Oh
Why does this song have so many different versions
There's the demos, the intro un-reversed, and the normal version (this one).
Blundera Bluez Dont forget the remixes and additional random versions.
As for why there’s so many, they probably wanted to perfect it.
Y'all are forgetting the two synths. Not to mention the Reamplification Effects.
Because, like the mind, the song has many layers.
Willyhoo this song already is perfect
The distorted version is so much better to me- ESPECIALLY when it gets to the "see how the serfs" part, it goes HARD man.

At 1:40, they're chanting "axon dendrite." A dendrite is the input part of a neuron cell that receives electric signals, and an axon is the output that transmits signals. Really fitting for a song about electric shock therapy causing insanity. Even more so when you think about how they're singing the output first and the input second. Everything's all backwards.
I'm amazed you even managed to catch that and tell what they're saying in the background. How'd you do that?
Nice analysis! And I got the lyrics from Tally Hallmanac (link in the description). Here's the axon dendrite part by itself from "Hawaii Part II Part II": ua-cam.com/video/QtlQHIRnCHs/v-deo.html
@@UCttreL0wz5XU2EaP5ondrsw Oh, okay! Thanks! There are a lot of background voices in this song that I'd like to know what they're saying. Especially in the reverse first half, I find it's a bit easier to hear them with head phones since it does sound a little different on the left and right side.
I like how it switches from left and right
For some reason, after I learned that's what they're saying in the background, it's harder for me to hear the actual lyrics now than that

I think the non distorted doesn't have the bass being the first half of the song of course
I LOVE IT TOO!
I know im super late but its probably because the distorted version is the reversed part, unreversed. They didnt add any distortions to the reversed part because you wouldnt be able to tell, same thing with the base :]
or at least thats my theory
i find it really interesting how the judge says "condemn him to the infirmary" vs "sentence him to the infirmary" or something similar, like he knows that this is going to be equally as nightmarish as being condemned to death or hell
i agree.
I find it interesting that for the most part the protagonist is the only voice with distortion, and it goes away at the end when he's 'treated'.
It doesn't it is just less chaotic without the shocks.

The 8-bit esque instruments at the end make this version wayyy better than the others imo
Demo 4 has more 8bit I think
It also even connects the song more to labyrinth, which I love
Especially leading into Labyrinth.
It’s played on Tesla Coils, or at least a synth of them, which is really interesting considering this song is about electroshock therapy
it carries into labyrinth and works well
“Fuck! The vinyl isnt working Joe!”

Around 1:21 you can hear a small piece of piano from Murders, I know that people have probably noticed that already but I find it very interesting that as the singer starts spiraling into an abuse induced spiral of madness they reflect upon the death of their lover
if you've listened to the album more than 3 times you'd notice this by now so yea

It might just be me but I interpret that clanking nose on the beat near the end of the song as a hammer hitting an ice pick for a lobotomy
I never noticed that until now and now I can’t unhear it.
As someone who's been diagnosed with schizophrenia, this song gives me that episode feel. The distortions, the quiet talking and whispers are like my auditory hallucinations, scattered thoughts etc. Not to mention this song is (I think) about electro convulsive therapy (or someone recieving it), severe schizophrenics and other mental illnesses receive ECT.
The story as it goes is that this guy named Simon went into a forest to look at nature and found a girl that he had met before who is now dead (this is found from the song murders), nobody else could be found and all evidence was stacked against him and so he gets a trial where he knows he can't win, so he pleads insanity hoping to be released without punishment. Instead, he gets forced into ECT which causes him actual insanity where the other songs take place. The overall story of the music is honestly fascinating and it's pretty entertaining to hear other people's thoughts on it.
@@Acenthus someone said the guy died during the whole thing. Is that true?
@@Inna_7284 well both are unconfirmed theories, kinda just up to your interpretation. Mine takes it more at face value while that one's a bit more metaphorical.
This song feels like going through an autistic meltdown when everything and everything is so overwhelming. The song sounds like what I hear when I go through those episodes. Especially around this part right here 1:43
@@ntkdeath same. I am Glad I have friends who understand.

That's everyones favorite part
@@davide.9576 which one?
@@user-gv3pg7tj9o Demo 4
From 2:16 to around 3:00 there's a repeating sound that sounds very metallic, like hitting an ice pick with a hammer. I choose to interpret this as representation of some of the first lobotomies.
(POSSIBLY GRAPHIC DESCRIPTION OF LOBOTOMY BELOW)
it's a bit obvious about the "ice pick being hammered" sound here that the first lobotomies were performed with a simple hammer and-yeah- an ice pick. No special tools. They'd lift your eyelids up and insert the ice pick, hammering it in (I may be off a bit) by 5 inches to get your frontal lobe. Since this song is about the electric chair, it's possible they tried to lobotomize the criminal before their death?
Edit: came back to this and realized I had spaced things wrong!
Yoooo I never realized that :O
from the line "see how the serfs work the ground" i figured it was like the classic visual of prisoners being forced to mine rocks or whatever
@@peptalkk_4595 same
Well, this interpretation actually makes a bit more more sense, considering the song seemingly being about electroshock therapy, instead of the execution-type electric chair.
@@Hackerackerackeracker Well, he said that they were a criminal. In the album, it is confirmed simon is not guilty.
Not to be dramatic or anything, but this song changed my entire life. Like no joke, it nearly perfectly depicts a mental breakdown, and listening to it during one really helped me sort through and start to repair my mental and emotional state

Hey, I can relate, or at least i've got no grounds to make fun
one of my biggest life lessons came from--no shit--a song called "I Don't Have A Dick"
“Doctor I can’t tell if I’m not me” is a verse that plays in my head on an almost daily basis.
Painfully accurate.
It has so much meaning especialy because there are 2 voices then
i kinda think about it as some sorta musical :P
@@actualizereality perhaps a... Miracle Musical? XD
@@starrynight1165 oh i get it now.
Also perfectly fits for Pokey in Mother: Oleander!
1:21 literally makes me feel like I'm going insane, which I know is the point but like seriously they did such a good job with it it's genuinely scary
i like the little labyrinth 8-bit thing at 2:58 - 3:03
Pay attention to the piano of that entire part and the whistling at 2:34, theres a thicker link
STOP STOP STOP STTOOOOOPPPPP
Also the piano at 1:21 is from Murders
My favorite part is 1:19-1:40. I mean, the whole song reminds me of being stuck in a nightmare, but for me this part perfectly emulates the feeling of your mind drifting while you are in the nightmare (like intrusive thoughts). You are halfway aware that youre in a nightmare so you try to think of other things to make the dream less scary, things that veer away from the original trajectory the nightmare was going (the music switching between random samples). But in the back of your mind you know your brain might drift back to scary thoughts that will be reflected in your nightmare, so there’s this looming fear that torments you despite how much you try to stop thinking about it (the faint reversed drum beat in the background, the guitar between each change in sound). Then the scary sounds come back and you knew it was coming (loud broken voices). Also, the changes in music feel like I’m changing settings, it feels kind of immersive.
Damn I can see that a lot, I used to shuffle in my mind anything better that could be happening in the dream. I’d come up with the most random things
If we believe the main theory about the meaning of this song, then it kinda sounds like the main character is trying to distract himself from the agony during the therapy.
omg you are so right
the other day i fell asleep while extremely tired, but when i tried waking back up i couldnt, and it was lowkey kind of terrifying to be trapped in my own mind and body in a dream and just trying to get back to reality
(i often lucid dream so knowing i was in a dream wasnt too uncommon, especially when falling asleep so quick, but its usually never all that difficult to wake up from one willingly, and my panicked state of mind made the dream more and more uncomfortable to be in, giving it a feeling of wrongness)

okay I have severe ADHD and this song is horrifyingly relatable, especially in the second to last verse of the song. I can’t tell if I'm not me, and my thoughts are like little holes I put myself into. they're in word salad and randomly change, scattering in my brain. I have no idea what is happening inside my mind anymore.
I love how the spotify version of this song plays the entire song backwards first (if your like me skip to 2:50 thats where the song starts forward on ol spotty)
Toasty Blankets I think all music platforms have the backwards version play first, cuz I listen to it on google music (yeah, I’m pretty lame 😒)
@@thatsdree1350 I prefer Google Music to Spotify. Much nicer layout.
thats because the beginning reversed is in the original
It’s like that in the original this is it without the reverse
Cthulhu no, this is the reversed part played backwards so it’s intelligible. this one is different than the other, that’s why it’s longer.
This song is my sleep paralysis demon.

I literally couldn’t control my left foot while listening to this because it felt like it was buckled down to my bed, heavy, painful, hilarious, uncomfortable. I don’t even know how that works.

Technically this is the original -🤓
Idk if anyone noticed but at the line

There is a slight whistleing in the backround. I thought i would share this knowledge because it’s actually quite pretty.:)
look up labyrinth
@@theheartpt5 oh ive heard it before i mean i love thus album lol
I like the way they add different musical effects at this moment...
I like the base better in this version than the version with no reverse at all, and I especially like at 1:04 when most of the instrumental stops and it's just the vocals, it sounds so cool

One time I suggested to do this for a choir concert and we did the song- 😭😭 it was for my spring concert.
Holy heck
This is a great tune to test your headphones on.
Not to mention one of the most disturbing songs I've ever heard, but it's part of a highly recommended album
Don’t mind me! I’ve been hyper fixated on this one song for the past 48-72 hours so I’m just here to over analyze the placements of the distortions:
I believe the reverse section isn’t distorted because he is trying to bring himself back to the beginning, and also because we wouldn’t be able to pick up on it. I also think his first verse is severely distorted because it was the last thing he remembers saying before going insane. There’s minor amounts of distortion before the “all mine towers crumble down”. I think it’s because it’s the true start of his trauma in his mind and his mind is trying to block it. The longest distortion section is before “nuns commence incanting” because that’s where his trauma actually is and where his mind actually started breaking so it’s the hardest to remember. I also think the repeated musical phrases are him trying to force his broken mind to work and let him remember. I think there is also a second distortion section before “electrifying” because it’s another major part of his trauma and his mind successfully goes off-track and the sudden return to the music is him forcing his mind back on track. Second to last, I believe the distortions end right before “see how the serfs” because that’s where his mind is fully broken and thus is what’s clearest to his insane mind. Finally, the music quiets down and the vocals get louder on the outro, verses for most of the song the instrumental was extremely loud and was sometimes hard to hear the vocals because of it, because that’s him being fully broken and yet the clearest to him because it is him right now. Anyways, that's just my thoughts, if you have any additions or your own thoughts I’d love to hear them! (Also sorry if the structure of this is awful, it started off as bullet points that I wrote down while listening to the song and decided to structure into sentences for a coherent comment, which is ironic considering the song)
Just realized I forgot one: I think there’s a distortion before ‘spiraling down’ because it’s where his actual insanity starts and he speaks again
The distorted adds more of an insane feeling to the song and i love it
The distorted "so" gets me every time
Hawaii Part II is such a good album, man.
vouch ^^
Agreed
Dont forget the
Might be a fact: Some of the distorted noises is from the reverse of the mind electric!
Im confused
the other way round
If this is the forward part of the song the reversed part is undistorted.
@@yyosh4762 no there’s a normal version, a backwards version, and this one (distorted forwards)
I dont understand why but this song helped me a lot. Everytime i was feeling bad in anyway, i listened to this song and drew things related to it, it helped me to learn how to draw better and made me feel better, it legitimately saved me from giving up several times and i just dont understand why but i guess its some kind of comfort song for me now
I totally get that. There's a strange sense of calm I get after listening to it and I absolutely love it
Me too the song is weirdly calming and I love the theme of it. I wish I knew more songs about the mentally insane, I like that topic.
This song gave me a fucking panic attack lmao
why are people still replying to this 2021 comment 💀💀💀
@@looooo24The Mind Electric is Timeless. At least for now. Also, hi Karkat.
The distorted version is wayyy better, it gives off analog horror and I fucking love it! It gives more emotion and personality. I can see so many different situations in my mind when I listen to this version. I love this!!
I have been hearing this song for a whole day, i think im addicted
Im hearing the "axon dendrites" even without headphones.
The synth in *_the good part_* makes this one better than the undistorted in my opinion. The distortions add personality, but being able to comprehend the music is also important, but that synth is just awesome.
as someone who has schizophrenia and psychosis, this brings me immense amounts of comfort and relaxation.
I had no idea that this song was even reversed or distorted in the first place so I feel like I'm rapidly and horrifically loosing my memories
I usually don't find these types of songs good especially the distorted ones but oh boy, this is so good.
It's rewind time
Almost 1M views!
We did it, 1 million
I heard the regular version first, and even that one felt a little scary for me back then. So you can probably guess the absolute shock I felt hearing this for the first time!
The distortion just makes it better
Makes the story more interesting
2:16 for some reason I always picture the devil talking here as they (Simon I guess?) reach the afterlife, joking grimly about how we live just to slowly work ourselves to death, chuckling to himself as some imp or something (the higher pitched voice) approaches and starts taunting them as well, mimicking their pleas back to them ("Someone help me understand what's going on inside my mind") in an almost mocking way. The whole thing feels like a massive final "fuck you" to our poor narrator, especially in response to "I was just a boy you see, I plead of thee have sympathy for me".
yea exactly like no sympathy for you simon 🙂
You mean the best version? The shortest edit of it (close to three minutes) feels a bit boring now and the “thirst for trouble” bit feels so much more real when it’s more intense than the short one.
Got to love how this one sort of gives a perspective of his memories playing through his head while he’s getting the ever-loving shit shocked out of him, especially with the distorted vocal swell and short choppy rewind sound mimicking what I’d imagine getting shocked would sound like.
I've been trying to find this version of the song for YEARS
Wow-
it’s literally just on spotify lol, along with every major steaming platform
That bridge is straight FIRE
I love this version so much.
Queenie Of The Galaxy same it gives so much more to the story of the song.
This version definitely triggered my fight or flight responses when I first heard it. Just a sensory nightmare.
THE "THIRST FOR TROUBLE" PART OMGOMGOMG IM LOSING MY SHIT THATS MY FAVORITE PART
1:25 How come i can hear trainer blues theme here in the choir
Edit:whoever liked this plz tell me im not crazy
There's a lot of samples in here such as Ganon's laugh from Zelda, so you never know-?
My mom says I'm ugly nah
1:21 Is like a never-ending elevator and 1:32 makes my brain go brrrrrr
Even thought this song isn’t about schizophrenia or dementia at all it still gives the vibes. It gives schizophrenia because of the whispers and glitching and the line “Doctor, I can’t tell if I’m not me.” And the trial at the beginning of the song because of the murder.
But it also gives dementia because there are small moments of calming tunes that are like memories but disappear just in a few seconds. And a lot of thoughts scattered along with the glitches. And for this, the line “Doctor, I can’t tell if I’m not me.” Could mean you’re forgetting yourself. And the dementia causes you to kill someone because you don’t know them or you’re think their someone else.
Oh my goodness! The 8-bit sound during the bridge is the ending instrumental to Labyrinth! There's also a part in the music video version during the bridge where you can hear whistling to the chorus of Labyrinth
I WAS LOOKING TO SEE WHO ELSE NOTICED!! I was so excited when I realized I found a little secret!
Man I love all the references to the other songs the mind electric has, it made it so much better when I started listening to the whole album
the fact that the lyrics briefly stop at 1:46 and suddenly pick back up at 1:48, like it's getting harder for the singer to focus on the lyrics
1:55 - 1:59 too, fuck this song is so good

Man, I haven't listened to this song in months. The random nostalgia is weird.
*someone help me understand what’s going on inside my mind, doctor i can’t tell if it’s not me*
this version is my cup of tea
The laugh at 2:32 was sampled from the laugh Ganon does when you die in Legend of Zelda 2. The same laugh was also used for Soda Popinski's laugh in "Mike Tyson's Punch Out!!". The laugh for Popinski is just sped up so that the drunken Russian boxer doesn't laugh like a evil gigantic pig monster who committed many crimes against humanity and gets beat by a mute Peter Pan.
I love how the piano drowns out the vocals in the chorus, It just makes it feel so powerful
*_WHAT IS THAT MELODY?_*
This is the best part, it describes perfectly the experience Simon was living. The whole album feels like a movie, but this one is my favourite. Thank you Joe, Bora, Ross and everybody that participated in Hawaii Part II and also Tally Hall for creating this marvelous masterpiece 🌴🌈
Am I the only one who had no idea this wasn't the original? This is the version that's on the album on Spotify so it's the only one I've ever listened to lol
I JUST REALIZED SOMETHING

At roughly 2:35 when they say ‘see how the brain plays aroouuuuunnnnd” in the background you hear someone hum the tune of labyrinth (seeeee how i cirrrrclleeeee)
I am literally listening to every version of this song i can find it’s so awesome
Whatever this style of music is, songs like this make me very happy :3
Ive only ever heard the distorted version so i was confused at first LOL
I dream to one day make music this good.
This version feels ALOT more complete than the non distorted version.
Especially the "surfs" part.
i wish i could listen to this for the first time again
I didn't know they had this version without the backwards part- but hey that's good aswell-

The "all mine towers..." part is definitely the best part of the song
the climaxes are all my favorites, especially before the bridge but everyone usually likes the part afterwards

The normal version is a great song, but this version just hits different.
In my interpratation
"reversed part of that song" is vewing a point of us people, media who watch that story.
Thats why diasturbed parts of that song had beed replacd with tv news reporters talking about this around the world
i just noticed a little something at 2:59 its so distorted that you can hear the pixel music part from the labirynth
2:34 also has someone whistling Labyrinth's main motive

Funny thing but for almost a year I listened to the tame version and then I listened to the full song on Spotify (with the reversed bit and everything) and was completely caught off guard because I had no idea there was a chaotic/distorted version
1:03 Thirst for trouble sounds so good!! Just me?
