I have a rat colony deck with the same General and piper of the swarm has helped me win a game against a highly tuned Prosh deck that is known throughout Brooklyn. The deck started as a janky meme deck and has evolved into better than decent with me looking to make it into a 7.

Muldrotha commander Relentless rats deck is one of my favorites. Ramp tutors counters you can have m all.
I did muldrotha as well and that one green black enchantment was a house. But I still feel that grenzo is the best commander for the rats. I really miss that deck...

Phenax Rats is my deck. It self mills then brings them all back for profit. Mogis's Marauders was a POWER HOUSE ALL STAR in that deck. 10-15 rats + MM in the graveyard all hitting the field at the same time? GG.

Thank you guys so much for building this deck ! I’m not sure if you are familiar with the book series called “Redwall” by Brian Jacques , but there is a vile Black Sea rat named Cluny the Scourge in it, he strikes fear in every rat and conquered and killed leaders of other animal “tribes”. Favorite book series growing up and he was my favorite villain so I had to start building this. Only thing is I swapped relentless rats for rat colony . 1 drop fat glass cannon rats 🐀

What is the numerical power level of this deck?
I think it is a question that should be answered for all your commander tuneups. I think that sort of info would help the community.
I kinda like the idea of this using our scale this is a 7
an interesting argument for extraplanar lens vs Jet medallion is that you technically end up tapping less total lands for mana with extra planar than jet. for example if you wanted to play 5 relentless rats with extraplanar lens you need 15 mana which equates to 8 basic lands, to play the same amount with jet medallion you need 10 mana which equates to 10 lands.
i am curious if you guys considered that at all. especially since you are running both coffers and stronghold in the lands and
69% of your lands have the same name.

This was a great deck tech happy to see love for rats! I have a rat colony centered marrow gnawer deck def going to take some of these tips into my edits :D
Love the show but I think since you guys cut me sweet Living Death, citing the lack of self mill but then added Syr Konrad because he can mill people the deck would be better off with Ayara, first of Lochthwain so you can sac creatures for draw and punish all your opponents for the number of rats you control with each Marrow Gnawer activation. Also gains you life and doesn’t require sacrificing your board state since she cares about black creatures entering the battlefield. Also super easy to cast in monoblack, cheaper than Konrad and one more pip for Nykthos!
Great show as always boys but my girl Ayara far spicier in this deck than Konrad
completely agree, Ayara gets the payoff on the tokens' ETB so much more easily than syr konrad does since theres only really one sac outlet in the deck, and you dont really want to get rid of your rats, you want to be able to get more the next turn
I actually agree with Beezy at the end. The difference between tick-tock and entertainment is that entertainment you actively choose to engage with, it enriches your time and experience because you know that you chose to spend your time doing that. The way tick-tock is designed, you aren't meant to choose, you're meant to "skim". Just watching video after video, hoping you find a good one that enriches your time, that you can feel like you chose to engage with, but the last 10 that you didn't? That's where the black hole effect comes from, especially since every video is a minute long, each individual video that's a waste of time doesn't feel as bad "because it was only a minute" as you repeat the same process 30 times.
Is there any reason at all to run Relentless Rats over Rat Colony? I've played both versions of the deck and Rat Colony dumps rats onto the field way faster. Them having 1 toughness nearly never matters and the devotion only matters if you are playing Gary.
Yeah so often when I play rats I'll have like 4 Colonies out, tap Marrow-Gnawer, unap him, tap him again, swing for 80 damage. it's crazy. Plus the one toughness hardly matters because of them getting Fear
I had a friend with a rat colony deck, and the 1 toughness was the decks biggest weakness. Very susceptible to any pinging or low to the ground board wipes. Magmaquake is probably in the top 5 of mono red board wipes with its instant speed, Toxic deluge is the bost wipe in black, and any pinging effects can just ruin your day. Walking ballista, mayhem devil, goblin sharpshooter in particular. Not to mention all the regular board wipes that would hose both rat colony and relentless rats.
IMO when the decks biggest weakness is board wipes, you dont want to increase the amount of board wipes that will ruin your day. This is just my thoughts of course, you trade a bit of speed for a lot of survivability.

I prefer the colony as well so you can skullclamp them for cards too

Same idea and it’s “if you don’t stop me, and don’t run black or artifacts, you probably lose.”
Now every decks like that by this one gets lethal pretty fast

Minor oversight guys, the deck can't run 'Crypt Ghast' since it's effect text has dual white / black mana symbols. Marrow-Gnawer is mono-black.
That is reminder text, crypt ghast can be played in this deck.

For Altar of Dementia just a note that as you sac rats the remaining rats will get weaker. It's still good but you'll get diminishing returns

My rat deck was Relentless Rats but I found that Rat Colony is WAY better with Marrow Gnawer

I decided to build a relentless rats deck by myself recently and I have 90% of the same cards that you suggested before watching this video. I have to make it more budget tho
I noticed that you didn't put in Soul Foundry, and while I know it's not a very strong card, it does technically give you the ability to get an infinite amount of Relentless Rats instead of being capped at 28. Which is more than enough as is, but like, who doesn't want theoretically infinite rats instead?

@@mrj3711 Colonies get plus one for EVERY rat on the field. Including the tokens Marrow Gnawer makes. Relentless rats get +1/+1 for just each other relentless rat
Thornbite staff + ghoulcaller gisa
This is such good synergy. I have Thornbite Staff in my Syr Konrad deck, and use it to untap Gisa, Ayara, Vermin Gorger, Soldevi Adnate, Magus of the Coffers, Whisper Blood Liturgist, Priest of Forgotten Gods, and Perpetual Timepiece. All of those can work in this deck.

Does the ripple effect count as casting those creatures. If so wouldn't that lead to possibly 20 to 30 damage from casting all the Relentless Rats while Bontu's Monument is out?
Youre correct! I’ve won many games because of that combo. Another one is thornbite, ayura, and marrow Gnawer. It’s basically the same combo just stronger
How strong do you find the rats without these combos? I'm building a relentless rats deck themed around plague. I've added multiple tutors but these are driving my cost up and I'm unsure if I can pull it off without those.

What the heck I literally just finished making my ayara rat deck yesterday
It's pretty much the same as my marrow-gnawer deck. But! I would recomend Ayara first of lochtwain. It has over performed for me. It's card draw and drain efects, witch triggers on the tokens as well! AND as another flavour win with ayara i put in Plague of Vermin. Also just for another flavour reason I put in vermin gorger, witch can also kill the table with the thornbite staff
Ps. In AFR there came a swamp that the flavour text speeks about the rats in the sewers! Had to get them obviously.
I also rock Ayara in my Rat Deck. With Thornbite Staff. Amazing combo.

So.. if you name the creature type changlings does it only effect changlings, or does it by word of law effect all creature types? Lawyers arise!

Changling isn't a creature type, it's an ability that grants all creature types. Typically, changlings are "shapeshifters", but because of changling, they are all creature types at all times in all zones.

Why swap dem tutor for exped map when you can tutor the lands with dem tutor anyway?
they explained in the video that they dont want the same-y play patter of tutor for combo piece -> win, so they cut demonic form a more narrow tutor.

I've been building a rat deck for years now, but I struggle with should I do Relentless or Colony?
as another person said in the comments, colony works so well with skullclamp. plus, colony gets pumped for each other rat whereas relentless only gets pumped for other relentless in play. and then if you have any aristocrats payoffs as a backup wincon? i mean come on, just awesome

I like keeping the demonic tutor in for consistency and to get rats on some higher level games. If I’m on lower level tables I just tutor up lesser impactful cards.

It’s kinda a preference thing. Both rats work well and have there counters. I like using relentless rats because there less vulnerable to ping damage and damage type boardwipes
Not gonna lie I want the new all will be one rat lord the rat avatar the rat that gives fear the rat that gives +x/+x when he attacks x is the number of rats you control three to 4 black board wipes some card draw some creature destruction and the rest just relentless rats
My brother listens to Rats by Ghost at the start of every game when he plays his rats deck. I dislike it greatly.
