- THIS BARRISTER BOOKCASE CAME INTO THE SHOP RECENTLY. IT WAS FALLING APART AND JUST NEEDED A LITTLE TLC TO BRING IT BACK !!

It is a work of love. You must love restoring old furniture because I can see the attention to details right down to preserving the original labels. Fabulous!
Another exceptional piece... but it shows in the details... the finish and craftsmanship is what all of us amateurs strive for. I left pre-vet studies and got married. My uncle asked me to apprentice with him. He was a master cabinet maker and sign painter. At 21 I was not smart enough to know what he was offering to me... his specialty was restoration, refinishing and marriages of antique furniture. What you do is what I passed up.

I have one from 1898 it is a little worse shape but has its original glass, finish and metal knobs and metal corner edgers. I want to restore it myself. Thanks very much for this demo!

the speaking part is not my strong suit, especially trying to narrate while working , I have found that in some cases voicing over is a lot easier and can do as many takes as needed .

I have a size C11 grade 299 bookcase from Globe Wernicke in amazing condition. In Miami, Florida bought from an estate sale a few weeks back.

Hey Ross, that was a piece worth saving. Came out beautiful. Lots of " fussy " work , but worth it. Great job . I think you'll get a kick out of the craftsmanship . If you get a chance look at a couple of UA-cam videos about the Winchester museum in San Jose. Amazing.

I was especially interested to see how you dealt with that veneer damage. I like the foil tape idea. Never thought of that, nothing will stick to it for sure. You may also be able to do that with wax paper.

If your work includes more labels, you may want to look at book restoration supplies. There are pH neutral EVA and PVA glues made for restoring book pages. Not expensive and might be worth having as one of your supplies along with a few sheets of mulberry or rice paper for backing.

Just a suggestion: As an alternative to using craft-paper for the label backing, consider using Japanese tissue paper (mulberry paper). It is very fine and translucent, but very strong. It is used by bookbinders and archivists to repair documents. I got some at Blick's art supply store.

Your knowledge and patience is phenomenal; thank you so much for this video. We recently were handed down an early 1900s Lundstrom folding sectional barrister case that has been in the family since its original purchase. The bookcase is in relative good condition for its age. The slides are good, but the brass hooks on the doors are not in good shape. As a matter of fact, somewhere along the way someone replaced one of them with a cup hook, and that cup hook is now broken. Is there any way of replacing these hooks with a similar type of hook? We are at a loss. Thank you for any help.
Nice tutorial, thanks. Why not use the traditional hyde glue that was likely used originally rather than modern yellow glue? Should a glass payne break the hyde glue will come apart much easier for possible future repairs.

Wow Ross....nice job on bringing that beauty “back to the land of the living”! I “discovered” you after coming into ownership of a Gunn 5-tier barrister and researching the internet. I always wanted one of these bookcases finally finding one at one of my favorite second-hand haunts in western Massachusetts. Surprisingly, mine had almost same exact issues on veneer top.....cracking veneer under a water ring and ink stain. Must be something lawyers have to do to pass the Bar!!! I liked your “slice and glue” solution.....I was confused by the “glazing” you used to bring the color back consistently across the side panels. I’ll do some more research as two of my tiers are much lighter than the rest. Anyway, Bravo-Zulu on your restoration!
glazing is staining over a sealed or finished surface . in this case I used minwax 1/2 mahogany and 1/2 dark walnut and thinned about 1/2 with naptha . check out tom Johnson's channel he does a lot of glazing and toning .

in some of the videos I do that . in this case the bookcase could not be set up for pictures before since the base was all apart.
I've had a similar experience with an old desk. But I couldn't get a clamp on the bubbling. I did opt to syringe (amazon) glue into the cavities. You bleached. What strength was that? You opted for shellac then poly. What was the reason for that? Very super great video! And your narration was perfect. I gotta know what you're thinking when you do these.

How do the hinges connect to glass doors ? I have my fathers barrister bookcase it’s all disconnect to glass doors

I've done dozens of these. I always strip them down sand and then put several coats of danish oil finish sanding each coat in with wet dry paper. I've repaired delamanations on the back of the shelf seems these panels always give up with age. The repair on the top is also typical.

In 1904 Otto Wernicke went into partnership with the Globe Company of Cincinnatti to make Globe-Wernicke bookcases. Globe had been founded by Henry C. Yeister, who was the first tperson o come up with the idea of the modern filing cabinet where files are stored vertically, rather than stacked horizontally on a shelf. Globe-Wernicke went out of business in 1955.

I have almost the same bookcase, my top glass is leaded, one glass is missing but the veneer is damaged - chunks missing from top. What do you suggest on filling in where it goes over the rounded edge? You did an amazing job btw!!

Can you explain how you determined that the existing finish was lacquer? Is there some test to determine that? Would love to know what finish is on some of my upcoming projects.
take a small amount of alcohol and rub in an inconspicuous spot and if it turns white it is lacquer if it instantly gets soft and sticky it is shellac .
Why not just use dark blue or black craft paper for the label backer?
I was lucky. Like my side by side, my barrister's bookcase came to me in mint condition. I give them gentle cleaning and care.
Beautiful piece. I notice you used a combination of several finishes, as you do in most Videos, how do you decide which to use when?
I mostly use shellac . this bookcase was finished with lacquer on the outside and shellac on the interiors . shellac over lacquer does not work . so I used water based poly on the exterior which is not a problem going over the old lacquer finish .I use the water based poly as well when extra protection is needed , such as a table top.
How did you restore the glass doors?
Is there a video of you explaining how you got interested in this or how you got to be so detail oriented? I have no desire to watch any other wood furniture restorers. ❤
What is the side banding material at each segment and can it be painted or polished?

Any idea what type finish was originally used on the inside of the Globe Wernicke bookcases? Most seem to have a somewhat yellow appearance. I don't think it's from aging.

it is very slow setting and very low tack , also very easy to wipe up the excess .
