Rainer Landfermann recently released a solo album and his vocals seem to have held up pretty well. So whatever he's doing, it's working for him.

Rainer Landfermann is definetly my favorite vocalist. I have heard a lot of insane vocals but he does it in a way that it's believable unlike other vocalists like for example Nattram from Silencer. Those are just too funny.

@@jayman3873 Somebody recommended me Silencer a couple of weeks ago, and I checked it out, but didn't like it because of the vocals. This is definitely better, but still... it's an acquired taste which I haven't acquired yet. I'm into black/death metal for more than 20 years already but this is something else 🙂

Many people speculate that Rainer is Nattramn really, their vocals are pretty similar to each other. Also the sudden disappearance of Rainer for a while is suspicious, and as Nattramn didn't reveal his true identity yet, I believe he was, indeed, Rainer Landfermann

@@pipipipipipipipi_ lol nah his voice is very different. Also his appearance if you look at pics. Like his hair is very different and his figure. I personally can't stand the vocals of Nattram cause they sound too funny and not believable. And Silencer is swedish.

@@natalie-kj4om well I think Rainer could play a role in Silencer, and the pictures of Nattramn maybe aren't real iykyk they could just get some other guy to do the photoshoot
the vocals are pretty similar in range and in Silencer there is just more strain on them

I love your reaction at the beginning lol. And to think this track is an album opener! This is one of my favorite black metal albums - the absolutely crazy vocals, vicious guitar riffs, drumming that never gets boring (can be a problem in this genre). It can take a while to "get it", but it's worh it.
And I have to say, I disagree with the request note - Bethlehem isn't a DSBM band. Depression and suicide are often the themes, but the band has this aggressive and sometimes sardonic approach, while typical DSBM band is pure sadness and misery (but not in a negative way, if that makes sense).
As for the lyrics, those are heavily metaphorical, surreal, or just nonsensical, like this part from next song on the album:
    "Avoiding death means
    losing the game of banishment
    my smell is the depravity,
all the empty milk bottles are reflected
    in my surface"

    • @Cseplesz
      @Cseplesz Рік тому

and the album title means: You have to kill yourself. It is sardonic (Lufstaeht's Blaeh - on the SUIZID album is a good example), but they are one of the forefathers of the BDSM scene. Bartsch has had a couple of hangman episodes (more close people killed themselves observable) that inspired him a lot to do these albums.

@@j.67That's from the song Aphel-Die schwarze Schlange from the same album, true. The whole Bethlehem catalogue is full of such weird lines, I would even dare to say that they got more surreal on albums after Dictius te necare. The radio drama sequences on Schatten aus der Alexander Welt contain some of the most bizarre lyrics I know, I"d say up there with stuff like The Residents, Captain Beefheart and Scott Walker's last solo record.

  • @_Helm_

Think of this in the 'atmospheric metal' lens discussion over My Dying Bride. It's a similar prism, this band called it 'dark metal' to differentiate from the black metal base. The unhinged screaming is attached to an overwhelming sense of alienation in the lyric, married to a misanthropic aloofness that indicates a heavy dissociation from the moral and reality of this world, yet the physical pain is a constant reminder that as far out as the brain has gone behind the written lyric of this music, existence remains an insufferable bore. That's the emotional mix here, and it's inscrutable because of language barriers but also layers of metal history obfuscation: why this particular type of heavy metal with this particular fast - slow dichotomy, with this vocal? Chasing the genealogy is convoluted in nerd genre terms. There is an element of humour here, there is poetry, there is beauty. Not all of this is melodramatic and flowery, some of it is quite, for a lack of better term modern in execution, it's sardonic but often apologetic and yeah totally unhinged when considered on relation to the vocal delivery. I think discussion of the vocal overshadows the interesting music, but I wouldn't generally suggest a deep immersion in this style because its aesthetic underpinnings are also its philosophical underpinnings: music inspired by opiates, for people who are suffering on this world, often talking of the topic of suicide. How much of this one needs in their lives up to each listener, my interest is protected from an ironic distance afforded by actually understanding enough about what's going on here to know that it's having a conversation with itself and I am listening in, it's not instructive to me. Limits to that sort of voyeuristic interest in things like this. Bethlehem are quite interesting and often amazing but it's bad vibes all around the band

An interesting fact about the vocals: Jürgen Barsch (bassist, main composer and basically boss of the band) once told, the vocalist Rainer Landfermann only could sing 3 song back in days before his voice broke, which is the main reason, why they never performed live with him.

Very... Silencer inducing "anxiety" music (though this band came waaaay before Silencer)... but more in control of the emotions they want to express. I love Dictius Te Necare. It's my favorite from this band. Haven't listened to the last one from them, but Bethlehem from 2016 was pretty good too, and way more experimental. I also like Onielar a lot, so that's another plus. It is some black metal, some dsbm too... but I think there's more in there, they were kinda setting the stage for dark metal I guess, but I can't say I know many more bands that adopted this genre. I think over the years it turned out to be more a style of their own.

I'm not the biggest fan of the rawer, punkish forms of BM to begin with, but add these kind of hardcore-ish vocals and making them so front-and-center and that combination made this a really tough listen for me. Definitely not my jam, though I will say I appreciated some of the riffing and the calmer, more atmospheric moments. But to quote the great Randy Jackson, it's a no for me, dawg.

You gotta listen to Shining (at least albums after The Eerie Cold) to get a grasp of really experimental and suprisingly technical black metal in the same vein of Bethlehem (which vocalist of Shining admits being influenced by them and had an albu with them in fact) and mixes black metal with 70's prog, folk, blues, jazz and doom. Highly recommended.

Only a few minutes in, and I can already tell this is one of those bands that does themselves an extreme disservice with their purposefully poor production. This is one of those songs I would love with just slightly more thought put into the transitions and production, it certainly has the energy, merely lacking the sonic weight to bring through the “vibe” it’s going for. For more in this style, I would hope someone suggests ghost bath, they do the same genre, but in a much more emotionally “parseable” way, similarly digestible, but easier to “feel”.
The production (especially vocally) is better, and composition is not based in the “avant-gardeness” of the sounds and textures in terms of their time, but rather in the sounds and textures as a colour and tool to create a composition.
