I'm really glad to see free (as in freedom) software for music production getting some attention!
I happen to be making videos about these for years. I work exclusively on Linux and Ardour is my favorite DAW so far. There's also many amazing free (and open-source) plug-ins available only for Linux.
Also: Ardour 6 is bound to release pretty soon, so we can expect a lot of improvements in this workstation.
    Rock on!

I've installed Ardour 6 in my Ubuntu Desktop.. and it is not free... it has a free/demo license, but it will mute all sound every 10 minutes. Do you know if Ardour is totally free inside Ubuntu Studio?

Professionally I have to work a lot with MacOS. Privately I made 10 years ago the switch from Windows to Ubuntu and I never looked back :-) How you said, it works. It takes some years to become really knowledgeable with Linux but the freedom and fun it provided me over all the years is unrivaled.

You can rescue some pretty old machines using Linux. I'm using a ten year old Dell laptop with 4GB ram, Debian with LXDE gui, and fired up Ardour with enough tracks to record a band. Good to see a video about using Linux and recording.

I slapped Ubuntu Studio onto my old laptop, last year, to give it a new lest of life.
    Lenovo T61 - Intel Core2 Duo T7500 2.20GHz, 4GB RAM
Works great. The Ubuntu Studio distro has all the fiddly audio routing set up for you.
The DAW Ardour took a little effort to learn after using Studio One Pro but it kept me doing music during the period I was finding a new place to live.
Most of my stuff went into storage and this lappy became my lifeline for 6 months.

Nice video! I just missed your recording set-up. How did your do the drums and the bass tracks? Did you plug your guitar straight into the interface and used amp modeling plug-ins or did you use the Torpedo Live? I recently started using Bandlab Cakewalk, which is also free for windows. Great upgrade over Audacity. Audacity is fun and easy, but as soon as I moved into Cakewalk and started messing with the vst plug-ins I've realized how much I was missing.

Hey mate, love your videos and I have been noticing a trend towards cheaper or more affordable gear on your channel. Although this is awesome, I also get the vibe that you are now a bit negative with more expensive gear in regards to hand wired high end amps and expensive instruments in some of the videos. I just think that no matter how much money you make, you can always eventually save for that dream thing. I work at IGA and teach guitar so I don't earn a lot of money haha. My first dream amp was a two rock amp and it actually led me on a great path to finding my dream tone. Your channel helped me with that through your studio pro videos so thanks!. Your recent videos work very well for the general players but as a professional player I love seeing your reviews of ALL gear regardless of price. I think many people are willing to pay more money for what inspires them and makes them feel a certain way. I love all gear reviews, whether cheap or expensive....but money is just money. If you spend a bit more for something that makes you feel a special way, I reckon that's totally worth it. I earn about 40 grand a year and I just spent $1600 on a cabinet.... but I loveeeeee it.

can I use Mooer GE200 as DAW/sound card, and connect it via Micro USB port on GE200 directly to Ubuntu laptop?
what if I add a NUX Looper after the GE200, would it still work if we take the Micro USB output from that looper pedal?
sorry if my questions are too dumb, but I'm a total newbie in this game, trying to figure stuff out.
of course I can play/record on GE200, and save to 6 hours looper, and then transfer WAV files to the computer to edit.
but I'd rather use the Reaper / Ardour to record into the beats time frames, so that everything would be always in sync / tempo.

I’m not a big fan of Linux for audio production because I’m heavily invested into virtual instruments and effects (both AU and VST), and unfortunately Linux isn’t great for that. (And yes, I know there’s few virtual instruments and effects on Linux too now, but it’s absolutely no comparison to what we have on Mac/Windows, and Wine is just another layer I could live without). Now, if all you need is to record couple of audio tracks (some kind of computized version of the old tape multi-tracks recorder), then it will work fine enough.
