Just hold control and click on the thumbnail of the layer in the layer panel

What version of Photoshop is this? I have the latest and the method here doesn't match. For one thing, there's no "Select pixels" when you right click the text layer.

You have to make sure to click the square box to the left on the layer, and not the text area.
