The ULTIMATE Budget Gaming System!

  • We love games and we love to play them. But in 2018 we can surly have ONE gaming system that can play everything? Dedicated to gaming and completely controllable with a controller? ONE system that can play old, new, PC games, Console games... EVERYTHING! ....ALL FOR LESS THAN £300!?!?! ($380 USD)
    So I am making it my mission to build one and this is the first one out the gates. The video is 50 mins long... terrilong I know, but I have allot of information and games to get through. I asked if you wanted it split or full and you said full... here you go!
    *TIMESTAMPS*
    03:33 - SOFTWARE
    06:46 - PC GAMES BENCHMARKS
    17:41 - EMULATED GAME BENCHMARKS
    33:29 - THE PARTS USED AND WHY
    44:52 - BREAKDOWN AND TOTALS
    More videos and builds like this on the way... Some cheaper, some more expensive. It's all thanks to you guys helping and making this channel what it is that gives me the chance to do this kind of thing. Thank you to everyone who has helped and those of you who even donated parts to make some of these happen and of course those of you who donated to my Patreon... I hope I did you all justice and you will all have the credits for all your help.
    Please be aware that in the capturing of these videos the framerate and bitrate has been changed for them to show properly in this video. This means that the footage is not identical in quality to the original gameplay. I am not saying I have improved them, if anything they may seem choppy due to variable 30-60fps games being handbraked to a static 60 to be usable in my software and UA-cam.
    You will need Windows 10. I am not including this in the budget as worst case scenario you can use fully fledged Windows 10, even Pro if you wanted to for free as long as you dont mind the WaterMark. But, in 2018, I am sure you can source a full version of Windows for free if you look hard enough.

    This video in regards to Emulation is made to encourage you to play your BACKUPS. In other words, THE GAMES WHICH YOU ALREADY OWN!. Please do not emulate any games which you do not already have on any systems which you do not own. Unless of course they are abandon/free-ware due to license or age.
    Emulation for me is not about playing games I do not own. It is about playing games on another platform. In fact on my PC at 4k internal resolution 60fps with one controller... not having 200+ consoles set up with 600+ controllers tangled up!
    ESPECIALLY, do not sell anything to do with this scene or be stupid enough to buy anything from this scene. Support Developers (especially SEGA) and pay for what you play!

On this one I just tried to get the more demanding ones. But ... its your content just as much as mine so you decide :D Also next Build already underway. Next video like this I will take you through actually BUILDING it and installing the software you need to make the magic happen!
    Thanks for all your support, you are all AMAZING!

      hey austin! love the video, but maybe a suggestion for next time, put the specs in first? benchmarks don't really mean anything to me unless i know what the hardware it's running on is. Just my thoughts though, obviously do whatever you think is good.

    Great video. I essentially built my pc from a mix of new and used parts a few years ago. I spent about £400 in total for an I7 3770, 16gb ram, 1050TI GPU. I bought the computer off of an auction site for £150 and upgraded the ram, gpu and a cheeky ssd. Thanks for this information it was great seeing the games running and their performance with the setup. It would be interesting to see results from an upgraded version of this setup. Cheers, jon

      All he does is ramble on throughout the entire video trying to explain every single part and it's benefits and cons based on the time of recording considerations. Like just give the parts and specs in the description and stop trying to get views and likes. This alone loses a like from me.
      CPU= i5 2500
      RAM = 8GB
      MOB = Doesn't really matter, it's really just a conduit (think of a house with no furniture).
      GPU = 1050 NVidia GPU
      PSU = really doesn't matter either, just get a recommended for your CPU/MOB
      Case = Really? cmon
      Just look up cpu and ram on ebay for a used pc, much better than trying to source parts. Many non-technical folks selling cheap pc's and some also selling corporate discards.

    For the most bang for your buck, I recommend the 2TB Seagate Firecuda. Plenty of space for overhead and the Hybrid Drive interface will give you the read/write speed you need to run modern PC games with no issues. The plus size is if you look around you can get one for $100US or less.

    Can only ask for more, that's exactly the kind of build I'm into: a build that can handle modern games and "modern" emulation in the same time without going above the price tag of the most modern gaming consoles! Its around 450£ for an Xbox One X, 360£ for a PS4 Pro or 300$ for a Switch so to reach the average console budget you still have an extra 70£ to make the best out of it! Of course there's the controller and peripherals but still... Can't wait to see the results with the other CPU you mention in the video (and kinda looking forward to know what CPU is this to make my own build!) Keep up the good work!

    About the rig, I have a similar one: A 3570K. And I did put a 1080 there. Only now in 2018 I'm steping on games that actually can't use 1080 at max because of the CPU. But if you think a little, 1080 is a 4k30 type of card. So the 3570k actually IS OK. And maybe it is OK to put a more powerfull card and it'll be still OK.

    • @SimplyAustins
      @SimplyAustins  6 років тому +1

      yeah mate, its very much game dependant. Like I said in video, its notmally only a 1-5% loss. But its also very much game related. Games that require CPU grunt effected more

    • @MrReddragongamingHD
      @MrReddragongamingHD 6 років тому

      Quite a few games should run at 60 FPS at 4K on that card (albeit possibly not on Ultra settings). I had a similar i5 3470 and that even bottlenecked my old 7950 in games like BF1 and just made the system feel sluggish. Much happier with a Ryzen 5 1600. Assuming you have a Z77 board, you should try and nab an i7 3770K if possible.

    • @tamodolo
      @tamodolo 6 років тому

      3770k don't give much increase compared with 3570k. This family have problematic HT tech. 3770k is only 10% faster than the 3570k. I recently overclocked to 4.4gHz and this made my PC run more games better. This system already have 5 years and I'm doing some extra hours with it until PC tech stabilizes again.
      CPU tech still vertiginously increasing and we are in the dawn of GDDR6, PCIe 4.0 and 5.0 and some other minor things. 8 real core CPU may be transient to a higher core count that may arrive as soon as next year.
      It's a bad time to buy a new computer. We're still getting old tech with new CPUs.

    • @XxLukexX
      @XxLukexX 6 років тому +1

      Otávio Módolo Can't agree - intel has achieved the strongest single core possible now, if you compare your i5 to a modern one you'll find it's at least 50% single core ahead and mulicore has improved. Cpus are not gpus - performance can't be pushed as fast as gpus.

    • @tamodolo
      @tamodolo 6 років тому

      There is no such thing as impossible. Single thread performance didn't go that high. According to Passmark, my 3570k scores around 2000 points. The 8600k scores around 2500. That's just 25% performance increase. The clock speed increase is about 13% showning that was very minor IPC increase since 3th gen.
      Now, if you take a close look on what happened to ryzen in comparison with FX them we get this: FX8370 - 1500, Ryzen 1800x - 1950. 30% increase. Ryzen 2700x - 2200. 46% (!!!!) increase. I expect that Zen2 will have 10% more increase in single core performance making around 2500 points and marking 65% increase over FX series. And in less time than Intel. I think this proves my point.
      Conclusion: Intel is selling the very same proc since sand bridge (as there is no diference between a 2500k and a 3570k aside from PCIe 3 support). There were almost no improvements since 2012.
      Forgot to mention: AMD actually is much cheaper.

      Salman Khan
      It's his videos I use as a guide. Tried to install it again earlier as this is a new gaming rig I've built so obviously need a fresh install. Didn't realise the program you use for downloading games is no longer supported so had to download the work-around which flagged up with a bunch of malware. Managed to get zelda plus it's update and DLC, selected graphics packs blah blah blah, try to start the game, shit tells me to update wii U before I can play zelda, change some numbers in notepad, that works, game starts then crashes on the bright light screen where the pointy eared bitch is telling link to wake up.... Cancer.
      I just give the fuck up with the emulator, man. I'll reinstall when they have their shit together and make it as simple as install and play instead of this fucking Da Vinci code bullshit 👎🏼

I did purchase a SFF pre-built system with an i5 3470 and 8GB of RAM for around $100 and I stuck a good old GT 1030 in there and it's worked great! I'm eventually going to upgrade it to a GTX 1050 TI which I hope will make it even more awesome. Honestly, I think it's more cost effective to go the pre-built system route but you did a wonderful job buying all of these parts and building it yourself. Can't wait for more videos on this

      Yeah, those GPUs ain't built for Res. I been testing a 960 out. They are cheap and faster than the 1050... But need more power and cooling

    • @skipchip8315
      @skipchip8315 6 років тому +4

      That’s my main problem with those pre-builds. The limited space eliminates the possibility of using a lot of GPUs. And even if space weren’t a problem, the cooling and PSUs are usually so bad that you can’t put a super powerful GPU in there without risking one thing or another

      SkipChip 1050 or 1050ti's are great for those reasons, low power consumption & small in size, as long as there is 1 pci slot available.👍

    Okay, here's a challenge for you. There is a way to connect a PSVR headset to a PC and use it for PC VR games. Let's say our budget gamer takes that approach for VR so as to minimize costs. (Yeah, I'm looking for a used PSVR headset to do just that.) How would your budget gaming rig handle the added requirements for a VR game? Taking things a bit further and throwing emulation into the mix, Dolphin is able to set up full VR for GameCube and Wii games that obviously didn't have it to begin with. Metroid Prime 3 is known for working exceptionally well in VR, and the game's HUD even helps to prevent VR motion sickness.
    So to recap, how does your budget gaming PC handle the Dolphin emulator, running Metroid Prime 3 (preferably at 1080p and at least 60 FPS to minimize motion sickness, but 90 FPS would be preferred for VR), on a VR headset?
    Also, there is a driver out there that lets you convert non-VR games into VR as well. On the PC side of things, how about a racing game and an FPS game to test that out? To make it a bit easier, I believe one of the most popular converted games is Bioshock, which is fairly old and should be incredibly easy to run without the additional driver. It's mainly popular in VR obviously because of the setting and atmosphere.

      @@kryptkeeper457 According to Google:
      Hardware on the GameCube was actually quite a bit more powerful than the PS2, and it came in a smaller form factor (at least before the slim). The PS2 had some great looking games because it was popular; over its long lifespan, a huge amount of game developers were able to learn how to fully utilize its hardware. This wasn't the case for the GC, which is why many people think that it was nothing special technologically.
      The original Xbox was the fastest of the three, but it was a big boi.

    Three things Austin.
    Firstly.. congrats on making this budget system that can even make PS3 games work..
    2ndly.. this is such a breathe of fresh air and I may even consider building a table console.. to hold my coffee.
    3rdly.. if you can do this for a budget system.. I am scared to see what you can do with a full "no limits" system.. even glycol cooling to make it the most smoothest and quietest system..
    My main question.
    How many controllers can be programmed for this programme..
    I mean.. can I configure a set of controllers from each system , bar say PlayStation..

    I built a gaming PC several years ago(around 2013 or '14), and although it may have begun to lag behind in modern titles I haven't found an emulated title it can't play. I'm even able to bump the resolution on Dolphin and pcsx2 to 3x or 4x the native, and have a bit of a better graphical experience than the original system. My point behind this is that I use an ASUS R9 290 and have no issues with OpenGL.

    Unless you buy these parts on ebay used your prices for the US are pretty far off. The I5 2500 New in the US is around $129.99 Used Aliexpress has one for $56 and Ebay $44.44 The Gtx 1050 low profile is around $124 New and $52-70 on ebay. So I guess if your brave enough to buy used ebay stuff you can get pretty close to your price even beat a few since I didn't account for the currency conversion :P Great video tho, I have some old I5's laying around from some alienware pc's I might try this or a simular build. The games on the site are still available. The database of files haven't been taken down, but merely has had code set in place to make it appear unavailable. Installing a chrome extension such as 'Tamper Monkey' that includes a 'download workaround' feature will add an extra option in the Direct Download section of the ROM's page called 'Download using the workaround script'. Clicking on this, will instantaneously download the games Zip file onto your pc. Happy emulating :)
    (side note: as for nintendo games, simply searching and then 'emuparadise' into google, will find the page that was taken down from the games site.

    NEVER skimp on the PSU. Always get a 80+ Bronze or better rated PSU, Although I'd personally recommend getting 80+ Gold.
    This is not for power efficiency reasons, it's to protect your system.
    Power supplies fail, it's a fact of life. The problem comes in when your power supply actually fails. It starts providing unsteady power, shooting power spikes through the system, or worse. I've actually seen a case where a failing power supply over-volted the CPU so strongly on a power spike that the CPU melted (it did not have a cheap heatsink either).
    Cheap power supplies typically only have a lifespan of 2-3 years, if you're lucky, before they fail; and when they fail, they fail in ways that can destroy other parts of your computer, more often than not having power spikes and over-voltages.
    A 80+ Bronze or better power supply will last at least 5 years before failing, an 80+ Gold can last 10-15 years if you're lucky; and not only do they have more safety measures built in to protect the rest of your system, they also tend to fail in ways that cause under-voltages, rather than over-voltages. And an under-volt isn't going to damage any of your components.... Just cause some semi-frequent really weird and near impossible to track down or reproduce random glitches (glitches like that are almost always caused by either failing power supplies or faulty RAM).

    To those that browse looking for specs - I got some recommendations that might just save some money with the same effects.
    As CPU, look for a i5-2500K with a suiting mobo, as you can achieve decent overclocks and good performance for low end gaming. Youre bound to use ddr3 ram that way, but there's worse. 8Gb used shouldnt be above 20€. Get some PSU for 20-30€ used, aswell as storage (SSD preferably). The case doesnt matter too much, id say try to make it as small as possible of a build as possible in order to make it more console-ish. The graphics card: I wouldnt go for a 1050. You can get gtx 770's that outperform the 1050 by a decent margin for way less money. You could intead also look for amd alternatives (r9 280x etc.), yet im not 100% sure which cards perform better with emulators.
    All of this refers to used hardware, as that would be the cheapest, and most environmentally friendly option for an emulation rig.

    I think this is actually a pretty sensible, affordable build. The only issue that puzzles me is if the CPU and the board do still get BIOS support for Meltdown and Specter. If they do, there should be nothing to stop people to try a hand on it, but if they don't then a build based on newer parts should be better (mainly CPU and board), even though it's bound to be more expensive.

    As of today, everything but the motherboard is available on Amazon. As an alternative, I'm going to recommend the Intel DH77DF as it has the most similar specs. Sadly, it'll cost you quite a bit more, even used, as it runs around $125 (£95). Considering that both the CPU and the mobo are both Intel products now, it might run slightly better.

      Check out ETA PRIME's channel. He did such testing. And the newer/younger the Emulators get, the more GPU power you need. APUs/iGPUs simply don't cut it anymore.
      Even on "older" Emulators like PCSX2 (PS2), you can't run demanding games like Shadow of the Colossus. Without massive slow downs, if you lack a dedicated GPU. Even strong Overclocking cannot bridge this gap.
      Sadly its all AMDs fault. Not only are their APUs garbage aka vastly underpowered, when it comes to graphics performance. As mentioned in this video, AMDs OpenGL implementation is crap. Never use AMD GPUs for emulation.
      Think about it for a moment, if Emulation would work properly with AMD GPUs. All you'll need, is an APU. Both gamers and AMD could only profit from this. An awesome Emulation machine, at the size of a NUC. Hope dies last they say...

    At the 1060 point, just get a GTX 980 Ti. It's older and may appear to be clocked slower, but don't be fooled: it has more core components that help out! If you play your cards right, you can even get a GTX 980 Ti for near the price of a 1050, and most 980 TIs can be overclocked slightly to give even more power. That and the 980s typically had more GPU ram, so it renders the whole DDR3 thing inert.

      Good for you Versatile! I still have an Xbox 360 that I use to play older titles. I picked it up for $19.

      Simply Austin lol every halo game is Xbox one currently. No need to wait for a PC version. Not many of the Xbox catalog isn't available either considering emulation for og Xbox and 360 aren't quite there. Even ps3 isn't there yet.

    I made the very same thing but with Emulation Station on windows, it works like a charm with all the emulators and the windows games as well! But... well, I spent somenthing more than 380 USD to handle PS3 emu and to play Rachet and Clank in a clean and smoot way! =) and... crysis! XD

    I want a system which can play everything from old consoles like SNES,N64 up to ps2.. :/

    • @SimplyAustins
      @SimplyAustins  6 років тому +1

      Basic pc is best option mate. I got an i3 build on way. That's half this price and everything up to PS2 and 3DS

    • @hardlimiter4744
      @hardlimiter4744 6 років тому

      Is there a emulator or something for PS2? Because PCSX2 is unplayable with NFS Underground 2 or other games like that with their "speed" in game. its all blurred... because the emulators are weaker than a original console.

    • @SimplyAustins
      @SimplyAustins  6 років тому +1

      There is play! But it's quite early for that one. Have you checked the compatible list? Sometimes games need a certain setting

    • @Armataan
      @Armataan 6 років тому

      Most ps2 games run at 99% compatibility in 4k@60 w/ 16x aa on modern hardware in pcs2x. Running native settings should work fine on any i3. But a few games have compatability issues.

    • @hardlimiter4744
      @hardlimiter4744 6 років тому

      Let me bet, there isn´t a way to play all ps2 games without changing profile/settings all the time? If need game X other settings like game Y.

    Original Xbox emulation is possible?

    • @nickshaman420
      @nickshaman420 5 років тому

      Nope, the problem with emulating the og xbox isn't the lack of power in pcs these days. It has to do with how the sound is emulated. Microsoft used a very customized sound card in the original xbox, it's so complicated to emulate It still hasn't been done. You can look ou into it a bit more but I believe sound is main reason still no og xbox emulator.
