastik flatwound strings my own custom set 8 11 18w 28 39 50 I forgot to mention I also use a Fab Danelectro delay pedal
I think the best sounding was the original. I like the jensen more than the warehouse speaker. I like the fuller more bassy tone of the warehouse speaker but it's a bit muddy compared to the jensen.
At a moderate volume level on my computer the Jensen sounds like it has fuller bottom end and mids. To my ear it beats the heck out of the new speaker.
Since the Jensen seems to provide a cleaner and more articulate sound, would it offer the most flexibility if you wanted to add any effects? The Warehouse appears to be naturally muddier, so would the choices be more limited?
How does a new Jensen compare to the old Jensen? I have an old Gibson GA5 (late 50's - early 60's) with the original Jensen 8" AlNiCo and am wondering if it needs to be replaced.
Both sound good, just different. It would be cool if you could squeeze a 10 inch speaker in there, in some amps you can but maybe not this one. Or running it to a 1x12 could be cool like that Film O Sound speaker!
The Jensen sounded better overall to my ears. Might be the mic - there are always variables since I’m not there in person to hear it directly. The Warehouse sounded like the tone knob was rolled way down to me.
The Jensen is much brighter than the G8C. You said that the G8C sounds “fuller”. IMHO, since it’s darker, that could be because it has more bottom end. So it really depends on what guitar you are using and what kind of music you prefer playing and listening to. For me, the Jensen is more useful because you could roll off the top and get nearly the same crunchy sound as the G8C. The original speaker also sounds more vintage, as in vintage rock, so is more appealing if you like 60s and 70s rock. I would keep that original speaker. At least, keep it, because one day I bet you will want to put it back in.
You really have to use that Warehouse at much higher volumes for a few weeks before you can make a realistic comparison. All speakers need to be broken in.
G8C is woofy at volume.. The Jensen is an easy call - not flabby and will cut through the mix, but wasn't harsh (key bit)... Kinda fun to play a flubbed out Champ, but in any band context it's mush... Jensen all day long...
Great comparison. Reading the comments, seems I'm in the minority here. I thought the Warehouse speaker was not just better, but a massive upgrade in tone across the board. Great cleans, thick and full, the speaker sounded *bigger* than the Jensen. Looking for a new speaker for my Monoprice SR Champ clone, and I think I've found it!
i use this warehous in different amps ore boxes....allways the same result: missing sparkel ore crisp charakter. the green jensen p8r in 4 ore 8 ohm are the right one for this gretsch amp!!! the warehouse and the jupider speakers are to muddy, and it seems both the same chasis and cones ...just other brandings. sorry of my english iam from germany.
The 50s Jensen 8J11 is a speaker I have a bit of experience with both originals and also reconing. Having done multiple tests with various materials and techniques on recones, I have discovered that the difference of alloys in the vintage speakers is one of the most significant variable that makes them more chimey, punchy, holographic, easy to bloom, have quack/bark, and have that loose, chewy character that is a lot more captivating than modern speakers. The modern manufacturers can't get the vintage tone and never will. The G8C has a stiffer, more 2D presentation which does not bloom as much when you dig in. It also has some glare and harshness on the highs which is what we expect for modern alloys. If you let me recone the G8C, I can make it have the character of the 8J11 but also handle more power. The key to the tonal aspects are in the details. Also, the way you connect the speaker wires to the terminals affects the tone. Also
The Jensen sounds a lot better to me. Really suits the style of amp.

They both sound great in their own way. Thanks for the demonstration!

Like you said, they both sound cool in their own way. You have a nice collection of unique amps.
Thanks for watching.

right !!! the best joice

That Jensen Rules !

Jensen . More complexity clean and overdriven. IMO

I have the same amp and recently replaced the original Jensen for a new Jensen. I prefer that sound over the warehouse
How does a new Jensen compare to the old Jensen? I have an old Gibson GA5 (late 50's - early 60's) with the original Jensen 8" AlNiCo and am wondering if it needs to be replaced.
I think the Jensen sound was defined and way less fizzy. I think The Weber speaker is a good one. 15 watt 8" alnico. I got mine through mojotone.
Both sound good, just different. It would be cool if you could squeeze a 10 inch speaker in there, in some amps you can but maybe not this one. Or running it to a 1x12 could be cool like that Film O Sound speaker!
Jensen has alnico magnet, warehouse has ceramic.bass response better w wharehouse.i agree with producers assessment.
The Jensen sounded better overall to my ears. Might be the mic - there are always variables since I’m not there in person to hear it directly. The Warehouse sounded like the tone knob was rolled way down to me.
I liked the Jensen.
Jensen has a clearer tone, g8c sounds warmer, just different tones.
that jensen is like 40% of the sound of that amp
I'll bet they would sound great mixed together.
Thanks for this !!!!! really cool !!!! i like the Jensen !!!!!! i dig the " thinness "
Amazing project
LOVE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The warehouse sounds great!

I agree
I like the amp stuff but miss the guitar restoration vids too. Take the blue paint off the epiphone !
The old Jensen Wins hands down.
I think you have to give the new speaker about 10 hours then do this again.
Both sound good in their own unique voicings, ..new one has more bass punch
You really have to use that Warehouse at much higher volumes for a few weeks before you can make a realistic comparison. All speakers need to be broken in.

👍
Jensen for me
Jensen by a mile
I'm going to put the American vintage g8c in a Laney prism combo 20 watt. The factory speaker sucks .
Great comparison.
Reading the comments, seems I'm in the minority here.

Also
I think the jenson alnico has better vintage sound
The warehouse speaker is better for modern.
In that amp...jenson 100%
The Jensen is an Alnico magnet and the Warehouse is Ceramic. You're comparing apples to oranges.
You are correct, sir. I like both apples and oranges but they taste very different. Don't they?
Which did you prefer? They sound different, but if you had to load it into your cab which would your choose. I liked the Jensen a lot better.
g8c better mid
