He said 158 Denbigh street Feilding. I grew up at 152 Denbigh street Feilding. He was truly always good with the pass. We used to spend time at each other's back and front yards and pass the ball around. Play bullrush, scrag and even cops and robbers. I said to him once when we were just kids, "you're going to be an All Black one day " and he was modest in reply, almost like that's not even a possibility. I'm so happy for him that all his work paid off and he made it to the top. Good on ya mate!
Admitedly, from a Moari growing up in Australia 🇦🇺 originally born in New Zealand & being a Smith, myself I have always admired his ball passing skills truly amazing 👏 " Quick to react, - Fast to realse, - and Accurate to deliver to the target". Pure poetry..🇳🇿
Mastering a easy basic skill and having it as a point of difference to enhance ones progress is truly the measurement of being focussed and extremely patient....attributes one of the greatest halfback NZ has ever produced! But,if I ever was a coach,I would pick a taller stronger half-back, who has all of Smith's skill-set but who,at times when hes not passing can be a extra forward(as you know halfbacks are always around and supplying ball to the forwards)and use his strength as a added asset in the ruck and mauls! Half backs are mostly short-ass in stature!I wonder where that notion came from and why it still persists today! Every position has a perceived recommended notion! The props have have bulk for the stability of the scrum, the rowers height for the lineouts and the loose forwards mobility for the breakdown but surely you don't have to have a short halfback as the status quo.....wouldn't it be better having the halfback a extra forward that can pass as well?
@@williamfiji6946 True, but not as per se and not always in the ruck, more like a when its needed and if the rest of the team know his secondary role then they will anticipate it,and at anytime, all can play the halfback role( like its done now when the half is caught in the ruck)when he is at the bottom of the ruck or on his feet stealing the ball? Anyway a hard, running halfback with size and ball finesse is the future, surely?
@Superdude70 set built for each position probably evolved and eventually became the norm! Making sense for bulk, height and mobility!Still be a wise man to tweak positions to have bulk, height and mobility in one player let alone a whole scrum and that is the trail of the ultimate forward pack! It's like I don't understand why selections for the back line are all muddled in the sense in the normal mould for a halfback as you have said need to be of a lower stature to mix it with the crowded forward play, but by instincts any sized player depending on their agility can evade and move like a short ass half! Which goes back to set selection criteria for positions!Me if I pick a backline,my centres will be as fast if not faster then my wingers and fullback!Basically they will all have the speed of wingers from num 10 to 15 regardless! That in it self takes care of all the speed I need to play cover and defend more so that slower halfs, slower crash centres ! So a tweaked team selected on speed, power, size and mobility away from the normal set built for positions is what all unions should strive to find, groom and select for a higher success,I suppose?

Good point. I think if you use halves as an extra forward, you won't be quick enough to attend all the rucks and deliver quick ball
