Wonderful find. I saw 1600 in previews. I wish there were footage of her Duet for One. I have audio but it was also the visual flipping the wig to change characters.
It amazes me that there are so few recordings of her stage performances for us to enjoy. She is an excellent and versatile actress, but also an amazing singer! Thank you for sharing.
She did star as "the piratical maid of all work" Ruth in the NYSF Central Park production of THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE with Kevin Kline, Linda Ronstadt, George Rose, et al. That production was recorded and commercially made available on DVD.
She was also wonderful in the Broadway musical Darling of the Day (music and lyrics by Jule Styne and E.Y. Harburg), which has an original cast album that's probably on UA-cam.
I'll never forget the Saturday matinee performance of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue that, at first, I thought was a huge risk. I happened to be passing the Mark Hellinger one afternoon and a friend of mine was going into the theatre. I said to him, "Good luck" and he surprised me by telling me it was the second time he was going to see the show. "I find i warm and witty," he said. What he didn't say was that it was fabulous. I put Patricia Routledge's performance in my top 10 female star performances I've ever seen (and I've seen most of the greats from Merman and Verdon to Channing and Murphy). We are so lucky to have this tiny bit of her performance. How I wish there were a visual record of her performance of DUET FOR ONE. Thank you for this wonderful clip.
"1600" was indeed a collector's item, with perhaps the greatest score to ever come from a resounding flop. Routledge's "Duet for One" was indeed monumental. This is the only "1600"-related visual I have, but I do wonder if footage was shot for TV reviews; after all, we do have that 12 minutes of Lansbury in "Gypsy," and that was two years earlier.
She was 'used' a great deal -- you just had to be alive at the right time. She was on the stage in the West End many many times in the 60s, 70s and 80s. Sometimes in musicals, often in comedies. She worked with Alistair Sim a number of times and the skill and timing of their work together was something to behold. Dandy Dick was one of the great successes they had together -- it almost took your breath away it was so funny. She also -- famously -- won a Tony award for a musical she did in New York (with Vincent Price!!!) in the late 60s. It closed after the first night, or at the end of that week. and used to be known as one of Broadway's famous flops, but the score (which is still available) is extremely good. It was called Darling of the Day.
Prepared, poised, versatile, fully committed… Very hard to believe this is the same person who pulled off all that comedy and stunts in the role of Hyacinth Bucket. I love her in everything she has done.
Poor Patricia she had the worst luck on Broadway. Darling of the Day was directed wrongly and she deserved the Tony Award. Love Match failed in Previews but Bio Musicals are typically unlucky. This musical suffered from being a dull history lesson that went through the White House but it's lack of a recording is a pain as the live recordings shows a good score. After this one she did Say Hello to Harvey which was doomed by the reason it took a loved play and ruined it. After that she gave up Broadway such a shame
Ollie Lane she really did. And she is at the top of her game in Darling. I do love Estelle Parsons, but it’s a shame Patricia didn’t transfer to Broadway in Pirates. From the recording of her at the Delacourt, where she is brilliant, I think she would have nabbed that best supporting Tony.
@@jghays I saw her Ruth in Pirates in Central Park, and even with a stage full of scene-stealers, she walked away with the show through her comic timing, superb singing and sheer stage savvy.
a wonderful great artist ❤

@@njatty YES! She's brilliant in it. I love Estelle Parsons, but I always want PR on the cast recording.

Loved her as The Old Woman in Candide for Scottish Opera, in the West End, many years ago. Comic genius & singing up a storm.
She is so talented. I wish she had been used more as an actress and singer.

Thank you.
