It's sad that the big ones now still ain't as big as they used to be but it's a great thing that so many people can actively try to bag themselves a sturgeon I didn't even know you could fish for them anywhere In the states

I grew up on a bayou in Western Michigan and and we speared pike almost every day of the season. Once I let someone use my shanty and a giant sturgeon came into the hole and settled on the bottom. The guy didn't know what it was so he threw his spear. Thankfully he missed. When I got home from school I checked and there was trench in the mud about a foot wide as far out of the hole as I could see.

Sturgeon are not rare. The Winnebago system has the healthiest population of sturgeon in the world, also is the most regulated. The only way of taking a sturgeon is by spear during the spearing season. You are doing more harm by fighting that fish hook and line.

As much as the spearing just doesn't sit right with me the local wildlife dudes seem like they keep a pretty insane track on them.... I mean they get tagged and you gotta register them. So I can only hope the local wildlife authorities got an eye on them. I'm not gonna lie I do like uncut angling approach of like barely holding the fish outta the water. Still interesting to learn about different traditions from the people who came before us (I bet it was a indigenous people kind thing. The sturgeon back than were probably fucking huge)

I would say this is pretty messed up if they're just wasting the fish, but if they're doing it to keep the population at bay and let other species have a decent population then I guess I don't see any issues. It is Amazing how many People think this is some sort of Crime and is "A Disgusting Tradition". One, the whole Conservation thing and How where you Live its illegal. Yah maybe in your State but in Other states and Major Lakes it's different cause the Locals know the How to Conserve and what they need to do to Keep a Healthy Population. Two, Why do you think its so Wrong to Fish for these Amazing Fish. If it's Because of the Spearing part than I don't know what to tell yah but if there was a REAL Problem with the Population they wouldn't allow Spearing Plain and Simple. I don't Live in a Place that Spear Sturgeon but I work for a Sportsman's Assc. And Work with Conservationists all the Time and understand many Rules when it comes to Restricting Fish and Game(For my State and Area).

Wisconsin is really good with their conservation department. They have lots of researchers that do studies on how many to take to keep the populations at the right levels

Good vid but it is highly looked down upon to kill sturgeon they are near extinction the sturgeon are very endangered

There is always some know it all like you that thinks they know more than the Wisconsin Department of Wildlife. Do you really think they would allow this activity if the sturgeon were endangered? I hope you answer no, but I doubt you have enough character about you to admit you were wrong.

I'm not even from the US but from watching this and seeing how many people go out and do this on the opening day and seeing how prepared everyone gets I very much doubt the sturgeon are in danger of being over fished or this would not be allowed to happen, honestly from watching this just common sense would make you realise nothing is being done that would be harmful to sturgeon numbers.

Fish at 16:45 while may have been a legal fish, it should have been passed on. Simply too young and little imo. Yeah a fish is a fish, but conservation should be part of a fishermans equation. Even part of the fishermans creed. It goes with the clich'e of: Just because you can, should you really!
