Robert Mitchum should have been nominated for an Academy Award as Best Actor for his performance in RYAN’S DAUGHTER.

It is a masterpiece of direction, casting, scripting and acting. A powerful, haunting and enigmatic film that stays with you.

CRITICS RUBBISHED THE FILM AND DAVID LEAN WAS SO UNHAPPY HE STOPPED FOR A LONG TIME MAKING FILMS AFTER THAT. THE SAME DIRECTOR WHO GAVE ACCADEMY AWARD FILMS LIKE "BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI" " LAWRENCE OF ARABIA" AND " DOCTOR ZHIVAGO " NOT MANY DIRECTORS CAN MATCH HIM

Robert Mitchum is one of the movie giants. I can't understand why the AFI didn't give him a Life Achievement Award. Rip

I didn't know Mitchum was so well spoken. Want to hear more interviews now

Mitchum was a prodigious wordsmith and wrote poetry acclaimed by many. He only acted dumb because while he respected acting, he had very little respect for actors.

Deborah Kerr said he was a man with many lights hidden under many bushels. In other words, he had talents he mostly kept to himself.

It's true: Ryan's Daughter is a demanding film, and its equivocal ending (which I find part of its greatness) leaves many unsatisfied. Because Robert Bolt could write freely, he wrote character as he wished, and left much of the deeper essences to the visuals, which resulted in what to this day remains one of the most beautiful films ever made. Like it or not, aesthetic success or failure, one simply cannot deny that this film is @#$#@#-ing GORGEOUS.

Hi, I spent 5 days on the Dingle Peninsula last month and I have to say that I couldn't believe how beautiful it was. The scenery was amazing and I saw many of the views of the film. I got the move from my local library and watched it one quite night and by the end I was in tears. It's a most beautiful part of Ireland and I was delighted to hear that it was Mr Mitchum's favourite movie. Best supporting actor should also have a gone to the scenery.

I agree. That scene between father and daughter at the end and the unanswered question of how the marriage can work out really gives depth, I think?!

It’s such an amazing film. Such empathetic male characters and a magnificent female lead. It’s Lean’s most humane and riveting movie.

And the way the film accepts the infidelity is fascinating for 1970? There's a great parable in it too, about the destructive nature of mob rule?

Not wishing to detract from Mitchum's high assessment of Lean - wasn't there another British man (in the role of director though famous for his acting) - one "Charles Laughton" - who secured a very powerful performance from Mitchum in "Night of the Hunter" - and "directorially" - gave us one of the finest movies (the said "Night of the Hunter") of the 1950s ???

I thought it interesting as well . What David did in Lawrence of Arabia was explained by Steven Spielberg .
He told a story through someone else's memory.

    1:40 Total accord...
I'm sorry but that's absolute nonsense.
It's been well documented from people who worked on the film that the opposite was true.

Robert Mitchums part was very low key, he had to understate his performance so it isn't noticed as much as Christopher Jones but it was a good team.
