    An Awesome vice (never knew such a thing even existed), and some massive courage on your part to hack apart your gorgeous bench to fit it.
    Looking forward to some projects which put it to the test. Oh no, we won't be able to follow along. Never mind, proxy woodworking is man-cave fantasy stuff! Keep it coming and stay safe and strong.

    James,
    What model is the smaller Emmert’s vise? Great video. I’m jealous😂

    My grandfather was a pattern maker, but sadly he passed away before I grew up and could learn anything from him. His furniture was ridiculous.

    Hi James, love the channnel, but I have to disagree with how you mounted the vice. Way to much work for no real benifit. I have the large one and it only protrudes 2 3/4". Also, recessing the back jaw inhibits the rotation of the vice unless you swing it out of the mortise.

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  Рік тому

      The reason I inset it into the bench is I do a lot of long joining along the face of the bench. If I had it sticking out I would not be able to do that as well. Also it would stick out a considerable amount more than the other vices getting in the way of going along the bench. The Jaws can still rotate fully even with it recessed all the way back in. And that is the way that the company originally suggested be installed. That way you can use the rest of the bench face for larger pieces. All of the salesman samples had it recessed into the bench. I talk about the reasoning a good bit more on the other video. In the end there's no right or wrong way to it. Just personal preference.

    ...Can also mount it outboard first and decide if you prefer the position before mounting it with rear jaw flush (but still create the mortise for the screw long enough as if flush mounting).
    I found having both jaws proud far better in use. Flush mount obstructs handling boards along the long side of the bench, leaving no room for your hand. Sounds like not a big deal, but if you need to clamp something long and heavy, the way you can hold the item just to get it in the vise is limited. A lot easier when there's room for your hand between the item and the side of the bench. It can also reduce the amount of long angled things it will hold in it's "normal" position, slightly.
    Having worked with my Emmert for a decade I've never once had the need to mount it with the rear jaw flush, and I love being able to easily load a long heavy board one handed while operating the screw with the other. Even in my cramped space it does not bother me it sticks out another inch or so.
