"like with everything on this tractor there's always 4 times more to take off than you originally thought." Hahahaha I'm glad someone shares my views of working on masseys!! (fellow 178 owner)
Looks like there is a hydraulic oil filter inside the transmission housing like other MF models is that right? Looking for answers to my three point linkage problem and thought the filter might be the first thing to check. As ever, there are far more complications when maintaining our gear.
Hi Jeff, yes there is a filter in the housing. If you take the cover plate off where the PTO engagement leaver is (on mine you have to take the foot plate and hydraulic hoses off first) you can reach your hand in and feel around for the filter. There is a wing nut on top to undo and the the filter and 2 shields come off with it. If you have a 178 there is also some adjustments under the cover behind the transmission dip stick. I hope this helps. Thanks from Geoffrey

Hi Hayden, yeah it’s a good tractor, but doing any maintenance takes longer than I think it will.
Thanks from Geoffrey
I love my ozito impact wrench for this.
Hi Hubcap, yeah I will get one eventually. They are very useful tools.
