- From Jakarta I headed to Bandung by rail.
Intercity travel in the massive Java island is made easy with the excellent rail network. The trains are modern but the prices are so much lower than the UK.
The 3 hour journey in Executive Class was just 135,000 rupiah ($8.84 USD). For that, you get nice cushioned leather seats that recline. There's plenty of leg space so even if you fully recline your seat you're not inconveniencing the person behind you.
Bandung is the capital city of the West Java province and the fourth largest city in Indonesia. My first impression of the city was that it was less chaotic than Jakarta. It was also apparent that the air was cooler and fresher.
My hotel, Hilton Bandung, was located near the train station. I specifically booked this hotel because if its location. It would be so easy to take the train to Bandung and just walk to the hotel. It wasn't as easy as I imagined though. As the pavement is all messed up, dragging a suitcase was a real pain.
When checking in to the Hilton I was told that I'd been upgraded. That never really means anything, because a lot of the time the upgrade is just the same room that you booked, but on a higher floor. Here, it meant that I got a corner room, which is actually pretty decent because you get a view from two sides, and only share a wall with one other room. The potential to be disturbed by loud neighbours is halved.
The room was very spacious and well furnished, with a proper working desk and chair. That's what I like about staying in a big chain hotel like a Hilton or Marriott, you rarely get a bad desk setup. A lot of the independent hotels, while they can be more unique and interesting than the brand name hotels, they somehow get the desk situation all wrong, with uncomfortable wooden chairs and desks that you can't fit your legs under.
I was settling in to my room when I found a surprise that the hotel staff had left for me. A full afternoon tea set, with sandwiches and cakes. Superb! A nice little treat to whet the appetite before going on an evening street food hunt, which you will see in the next vlog.

I envy how good and high tech Indonesian train station compared to station in Malaysia. More convenient, a lot of electric port charging and more informative than here. I always struggle to find port charging and find my way in Malaysia Train station even international airport 😭

Dale, for further occasion, I suggest you to always carry your bags and stuff near you, especially in train station and when you are on the locomotives. There are so many cases in Indonesia that people lost their luggage/bags etc in train station.

Ada bro yang lebih diatas kelas eksekutif di Indonesia nama keretanya "KERETA WISATA" itu sekali perjalanan harus membayar minimal 10 juta - 20 jutaan tergantung jarak dan fasilitasnya. Tiket dibeli dengan cara dipesan langsung ke KAI, nah nanti itu dapet fasilitasnya udah bukan kek kereta tapi seperti ruangan tamu pribadi. Kalo mau lihat seperti apa fasilitasnya bisa cari dengan mengetik "KERETA WISATA" itu kereta paling mahal dan paling mewah di Indonesia sejak dulu tapi banyak orang yang belum tau.

Hello Dale! Welcome to Bandung! For your information, the 2nd item you ate from the hotel platter is called perkedel. It's made from mashed potato, and we fried it. There are times where minced meat or vegetable is found inside, but sometimes it's just served plain. You can find those everywhere!

If u wanna travel to Indonesia, u can bring $350-$500 and u can get 'everything' here. Avarage standar hotel in Indonesia start from $20 per night and luxury hotel start from $133/night. How about the foods? Dont worry, Indonesian food is the cheapest one. U can bring many foods from street food only with $10. Go here, u can see many good view!

Hey Dale, if you're still (or coming back) in Indonesia, I recommend you to get a train with live cooking service, since usually they got the "best" and fresh train food. Also you don't need to blur their television, it's just full of KAI (Indonesian Train Company) ads. XD
Dale Thank you for sharing. I have taken business class on a regular train and taken the executive train like you took. I learned to always take the executive train going anywhere in Java. Also Indomart rules for getting good cheap snacks.

32:46 it called perkedel kentang or smashed potato fritter. You can eat it as snack or with rice. There is other delicious fritter made up from corn called perkedel jagung (corn fritter). You should try that too. It's delicious 😋
