Hmmm, I have an Ikon 2.2 on the back and what I've noticed is that if the trail is wet (more than damp, but not quite muddy) the tire seems to be "sucked" in and rolling resistance increases noticeably, it dam near stopped me dead one day. (PITA) but I have confirmed it IS the rear tire by simply changing the tire and the issue went away immediately... The trail has to be more than "damp" (kinda like you would get on a "dewy" morning) and not quite "wet" (like a day or two after it rains). I have two rims, so disc and sprocket cage and it was done, easy but still a PITA. On dry trails I have no issues with it, it's just coming into winter in south Texas, so "wet" weather is a given and unless you just don't ride AT ALL, the trails will be kinda "wet" . I'm currently running an Aggressor, and the issue has disappeared. *** As a note - I don't ride mud because Texas mud is more clay and STICKS to everything!!! I've yet to find a tire it doesn't "stick" to...including a Shorty. (which none of the local shops even bother to carry if that tells you anything)...
Interesting. Honestly I’ve only ever used the Ikons in dry but there are one set of trails that hold moisture and they do turn into “slicks” while I ride. The rolling resistance has never hit me like that before though. What pressure were you running them at? On my hardtail I usually run the rear at about 26-28psi.
I run Ardent Race 2.35 F and 2.25 R on a fully rigid XC bike at 15psi and 20psi, respectively on 27mm rims, and they perform great on hardpack and loose over hard. I weigh almost 200lbs with gear but choose my lines meticulously and stay very light on the bike and never drop/jump more than 3 feet. They suck in mud, do ok in sand. There's minimal squirm and only if I land funny. I will be changing to a 2.25 regular Ardent in the front for more confidence in corners, hopefully.
Great vid!!! I love the Ikon's and the Rekon's....Damn good tires and seem to have hard enough compound to tolerate the streets without wearing down so fast!!!
That's the reason I chose them but didn't fit them yet. Used to have crossmark on the 26" and tried to find something similar to that on the 29".currently wearing Michelin wild grip front and continental race King rear. Bought it used and I'm sure this tyreset isn't suited to the capabilities of the bike wich is orbea alma 10. Also I ride mostly dry hard packed unpaved roads and commute and I get the feedback that it doesn't currently roll to its full potential
I encounter some crack of rubber on the profile area, only a year after I purchased them. According to MAXXIS I need to replace them. This is the first time I encounter that kind of problem. Prior to their decision, I asked them if there is an expiration (similar to car tire), they said there is no expiration, but need to replace it if their is a rot on the tire. Thank you
I’m not sure I couldn’t go back to the skinny bars. I’ve taken a few of my resto projects out and they just feel so sketchy with those little bars!! Haha. I have no idea how we rode those back in the day...
What size internal rims are you running? Thinking of getting ikon 2.2, but have 30mm internal rims, not sure if the 2.2 are too skinny for my rims. Thanks!
I will try the Ikon’s in summer, as enjoying the minions grip up front during the current winter and local rocky terrain. I went for reckon 2.4 in the rear however, and notice quicker acceleration without much of a grip penalty vs minions.
I’ve tried the non “race” ardent but only upfront. It wasn’t terribly confidence inducing on the heavy leans. Not that the skinner Ikons are better in the grip department but I can feel the transition better across the width of the tire.
Seems like way to much pressure to me. Im running 27.5s with 2.35s and run 20/22 front and 24 rear. Anything over 24 in the rear and she beats me up bad(hardtail)and lower than 24 it gets a bit squirmy. With 29 wheels seems you could lower your pressure. Im 185 pounds geared up and bike weighs 30lbs.
Mr. J Grobbelaar like as in how many miles have I put on them? If that’s what your asking I put around 400 miles on them and they’re still going strong.

Best review. Nice trail. Really nice clean riding

Try using Ardent in front with Ikon as rear. You will have a better balance of control and speed.
Is it same wide??
@@marketinghandal9403 yes. You can get get same size...but it is not bad to get the front ones a bit bigger. Like 2.4 in front and 2.3 rear.
Cool video going to get these tires now. Great info!
Love that trail, where is it?

Great... Now I have to go ride Bloomer... On my 29er hardtail... with 2.2's just to remember what it was like... Nice review.
Thanks!! Still hard to believe at one point we rode tires under 2.0!! Lol
@@thatrandombikeguy I know! Next we will be doing rides with narrow bars!!!

Hi, i am in the same situation, how is your ikon turn out?
I will try the Ikon’s in summer, as enjoying the minions grip up front during the current winter and local rocky terrain. I went for reckon 2.4 in the rear however, and notice quicker acceleration without much of a grip penalty vs minions.
2.0 used to WIDE back in the day!
I'm gonna run a Vitt Morsa 2.6 front and Iko 2.2 rear.
I went with ardent race front and rear for a lot of what you mentioned. Did you ever consider them?
I’ve tried the non “race” ardent but only upfront. It wasn’t terribly confidence inducing on the heavy leans. Not that the skinner Ikons are better in the grip department but I can feel the transition better across the width of the tire.

Great video dude. Kudos
Can these be used for gravel?
Sham Rock absolutely. I love these for grinding out gravel miles.
Price of the tyres?
How are they now that a year has gone by.. ?
One more dumb question.. you used them for both front and rear correct? Wait one more... do I have to set these up tubeless??
How's the sidewall holding up?
Great so far. Keeping them clean can be a chore but as far as holding air/sealant they’ve been great.
@@thatrandombikeguy hey any tips on keeping them clean? What product do u use? Or just Normal soap and hard labour?
Maxxis Ikon or Continental Race King?
Just bought Continentals. The front came defective. Sent back and got Maxxis Ikon for rear and Ardent front.
Same question! 😂
Hi. Do you still have them?
Mr. J Grobbelaar I do. And I like them so much I actually just got another set for this years XC race season.
How many km plus minus?
Mr. J Grobbelaar like as in how many miles have I put on them? If that’s what your asking I put around 400 miles on them and they’re still going strong.
Thanks. Iam deciding between the Ikon and the Vittoria Barzo with Ardent infront
Was that sticker at 1:03 for me? hahah
Lmao!!
Skin Walls are NOT recommended for tubeless! Something about the material reacting to sealant.
That is some horrid color combinations right there...
Hater
Actually its really nice :)
