The last sonic game and probably one of the last games made for the Game Gear in 1996.
Graphically it looks as near as you can get to its 16bit counterpart on an 8bit handheld. The levels are quite small however so not to hard to memorize the various routes. Still, some of the bonus rings are in tricky to reach places. On each boss stage there is a button to find that allows access to a ring room. I tried to show these but sometimes forgot. Again I spend to much time collecting rings, but this is just how I play ..... Grin -

Man can you imagine playing the underwater level in this game when the controls already felt like playing underwater?
It looks like it controls exactly the same at least. Although the whole game having the speed of an underwater level is upsetting my stomach
@@GregDaWizard lol I don't even remember writing that comment. None of the GG/SMS Sonics were ever as fast as we would have liked, though I still somewhat enjoyed them.
I'm pretty sure they could have made all these games run faster, or at least feel faster.
@@Keranu its a bit awkward. That’s definitely the case with this game although it seems that took a back seat to the graphics. I liked playing them too tho even tho they were a bit awkward. Shout out to Sonic 1 GG and Sonic Chaos

Fun fact: There is a official Master System version of Sonic Blast, it was made by Brazil's official Sega's distributor TecToy with aproval of Sega. Since the Game Gear wasn't much sucessful here near the SMS, TecToy made a version of this game for the system, which was (still is) a very sucessful and beloved console here in Brazil. Sonic Blast for SMS had larger screen, but even simplier graphics, because of the limited color pallet compared to the Game Gear, the Special Stage still ran in a tiny screen. It may not be the best way to play Sonic Blast, but its one of the rarest Master System cartridges, it was only released in Brazil, and i think its the largest Master System game.

In the USA (I live there mate) the only sonic games for the master system we got was sonic 1, and sonic spinball. The others were on the game gear

I love how this abomination got the greenlight for the master system, yet triple trouble, the direct sequel/continuation of sonic chaos and effectively the 8-bit adaptation of sonic 3 and knuckles, got tossed aside.
Time and again the world proves we live in the worst timeline.

On the small screen of the Game Gear, it looked pretty nice as a kid. The blur helped definitely.

When I was a kid I decided to play and complete every Sonic game. I played and beat this game. God knows what was wrong with me. Eventually I ran out of Sonic games and started playing weird ROM hacks instead. Anyway that's the story of why I'm now here, 15 years later, watching a longplay of Sonic Blast.
That is the situation I'm in right now. Still have like 4 or 5 Sonic games left to beat but other than that I'm pretty much finished with this franchise, and it makes me mad.

It was nice of Robotnik to install an arrow on his craft, so that Sonic knows where to hit.

@@Jhon-fe3qq Technically you're correct, there were only Genesis games in Sonic Mega Collection, however it was rereleased with extra Game Gear games as Sonic Mega Collection Plus
I don't want to say that they didn't try, because it's obvious they tried. They actually tried to make this a Sonic game. It has all the features and the feels. They even manage to capture the usual frustration of the second underwater level adequately. I think that's what makes the final product painful.
There are some parts that genuinely suprised me. The spike wall that you had to outrun, for example, and the logic behind the ring stages (not only did they get harder, but the first stage was to learn the pattern so you could earn the Emerald in the second stage).
FateJHedgehog ya they tried but I am a huge Sega fan anyway so I think it would of been fun but I am only 12 and me and my dad had a Sega Genesis and why always played sonic 2. I allso hate why everyone hates this game but I don't. and the bosses are interesting. Bye the way sice I am a sonic fan my UA-cam name was supposed to be Sweetsonicgamer226

I bought this game off the Virtual Console for my 2DS. I remember looking at the screenshots for this game and being really impressed by the pre-rendered visuals. For a late release Game Gear title, it's the closest the system can get to achieving a similar style as Donkey Kong Country or Vectorman. The soundtrack is amazing, as well. Probably my favorite out of all the Game Gear titles. But it simply isn't fun to play. Controls are so stiff and the graphics can make various actions like collecting rings a bit disorienting.
Ahh i remember playing this on a sega master collection or something like that. Good times. There was a game called the ooze that scared the frick out of me
I didn't really understand the purpose of Ooze. It was difficult to achieve a good play in it without manuals and stuff.
Cory Moses I only beat the first level of it. It was too hard. You could see the manual in the manual section if you wanted to.

Its so weird to see Sonic as this fake 3D sprite that doesn't fit with the overall 2D environment. It's like he's trapped in a world he really shouldn't be in.

I didn't even know this sonic game existed until recently. I gotta love for some scenes in the game the backgrounds move so fast but then sonic is just waddling along the levels while everything is fast around him lol.
They put Super Sonic on a signpost, but couldn't even manage to add him into the final stage. That hurts

It's clearly trying really hard for an 8 bit game which affects it's a bit. But it's not a bad game by any means.
Blue Marine Zone looks painful af control wise. And I also love how in this Zone, the day goes on from morning/early afternoon, to sunset, to nighttime. It's a Winter themed Zone on top of an Underwater Zone, so DST isn't active.😖😖😖😖😖

I remember downloading this on my 3DS. It was a fun little novelty, but nothing more than that
I also bought it from the 3DS Virtual Console. I was disappointed with the game, but the soundtrack was awesome. Especially Blue Marine Zone.
This was my first Sonic game ever. It's awful, but I still love it.
This feels like a game where the only real effort put into it was in the character models/digitized sprites. The level design is at best uninspired and cookie cutter and downright sloppy at worst (whose bright idea was it to put the only Power Sneakers monitor in one of the most cramped levels in the game?). The characters move slow as molasses and take up way too much of the screen compared to the enemies, and Knuckles is as useful as a mans nipple here, like the stages were designed only with Sonic in mind and they decided to throw in Knuckles for kicks afterward, and his gliding and climbing ability has been nerfed as badly as the spindash was in Knuckles Chaotix--maybe even worse! The Special Stages are a bore, and its rich that they (and the rest of the game in general aside from Blue Marine) are so easy that the dev team made it so that if you lose to even one of them, you have to play the entire game all over again to get the rest of the emeralds. The boss fights are alright, but the (real) final boss fight is just a super cheap and poorly designed mess. Even the soundtrack is basically nyquil for your ears.
The soundtrack is one of the very few things I'd give this game. Not all the music, but the boss theme, final boss, zones 1, maybe 2, 4 and 5. : p
I liked the double jump, the game was fun, except for that greek underwater stage, too confusing and difficult

I actually kind of like this game a bit, I can agree that this game is a bit slow at points but thankfully the speed isn't as tedious as Sonic Labyrinth's speed. Just my opinion though.

I remember this game from my cousins Game Gear collection that we inherit.
I can appreciate the ambition of this title and while it's very clunky, sluggish and overall doesn't play like a traditional Sonic game, I still think it's not too bad. There were worse Sonic games by then (Sonic Spinball for the Game Gear comes to mind), so I can't understand why this game gets so much hate.
I just got it and I honestly enjoyed it sure the controls feel like a bit like if I was controlling a truck but it's not that bad I actually enjoyed it

This game is nowhere near as awful as people say it is. It’s a decent game at best in my opinion. There’s far better Sonic games out there for sure, but this one’s fine.

When I first saw this game, I thought it was a port of sonic 3d blast, but then i wasn't, and instead it's a platformer ,except the character sprites are prerendered, the backrounds and stuff looks nice for an 8 bit game but it isn't the best, hell, I thing sonic labyrinth looks more like sonic 3d blast port

Fun Fact: If you wait 10 minutes in a level, this screen will pop up and it will say "HURRY UP!" and some intense music will play! Once the music ends, the "HURRY UP" word will scroll through the screen 3 times, and you will have 10 seconds left before you will lose a life! Try it!
