Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I’m looking at a clean c161 with same hydrostatic transmission, a little skeptical because it’s old sunstrand. However I like the kohler 16 341 engine.wish it was an 8 speed, however I may purchase anyway. I have a 520h with a 20 hp onan, I want a 2nd tractor in case one breaks so I can mow lawn
Good info. I just bought one of these tractors and I have a leak at the lift handle itself when I operate it that I’m going to need to figure out. I know nothing about these tractors. Your info on the oil vs transmission fluid is good to know as well as the amount needed. Good job… thanks
Wow , the fact that this tractor has been subjected to running EXTREMELY low on trans fluid is a testament to the toughness of the Sunstrand hydro unit ...
Hi - Thank you. Good video and lesson learned from you! I assumed you meant that there are two types of fluid: the hydraulic fluid (the first cap you filled with fluid and spilled) and the transmission fluid. In your case, you were trying to add transmission fluid. What is the hydraulic fluid I should use, mind it has been leaking on a hose.
I think i have a similar transmission than you have and i have one question for you about this video. Where is the oil filling hole? I could only find a dipstick hole.
Obviously there was no preventive maintenance done on this tractor. I would be triple checking everything now knowing what you know. Even removing the deck and checking for the leak. Good luck

Yes, this tractor has been trucking right along since I did this fluid change / fill.

Fluid goes in where your dipstick is have you changed the oil and clean the filter screen.
These also have a filter on the right side of the tractor. Should be changed every few years.
Every hydrostatic lawn tractor I have had had failed. I prefer manual transmission myself.

The dipstick hole is the fill hole. Or at least you can use it as both. Just get your self a cheap 1 dollar funnel and boom you're done.
Low on fluid check cold
